I've been fortunate enough to visit Normandy a few times including the beaches and many of the sights made famous by The Longest Day, driving along the coast from St Mare Eglise to Pegasus Bridge. My wife still thinks it's funny that the first place liberated was a cafe!
My mother in law had the pleasure in meeting Major Howard, an amazing man, totally understated. When you visualise where the gliders landed around the canal then it just emphasises what a piece of flying it truly was.
