One of the many things that frustrated me about the way we were set up yesterday was the positions of Boateng and Lines.
When we signed Boateng I assumed he was going to be our defensive midfielder and would sit in front of the back four and let the likes of Lines and Colkett join the attack.
But it seemed to me yesterday that Lines was often our deepest midfielder... I'm assuming this was due to instruction from DC, but I don't get the logic behind it.
Lines has never and will never be a player to shield a defence effectively, and if he's there to dictate the game with his range of passing from deep then I'd scrap that idea because Boateng played some excellent raking passes out to the wings and looked extremely calm in possession.
DC dropped Lines for a period last season for dropping too deep and not influencing games high enough up the pitch, and if he continues to take up the 'quarterback' role I'd drop him again and get Colkett into the side (who I thought looked excellent).
But perhaps DC had told Lines to do that?

But perhaps DC had told Lines to do that? Even our Webmaster had Boateng down to start in the DM role. I thought it was a very strange decision, considering the attributes of both players that you mention. Colkett looked absolutely class and could be a very useful weapon in opening up defences this season.

Boateng doesn't look a DM to me, I guess that's why Sincs had to cover so much of the midfield doing the dirty work yesterday. We still desperately need Mansell back, then it's either Boateng or Lines for the other CM role for me.

Yeah Mansell shod defo keep Boetang the Palace midfielder out of the side. If not, maybe he should keep Lines out, who is genuine tier 2 material. Failing that we could use the 3 of them and leave the Chelsea wonderkid as 4th choice CM.

I think DC has built this squad with 3-5-2 in mind and I'm genuinely worried. If he plays 3-5-2 and we beat Wallsall on Tuesday I'll hold my hands up and admit I'm wrong and I'll be delighted we've got 3 pts though.

Id love nothing more than to see DC have success with any formation I'm sure we both would but the fact that he's tried it early on in the last two seasons and scrapped it because it hasn't worked suggests that it's probably not going to work again. It's clearly his favourite formation but when he's had the majority of his success with us playing 4-4-2 I can't see why. I do trust him he's been brilliant for us but I've been pulling my hair out watching us this season if I'm honest. The problem is if the new winger I've forgotten his name montano and Bodin are either not up to it or in form or injured then it doesn't really give us any opinion but to play a wing back formation. I feel sorry for Lee Brown to be honest I reckoned he really thought he could make the step up in league 1 in his LB role but he's currently being asked to play in a position that doesn't suit him with no one in front of him in a division higher than he's ever played in before. Playing Browner at LWB reminds me of us flogging Harrold as a target man or persistently playing Andy Williams when the youngsters confidence was clearly shot. It just seems wrong but like we've said I'd love nothing more than to be proven wrong if this is the way forward.

The biggest problem with Lines at the moment (certainly in the last few home games I've seen) is that whenever he gets the ball he's always facing the wrong way (towards our goal or sideways) or the ball is played behind him meaning he has no forward momentum. It's possible to fix this by switching around the midfield positions, or just by coaching better to ensure he's facing forward and looking up when the ball arrives at his feet....

I think lines plays his best football when there are wide players to hit passes to. His two best attributes are his surging runs through midfield and his ability to see a wide man in space and switch the play. When we're so deep it dangerous to make a surging run and when we've got no wide attacking players there's no one to play that pass too. He's suffering in the 3-5-2 I think they all are bar Sinclair.
