I like Goodnight Irene but we do overuse it, especially at the big games.
Also why is it we only sing the chorus? We used to sing the whole lot and just singing the same few lines makes it repetitive.

I was at the far end of West middle. Very loud for most of the match. we may have been quite close. I was Upper tier of West Stand, far end (mistakenly thought my tickets would at the other end of that stand nearer Gas). I thought it sounded great and I was probably about as far away as you could be in the stadium. Very jealous of people who got tkts for away end, and doubly annoyed that it wasn't even a sell out, and certainly didn't look to me like 39,000+, with small gaps everywhere.. Oh well, at least I can stay I saw it. Quite a lot of spare seats near me and not at all 'intimidating'. A lot of casuals and football tourists in my area I think.

When did we ever sing the whole lot? We often used to sing more than just the chorus. Even during our Mem days. "Last Saturday night we got married my and the wife settled down... in bed!" Have you never heard that?

I thought our crowd was great and made the atmosphere by spurring the Chelsea fans into life.

Question is...was the OP actually there? Because we've pretty much covered the ground with various people who all said it was loud!
I was at the bottom, left of the goal, and it was deafening! Like google pimple deafening! So I can only assume, you were either so blind (and deaf) drunk, or you weren't actually at Stamford Bridge!

OP is a shot away here. Atmopshere was amazing. I was in the shed end lower just to the left of the goal. I got a bit carried away tbh compared to usual!

The atmosphere made by Gasheads all day was class, best build up to a game I've experienced. Marching towards Stamford Bridge with a couple thousand Gasheads from Earls Court was incredible.
Inside the ground was weird, lots of noise from us and not a lot from Chelsea. Most of their 'fans' seemed to be starstruck and were too busy taking photos to really contribute to the atmosphere. Imagine the scences if we'd snatched a late equaliser!

Imagine the scences if we'd snatched a late equaliser! Quite a few of the home support would indeed be starstruck because as I explained on another topic, this match offered an opportunity to those who cannot get tickets for the PL matches. And allied to it being in the school holiday's there were a lot of family groups present with no doubt many kids attending their first game. I thought when you consider that this was an early round of a competition that many PL fans supposedly deride, that both sets of supporters made it a big game atmosphere. That great away support did indeed set the tone. The noise from the home end was sporadic but loud when they sorted themselves out and sung the same song together. The atmosphere could and would have been even better had Rovers taken the lead and swept away any home fan complacency. To put it in perspective, compare that attendance with the miserable crowd that showed up at Loftus Road that same evening. There were actually more travelling Gas at Stamford Bridge than QPR could be bothered to show at home for their own cup tie. It was by far the biggest crowd in this round of the League Cup.

in his post match notes on the chelsea website conte said "he now knew about english cup ties, the atmosphere and how hard it was for everyone" the atmosphere was electric and both sets of players clearly were aware of the away end noise. chelsea fans actually responded to our fans eventually and made quite a din. its important to me that we sing "irene" as its unique to us,its about identity to me. finally a message to the op were you at the match?

Thought the volume was good; although, once we get above around 600 supporters in a group, we really struggle to keep GI together, the timing is **** and we end up with a number of disjointed versions running at the same time ? and "when the Gas the go marching" ends up like charge of the light-brigade. I don't understand why we cant keep it together, tottenham get around 35k at home and stay in sinc through out, **** knows why we seem to struggle.

I agree with that, first premier league ground for me and as G79 said about a wall of noise from the opposite end it felt like that to me at the other end when Chelsea piped up.I was far left upper tier(as you look at it)and could clearly hear the disjointed and sometimes different songs at the same time from us.

I overheard two fans on the way to the ground: Who are we playing tonight? I don't know.

Sound takes about 1/3 second to travel from one end of the ground to the other. It's physically impossible to keep it together.

I thought it would be fairly well established amongst our fanbase by now that we sing it through once slowly, and then it speeds up during the second time before it reaches the crescendo. At home games and when we take smaller away followings it works fine and I think sounds brilliant, but when we take a larger away following (like to Chelsea) people seem to just speed through it and the whole thing goes to sh1t before it even reaches the end. The whole point of singing a song like that through slowly once is that when we do take 4,000 to Chelsea and it's hard to keep the singing in time, it's a chant that's done slowly enough the first time round to allow people to join in... Frustrates me every time.
