What book covers the early history of the club best? I don't want one just with shiny photos.... what do you recommend?

Bristol Rovers Football Club: The definitive History 1883-2003 by Stephen Byrne & Mike Jay. Tempus Publishing. Think there might be a revised version with the last 10 years in but TBH I wouldn't want to read about 2014!! Good detailed read, might find it useful.
ps yes there is a revised edition same title but published in 2014 (that'll be a great read!!) with the later years. by Amberley Publishing.

if still available, Pirates in Profile, also by Mike Jay and Stephen Byrne.
It covers 1920 - 1994 (or my copy does) and is well illustrated.

There's a big chunk of the first few chapters you can read here to see if it's what you want. The Definitive History sample

I hate the way some Amazon sellers do that. £0.03 for the book and £2.80 postage, just so they are sorted top using lowest price first. I don't buy from them on principle.

Unless it fits as a large letter envelope £2.80 is less than a small parcel 2nd class standard. £2.83 for a book delivered and that's not good enough?

The only way sellers make a profit on postage is for small paperbacks.
