Not sure why some people think our strikers are going to be banging in the goals this season. With the exception of Taylor why would you think any of our strikers are capable of 10+ goals in L1 when they couldn't manage that total in L2? How many did Ellis score when you take away the penalties? I'm guessing 3. Gaffney had a hot spell on loan but only ended up with 3 in his last 17 once he'd signed. What did Easter get? I'm guessing 7 or 8. And James has only scored 2 in his last 69 games! I agree with GasheadGaz above. If Taylor gets injured or has a barren spell I think we'll struggle for goals. There is nothing to suggest any of our other strikers will get 10+ goals. Why take away the penalties from Harrison's total? A goal is a goal regardless if it is a penalty!
I think the strikers will get around 40-50 goals between them with the midfield and defender chipping in with around 15-20 which would be a good team total.
Basically anybody can put the ball in the net from the spot, Browner takes a good pen but you wouldn't expect him to score 10+ goals if he played upfront. Harrold's 18 goals haul for us when 69?) came from the spot proves why you should ignore pens, as he's never got into double figures since in his career!!

Penalties are sometimes harder than chances in open play and to discount them as goals is unfair.

The point about penalties isn't whether they count or not, the players have to be in a position to be awarded them in the first place. Part of the reason I felt Elliott Richards was underrated was for some of the same reasons given here about Ellis. EH will make runs into the box which draws centre backs into chopping him down. Regardless of whether it's easy or hard to score a pen is neither here nor there, the ref has to point to the spot first and EH's style of play increases the chance of that happening.

If MT gets 20 / 25 goals in 46 full games, that only leaves 46 full games for the other 4 forwards to feature in. They will do well to get 20 between them. Think about it peeps, we can only have 2 on the pitch at once. 10 goals each pfffft. What if MT doesn't start every game? What about people coming off the bench, do they never score? Players don't have to start a match to score in it, so I would say there are a lot more than just a simple 46 games for the rest of the strikers to spread between them, sometimes when chasing a game we quite often end up with 3 strikers on the pitch together.

Are we back to the old penalties don't count discussion? a goal is a goal surely, however it's scored, so why would you take away pens? Maybe I was being a bit over optimistic with Ellis getting 10+ but I honestly think he'll get that or very near, but Gaffers will imo without a doubt, he may have only scored 3 in his last 17 but over the 24 games in total he scored 8, I always thought that a goal return for a season was exactly that, for a season, not just someones last however many games to suit whatever point you're trying to make, and he has said himself that until he came to us he wasn't fit and was out injured and didn't get a full pre-season in, so coming into the season fully fit and with a better understanding of how we play can only increase his ability to score goals no? As for James, he may have only scored 2 in his last 69 but that wasn't playing for us and under DC who is known for getting the best out of players, also how many of those games did you see? was he playing as a striker every one of those games? He scored a good goal in the friendly against Swansea which is hopefully indicative of what's to come from him if DC can get him playing to his potential. Personally I don't count pens but that's just me. I think it falsely inflates a players goal total. If Taylor had taken the pens and Harrison had finished the season with 3 goals I'm sure everyone would be saying that was a pretty poor return. At the end of the day any player should score 9 times out of 10 from the penalty spot whether it's McChrystal or Messi. Don't get me wrong, I hope you're right. Ellis and Rory do have the potential to get 10+ I'd I'd be delighted if they do. So a penalty under massive pressure doesn't count yet a tap in from two yards with the keeper stranded counts?

Obviously it counts as a goal and every goal is vital. However, good positioning and / or movement would probably lead to a striker tapping in from 2 yards, where as you are chosen to have a free shot from 12 yards with a penalty. I know some goals from open play are also fortunate but that should level out over the course of a season. If you're the penalty taker you might get 10 chances to increase your tally that the other players don't have. Just the way I look at it.

Right that's it I'm starting a new thread: "Do the penalty takers even care about the fans"?

Does the Chairman care who takes the penalties? We should be told.

Who is going to tell Manse his penalty didn't count Do pens in a shoot out count towards a players goal total?. They never used to. Gary Lineker lost out on the England record because his penalty shootout goal against Germany didn't.

Gray you have plenty of valid points there. I agree it's not quite as simple as I had stated above. I get a real boner from stats etc , and like to use historical data to quantify and project outcomes. Last season looking at one position 90 mins X 46 league games. MT last season played 3349 of a possible 4140 minutes (81%) scored 27 goals, one goal every 124 mins. That only left 791 mins (9%) he wasn't playing. MT 27 goals in 3349 mins, one goal every 124 minutes. Projected goals =33 BB 13 goals in 2848 mins , one goal every 219 minutes. Projected goals =19 JE 7 goals in 1881 mins, one goal every 269 minutes. projected goals =15 RG 8 goals in 1876 mins, one goal every 235 mins. Projected goals =18 EH 7 goals in 1209 mins, one goal every 173 mins. Projected goals =24 Ergo if we play 5 upfront we'll be in the Champions league this time next year. I'll get me cloak.

How about the person who replaced Taylor in games he was substituted or didn't play ? How many goals were scored in those 791 minutes by his replacement and therefore the goals per minute.
