I know there are a lot of Somerset supporting Gas fans, including me, a minority of us but a sizeable one. So come on Somerset, let's get that elusive first championship over the next four days.

Well, people who I thought were reasonable posters are in fact a load of ********. Why on earth would you want counties like Middlesex or Yorkshire who are all about the establishment and authority to beat Somerset? As a Somerset CCC member since the 60s I am disappointed that we didn't win it (and btw would have loved Gloucs to have won 20/20 and do well generally). Yes we have our rivalry when we meet each other but Somerset and Gloucs must stick together against the bigger, establishment counties or one day we will find cricket is all about those counties who have test grounds.

Well said. Unfortunately it was never going to happen, Middx and Yorks set it up between them that it would be one of them and not Somerset.

Agree wholeheartedly warehamgas. It's already started with the proposals for city based T20 teams next season. On the result yesterday - Congratulations Middlesex, deserved over the whole season despite the shenanigans of yesterday afternoon. Many of us Somerset supporters felt the target was too easy and so clearly got that wrong, but the inference I've seen on cricket forums that Yorkshire were not allowed to defend when the cause became hopeless leaves a bad taste. I can't accept the 5 Live Sports Extra commentator yesterday at the time of the joke bowling (don't know his name) going on about how it was the turning wickets prepared at Taunton that was to blame for what was going on at Lords! It seems to me that the ECB wants players to be able to bat and bowl in varying and difficult (not dangerous) conditions. Somerset are developing great spin bowlers, other counties have good spin bowlers too, and batsmen that can play spin. Yet when Taunton prepares such pitches, which are the same for both teams playing those games, we are criticised and they would rather see flat tracks and contrived results - and then wonder why when players are elevated to test level, they can't cope with turning or other types of track around the world! Anyway back to football today, and something we can all agree on - Come on Gas!

I'm a Glos fan but I said well done to Middlesex because of the way they did it.. You mean by spending a lot of time on the declaration negotiation and setting a relatively easy declaration with the proviso that Yorkshire have to go for it even if they are in trouble which Andrew Gale has admitted happened. That way it was either Middx or Yorks who would win it. The hat trick I agree and over the course of the season Middx were deserving winners but the means on Friday last two hours stank and undermined the integrity of the whole competition. I can just imagine if similar shenanigans went on to make sure Rovers didn't go up if two of our rivals negotiated a result to cost us. Anyway all over, well done to Middx overall deserved winners and well done to Somerset and Yorkshire for making it a memorable season esp September.

Btw if you want good cricket banter and conversation there are a lot of knowledgable posters on the BR independent forum who know their cricket.

Thanks for those, I'm surprised that cricket is on the consciousness of Americans but it was good article and perhaps because of the distance gave a good perspective on the day.

I always followed Bristol Rugby.......but now they are Bristol Sport (Mens Rugby Section), they play in red, and they play at the sh1t pit..........I just can't do it anymore.

Are you sure you're not a fan of those south of the river? Only you're sounding like it. Quite sure. Rovers, Glos and Bristol, me. Loathe City, Somerset and Bath. Surely loathe when it comes to Somerset and Bath Rugby (loathe definition - feel intense dislike or disgust for) is a bit strong.
One of the great pleasures of a top level cricket or Rugby match is the way the opposition fans mix and there is no trouble, and yes as Somerset are my Cricket team, Bath are my Rugby team. I do not loathe Gloucestershire Cricket, Bristol or Gloucester Rugby and normally want the West Country sides to do well. Clearly Bristol Rugby now being part of the Dark Lord's Empire makes that one hard.
