1973 Whilst I agree the principle of "with a youth team backing up" this is only worthwhile if you are a Premiership club because at present the system is that if you happen to run the Academy system well then anybody who is any good will be gone to a top club before they even see the First Team and you are left with your Kilgours,Greenslades, Lyttles and Malpass. I say this with all respect to these players and maybe some of them will make it but everything at present is geared to the Premiership. We may as well follow the policy of "loaning Chelsea kids".

How do you know what 'sustainable' means from the BoDs perspective? Unless you know our financial breakdown and growth targets, guessing about squad size is completely pointless. DC isn't just running around with a pen and signing on forms, he is directed by the BoD. But you'd hope DC had some say in the size of the sqaud plus didn't Wael or SH suggest he had full control over who he signed? Seriously? DC will have meetings with the BoD to reveal his strategy. The BoD will direct him in terms of cost. DC will identify players he would like but these will be scrutinized and sanctioned by the BoD.

some interesting views from people on here but bearing in mind wael wants a sustainable football club then i believe that can only be achieved with a youth system backing up a 21 approx senior pro squad and of course a new or redeveloped stadium. "sustainable" to me at least means breaking even financially in the medium term without being propped up with big loans from the owner. ie different to what city have been under lansdown, i agree that part of it is nothing to do with dc

Sooner have a squad on the large side than a squad which is too small. Whils't it looks possibly on the big side at present wait till the injuries & suspensions kick in and i'm sure you will agree with what the club has done. I think as Rovers supporters we are extremely lucky our new owners have had the foresight to deal with any impending problems that may/could arise down the line. A lot of third div supporters of other clubs will not be so lucky.

They always have been really. The only side I can think of that dropped down but maintained its strong academy was Southampton. Crewe are famous for producing players who make it to 1st year pro then get nabbed. Teams like us lose them prior to pro status.
