Just need a little vent on this:
I live in an area within the CPZ in Bristol. Now, seeing as the CPZ protects residents on these zones, I feel as qualified as anyone to comment.
The whole idea of CPZ is so people living in these zones have a space waiting for them when they get back. Prior, people from outside the area would use these spots for driving to work.
Trying to park anywhere in these zones is a nightmare - sometimes I need a prescription or a doctors appointment but I have to walk 40 mins to get there as parking is impossible.
To me, it's so representative of how this country is changing - the well to do folks ruling everything in their favour. Now, part of the reason this is encouraged is the council want the car to be used less and bike and busses to be used more. Funny how the people who now have to take the bus and bike are those people coming in from the subburbs, you know, poorer folks. They are the ones who should use the bike, whereas Clifton, Cottham, Southville et al, they all get allocated parking.
It used to annoy me, having to drive about a bit to get a space, but I thought, well, if I can afford to live here, close to town, that's the trade-off. No, no no! People really want their cake and eating it too.
There is an entitled attitude very strong in some parts of this city and the CPZ is a great example of this. Creating their own parking spaces, what next? Permits to visit well off neighbourhoods? Gated communities?
Here's an idea which will solve the traffic issues. Take all the money spent on building cycle lanes, parking zones, parking fines etc and subsidise major routes for bus travel. It was always cheaper for me, when I lived in whitchurch, to drive than pay the £6 return every day. However, council types love the bike...and millions are spend on cycle lanes few use, as most people are not 25 and fit enough to cycle up wells road or gloucester road twice a day....
