I wouldnt mind us getting Joe Lumsden in for a trial. He may be 26-years-old, but he has the quality and transferable attributes to play at a much higher level. Strong, decent pace, holds the ball up well, prolific goal scoring record. Years ago there was a player called Tony Book playing for Frome Town and Bath City. He was 30 when he signed for Plymouth Argyle and later joined Man City playing 244 games for them. Hayles joined us at 25 and Vardy made his Football League debut five months short of his 26th birthday. Late developers are out there. Lumsden scored 68 goals in 82 appearances for Stocksbridge Park Steels and has 12 goals in 14 games for Tadcaster Albion so far this season. He scored a decent goal in July 2017 against a good Sheffield Wednesday U23 side and a trial is surely a no lose situation.

Brad Lynch eventually joined Colne in the Northern Premier League Division One West and has scored 6 goals from 14 league and cup appearances from a wide role so far this season. 2 good goals in the cup (2:45mins and 3:16mins) Goal in pre season vs Fleetwood Scored his 9th goal last week. Has a goal involvement every 110 minutes with 15 goals and 12 assists so far, including this assist last weekend (see below). Previously on the books of Everton and Blackburn, only 18-years-old and looks to have a bright future. If he isn't in the running for the Evo-stik Young Player of the Year award I will be very surprised.

I'm looking forward to watching Dean Rule, Owen Windsor and Isaac Sinclair tonight if selected for the England Schools side. Three players I reckon are worth a trial and a closer look in training. A decent game tonight with Wales sadly winning it 1-0, but Dean Rule the pick of the England players for me. Good technique and touch, links play well and was a threat all game. With full time training and professional coaching he could be an asset at a higher level. As for Wales, they had a lad called Jack Wilson who was their star man on the night. A big, powerful, 17-year-old, with good pace, acceleration and engine. He plays for Haverfordwest County AFC in the Welsh League Division One and has scored 5 or 6 goals this season. He started for the Wales Schoolboys on the right, but looks like he could play in central midfield or up front. He has also played for the Wales Colleges side. Worth the club monitoring him. Run that led to the winning goal Run that helped his side move up the pitch and won them a throw near the corner Wilson goal against the England Independent Schools side recently: Talking of Welsh league players, a 21-year-old versatile left footed winger/forward, Tom Walters, at Goytre United in the Welsh League Division One is meant to be decent (see goals below) and trialled with Cardiff City last season after top scoring for Goytre United and winning Players Player and Managers' Player of the Year at the club. Another young winger at that level, Lamin Conteh at STM Sports AFC, also trialled with Cardiff City recently and is meant to be promising.

Another good finish yesterday. Can score off his right or left. Well worth a trial in the summer if possible.

With this said, always baffles me that we don't seem to exhaust the options in non-league. Or if we do, it's on the likes of Mensah. So many good players flying under the radar that clubs like Posh seem to hoover up, I'd certainly like to see us actively exploring this market more, especially given we're clearly on a budget. Posh hoover up because they pay hundreds of thousands even for Level 5 players !!

Agree with what’s been said about signing non league talent. I’ve always thought we should be I only hope that our experience with Mensah doesn’t put us off. But I wonder if the fact we didn’t do it enough with DC, who had a non league background, will have an effect. GC has a league background and might not want to go that way. I guess time will tell us. TW does have non league experience so I hope he will be aware of those that pirate and others are mentioning. UTG!

Miller was a free transfer. In fairness to Posh, they have made a massive financial profit from selling some of the non-league gems, and that isn't including lower football league signings like Dwight Gayle (bought for £470,000, sold for £7.5m), Ryan Bennett (bought for £500,000, sold for £3m) and Jack Marriott (bought for £450k, sold for £4m). We used to do similar with non-league players like Hayles (bought for £200k, sold for £2mil) and Ellington (bought for £150k, sold for £1.2m).

Mensah a disaster, Partington has done well. Matthews looks too lightweight for me but I hope he's given another season to prove himself.

I only meant Mensah because we were in League 1 when we signed him (and Joe P and Sam M). Joe P made a good transition and is ok, Sam M finding it harder but then it’s not been the best season for anyone to find their feet tbh. Taylor stayed in the same league when we signed him so I guess not too great a transition needed. Players from the National who come to us are moving up two levels, those from National N and S moving up three levels etc....etc. It’s quite a transition but I hope we could aim to sign the very best. And as you’ve said there are gems out there. UTG!

