No I'm not trying to guess if there will be a signing today or worst still even hazard a guess at who; if anybody ; it might be. I am going to try to guess how the team will line up for the big day tomorrow!
Firstly I will hazard a guess at 4-4-2 which as a starter is just a punt because in the friendlies there seems to have been a push towards wing backs but that may be just due to the lack of wingers. Obviously my chances of getting the team right is pretty nigh impossible as I don't know the injury situation but here goes.
Goalkeeper well I would stick with Mildenhall as IMO he has more presence than Puddy. Its a position where I would like to see a signing to push Mildy - a big guy in the Chapman mould of last season, someone who dominates in the air BUT I don't see this as an urgent signing as it is probably the least of our problems as I am sure Mildy can perform admirably at this level. Saying that don't be at all surprised to either see Puddy between the sticks or even a new signing today.
Defence - For me and I am pretty sure if all these players had played a bigger part in pre season this would be DC's choice
Leadbitter Lockyer Hartley (Captain) Brown
If Leadbitter is unfit I would go for James Clarke rather than take a big chance by changing formation and going for Broom- IMO same as Orient was not the place for Lyttle last season so Scunthorpe is not the place for Broom however if DC does go for 3-5-2 then James Clarke Lockyer and Hartley.
Midfield This is the area where we have so many players but IMO lack the quality big time for a new stronger League. With all fit I think DC would have gone for
Bodin Lawrence Mansell Moore (My own choice without injuries would be Bodin Lines New Signing or Mansell Montano with Moore coming on second half)
I honestly feel that both central players will miss the big day and that Lines will partner probably Ollie Clarke but how I would love to see a new signing in there today. The question marks over the fitness of Byron Moore and Christian Montano and Lawrence is where I have that feeling it might be 3-5-2 in which case I would hazard a guess at
Bodin Lines Easter O Clarke Brown
Personally I wouldn't start Ollie Clarke, Gosling, or Broom as neither of the former IMO excelled at League 2 level and I don't see either excelling at a higher level and the latter I just don't think he has the experience to be starting such an important fixture. Personally if we have to play 3-5-2 I would replace Ollie Clarke with Sinclair.
Up top I think DC will; stick with Matty taylor and Gaffney and so would I. This is another area where I would like to see a new signing in the form of a physical strong striker to push Gaffney and Harrison. I still have my doubts over whether Harrison will cut it at this level based on his failure to really nail down a place at League 2 level.
Finally the bench and this is an area where I feel we will again excel with choices Easter, McCrystal, Gosling, Sinclair, James plus others who may not be injured and of course Puddy or a new signing..
I have no doubt that all the players retained from last season can give us a really strong bench and are capable of coming on at any time but would really like to see four new signings being GK,Central midfield, Full Back and strong striker.
So I await with interest the team that starts tomorrow and here's hoping for a positive result and IMO against a strong Scunthorpe team that would be a point. UTG
