Just had this month's Bishopston Landfill through the letterbox. In it we are invited to join the Friends of the Memorial Ground, for the low cost membership fee of £5 per annum. They've also updated their website to bring us news of their Constitutional Meeting. memorialgroundbristol.wordpress.com/2016/08/The aims of Friends of the Memorial Ground (FOMG) are: To inform the wider public about the founding purpose of the Memorial Ground as a place of remembrance for the more than three hundred Bristol rugby players killed in the 1914-1918 war. To ensure a future for the Mem in keeping with the founding intentions: i.e. that the land be “used for football or other athletic sport or recreation.” To work with other local, and national, organisations to preserve and develop the Memorial Ground as a place for remembrance, and as a place for sport and recreation. To promote the value which the Memorial Ground holds for the Bristol community, its culture, heritage, economy, and well-being. They've applied for the whole Mem site to be added to the local list. (From BCC site)"We have made a list of buildings, structures and sites that don't already have listed status but which are valued and are considered worthy of preservation. This may be by virtue of their quality, style or historical importance." Not sure whether we need to be concerned about this. No minutes, or report on the numbers present at their AGM. I suspect fewer than 3.

You know they are in a minority when they post everything anonymously. £5? good luck with that.

I thought they'd already applied for listed status and got told to do one? Plus didn't the attempt to get the stadium listed as an Asset of Community Value get them nowhere.
It'll be interesting to see what Wael's plans are eventually for the Mem as if it's residential development, with small retails units surely that a better option for residents than an abandoned sports stadium?

I notice they don't mention Rugby, is this so they don't upset the good friend of the group Mr Pantsdown ? After he removed the rugby from the site.

Hope your right The Mem has been made an Asset of Community Value, but all that means is if we sell it, the local community get the chance to buy it for the full whack, instead. They're gonna need a few more £5 membership fees for that.

I'm sure from time to time the occasional Green Party member must stroll past the Mem and look at the crumbling concrete, cracked tarmac and peeling paint and think "Have I backed the right horse here?"

I presumed that had been successful. Hope your right The Memorial Gates are listed, but the previous attempt to get the rest of the Mem listed failed. I'll find a link to the decision, but it was generally along the lines of "collection of relatively recent structures of limited architectural value". The Mem is, however, an Asset of Community Value and there are processes that were documented at the time of BCC granting this status. Essentially, it boils down to the right of a local community bidder to have a bid considered in the event that the ACV is offered for sale. There are obligations on the owner to advise when there is an intention to sell, but no obligation to accept a bid. ACV status doesn't present any lasting hurdle to redevelopment, including demolishing of the complete structure if so desired.(Whereas the listed status of the gates does). The other relevant point is the timing. The previous board announced an intention to sell, and no bid was received from the community within the prescribed time. Any subsequent sale would have to go through the same process.

No need to worry, I reckon we will still be at The Mem by the end of this decade.

No need to worry, I reckon we will still be at The Mem by the end of this decade. P'raps we will. Just like Man City have got an U21 stadium at the Ethiad campus,we'll keep the Mem for reserve and youth games. Meanwhile, the first team will be playing at the newly expanded 56,000 capacity AJIB UWE Stadium, whilst the compulsory purchase on Ashton Gate will have gone through (condemned as part of BCC vermin control measures). City reverting to playing as their original Bedminster FC on Greville Smyth Park.

I expect Daniella has got herself involved. No doubt she's got plenty of time to interfere now she no longer holds high office. Unless, of course, all her previous shenanigans were merely a cynical attempt to highten public awareness. - Surely not. There was another woman who was heavily into TRASH; I can't remember her name. She acted as spokeswoman and I remember she was dreadful at being interviewed. Clearly a rank amateur and seemed flustered and on the defensive. The people of Bishopston should count themselves lucky they have such civic stalwarts to protect their environment. Instead of a nice shiny new supermarket, with plentiful free parking they still have a shabby, ramshackle stadium, and get flooded with football supporter car parking and have to suffer considerable inconvenience very other Saturday for 9 months of the year.