They sold him to Port Vale for a sizeable, six-figure sum though.

Another player that would be worth a trial for the development squad is 17-year-old Sonny Carey at Wroxham in the Thurlow Nunn League. He can play as an attacking midfielder, number 10, in a wider role or as a central striker and has scored 14 goals from 25 starts (4 sub appearances) this season for Wroxham. He has also recently represented the England Colleges side in the 2019 Roma Caput Mundi tournament where he scored against Malta. Last season he played for Norwich United in the Thurlow Nunn League and helped them win the Norfolk Senior Cup where he scored 2 goals in the Final. Came through the Norwich City youth system. I actually prefer their 19-year-old striker Davide Rodari (edit: see goals below). He was at Inter Milan as a youngster and last season top scored for the Hastings Utd U19, U23 and 1st team. He was offered trials at a couple of League One clubs before he suffered an ACL injury which has kept him out for the whole of this season so far, but should be back in the next week or two. He was told 1 year out for his ACL recovery, but worked hard and came on as a sub on Saturday after 7 months out...and scored a goal! A good prospect and if he gets back to the level he was at before his injury he should attract the scouts again. Goal from Saturday drive.google.com/file/d/1Aszsq0qeO8f2BBbveapeN9t6fwF-an2g/view

A good young player that has caught my eye this season who might be worth a look for our development squad. Zak Goodson, 18-years-old, 5ft 11in, Striker, Basford United. During the 17/18 season he picked up the Award for Top Goalscorer at the AGM for the National League U19 Alliance. Left footed Goodson finished not only the top goalscorer for the Long Eaton United Academy, but also took the same award for the Long Eaton United first team. He scored 23 goals from 39 games in total for Long Eaton United as a 16/17-year-old in the Midland Football League, before signing for Basford United at the end of October 2018. Since joining Northern Premier League Premier Division side Basford United he has scored 11 goals and got 5 assists from 11 starts (plus 8 sub apps), including a good goal against Chesterfield in the FA Trophy. In the past he scored 2 goals for Derby County U16s against Valencia in October 2015.

Basford United. I’ve seen the name and they’re in Northern Premier League. Fairly new to this level? Don’t know much about them. Are they a club on the rise because 259 travelling fans seem a very good turn out at that level? UTG!

Are they a club on the rise because 259 travelling fans seem a very good turn out at that level? UTG! In seven years they've had five promotions, going from the Notts Senior League to where they are now. The owners are ambitious and are investing in ground improvements and hope to eventually reach the Football League. They have other decent players at the club too, like Matt Thornhill (played for Nottingham Forest in the Championship), James Reid (Played for Forest in the Championship and represented England at youth level) and the highly-rated youngster Kole Lambert moved to Norwich City in January. www.nottinghampost.com/sport/football/playing-front-15-fans-dreaming-1389111www.nottinghampost.com/news/nottingham-news/basford-united-plan-500000-new-1934486

Thanks for that pirate. Interesting though the idea of Nottingham having a third league team I’m not so sure. 👍 UTG!

Has anyone seen anything of Brandon Goodship? I don't know why he struggled to score for Yeovil, but since he has dropped down to Weymouth the 23-year-old 6ft 3in striker has been in sensational form, scoring 38 league goals last season and getting 7 goals in 4 games so far this season. Some of his goals wouldn't look out of place at a higher level and I know he is being watched by National League and Football League clubs. Hopefully we are keeping an eye on his progress too. Only player from Step 3 of the non-league pyramid to receive an England C call-up today following his 30 goals in all competitions this season. nonleague.today/news/details.php?news_id=4598Other players mentioned in this thread or on the forum that have been selected include Ryan Huddart (Boreham Wood), Marvin Ekpiteta (Leyton Orient), Ed Williams (Kidderminster Harriers) and Josh Koroma (Leyton Orient). Luke James is also included. England C is a conveyor belt of talent: www.thenonleaguefootballpaper.com/features/25885/matt-badcock-column-england-c-is-a-conveyor-belt-of-talent/For anyone interested, the England C game against Wales C is being screened live tonight on Sgorio's Facebook page and YouTube channel. Kick off at 7.45pm. m.facebook.com/sgorio/
