A lot of good sense on this thread. The table doesn't lie. But when you look where we've come from & the players we've done it with, it's incredible. A pause in our upward progress to draw breath, take stock, adjust, recruit new players, will not come amiss. Were we to go up, that might be the real disaster.

I know im stating the obvious but matty would HAVE to be replaced by a proven lg1 goalscorer if we are to avoid a bottom third battle. Anyone who thinks our current strikers could step up to fill the void are crazy!

A few weeks ago Uwe Rosler was shouted down by DC for stating that we had done well, before questioning if we could sustain it. It was clearly an attempt at putting pressure on our boys before the game, but it turns out he had a point - we couldn't sustain it. Many people on here have stated that they feel there is nothing to fear from this league. Since the Bolton game I have felt the opposite. In that game, and almost every one since, we have had pace to be scared of. Players are much faster in this league, both with their feet, and with their speed of thought - and our defence is struggling to cope. That is why there is only one or two teams that have conceded more goals than us! I think we've ridden our luck up until now, with late goals and gutsy fightbacks. All very commendable, but now it seems our luck is out.
The truth is we haven't rolled anyone over, winning only one game by more than a single goal. Oldham aside, we've not controlled any game such that we look like we'll definitely win. Each game has been a rollercoaster where we look frail at the back and that it could go either way. I think inside DC knows he hasn't got the personel for top 6. In recent interviews he has referenced last season's "massive over-achievement" and how this squad has only cost him 50K (presumably what we paid for Gaffney). I think we're good enough to stay up, but anything more must be seen as a bonus. I'd love to be wrong but we're neither strong enough at the back, nor ruthless enough in front of goal to be top 6 this time around. This isn't a knee-jerk reaction to last nights pityful display. Like I said, I've felt like this since the Bolton game. Agree and disagree with this. I'm not a rose-tinter at all but at Southend the penalty against us was a joke, P'boro did a smash and grab raid (they deserved nowt from the game) and at Sheff utd there was (didn't go) a clear penalty for hands at the end not given to us. I make that 6 points lost as a result. The wins we have picked up at home have all been deserved. What I do agree with you about is our defence and to some extent our attack- we are conceding too many even when we are the better team in the game - teams, even, Charlton on Tuesday, need fewer crosses/shots to get their goals than we do - think Walsall, P'boro and Bolton where we had a lot of territory and pounded their goals with crosses and corners and got very little in return. At the moment we are relying on Taylor to be on form pretty much every game ( sadly he missed a couple of great chances on Tuesday).

Truth is whilst we may have passion we don't have a lot of quality. In truth we have a lot of players that wont play for us again, and they need to move on. Then we have others who make up the squad but aren't Div 1 quality. I would say at the moment, loans aside, we have just 3 players that could hack it in the league above, Lines, Easter, and Lockyear. Not wishing to single any one player out but using Sinclair as an example he plays with passion, commitment, and does his best every game, but compared to any of the Charlton midfield he was not on the same pitch. Lets face it to get out of this league we need to be able to play like that, and Bolton, and Bradford and Scunthorpe. We need that calibre of player. I am sure we will do it, but not for a few years.

Charlton's midfield was average - they often by-passed the midfield - look at the goal highlights. Cookman was their only midfielder who played well.

I was obviously seeing things then when the majority of the balls won in the middle of the park were by Charlton defenders and strikers. So if that's the case Cookman was by far and away the best midfielder on show as NONE of are midfield appeared to be on the pitch.
