Donald Trump has appointed James "Mad Dog" Mattis as his defence secretary. Read up about him; he makes General Patton look like St Francis of Assisi. I`m off to Aldi, to stock up on tinned goods.

There will still be some more to come yet about Mattis. Apparently to run The Pentagon you have to be 7 years out of uniform, Mattis only hung his uniform up 4 years ago. So to get the job, Congress will have to pass new legislation, something they have only done once before.

The UK have a career politician as the Defence Minister. I think the position should always be filled by someone who has served. At least they'll have some idea as to what they are talking about !

Nobody knows what the hell they're talking about. They're all a bunch of back stabbing lying cheating pile of shat. They've ruined everything. UK is f8cked, US is doomed, Germany is collapsing, I'm off to find a nice little island in the sun with a bar on the beach.

If they did then I'd suggest someone who understood the air, land and sea environments, such as a Royal Marine. It involves international travel and as much of our interests are Middle East based, perhaps an understanding of local customs, for example, how to wear a fez correctly. Would you like it? More seriously, I'd agree in principle although some of our most far sighted ministers had little or no background (Haldane and Cardwell) whilst the hardest cuts have have come from former servicemen (Sandys, Nott and King). As there are fewer MPs with a military background maybe an intensive course would be required for all new MPs. Understanding that not all ships are 'battleships' and not all tracked vehicles are 'tanks' would be a start.

If you`ve got time to read a 400 page book, check out "The Mandibles" by Lionel Schriver. It`s set in the US in the years between 2027 and 2043, and it presents a pretty horrifying account of what life could be like in a country, which ( having borrowed and borrowed and borrowed for decades ) cannot afford to pay it`s bills. I tell you straight, it puts our 5-1 home defeat to Charlton into perspective.

I have read and heard a lot of this financial ruin literature and while I acknowledge our debt is abnormally high, it's not as bad as all that. We can always default for a start. The penalty for default is.....credit rating downgrade. Your country does not get "foreclosed". Russia defaulted in 98. If the US defaults, most of the world defaults. Hence it would affect the US tail riding EMs more so than the US in the long run. The US crucially has the worlds strongest military. Who's going to invade to sieze assets? Power is more important than debt.
