Except they could have had a stadium on the cheap, but they rejected the deal. And they've spent more on squad development in the past 18 months than the previous regime ever did. Antonio, don't let the squad development distract from the stadium build. We have only signed 2 players spending a bit of cash and brought in host of U23s from lower league clubs for nothing I don't think the money is there. UWE are saying they dont know why we pulled out, so wasnt done formally face to face. The situation is embarrassing. Well, you can take that view. We've obviously been trying to hammer out a deal with UWE over the past year, and so they must have a very good idea of why we've pulled out. So, they're clearly being a bit literal/evasive/rhetorical when they say they have absolutely no idea. I don't understand why fans of the club are so skeptical of club statements (yes, I know we have had some crappy statements, but not from this regime), but then lap up clearly self-serving statements by UWE. Do you really think UWE care more about the club than Wael? Yes, we didn't get all the players we wanted, but we forked out for some, more than we usually would, and so I agree that the squad development should not distract us from the UWE build. And vice versa.

Believe me, you haven't heard the end of UWE, Rovers just standing firm with not getting a bad deal for the club. UWE will know what rovers want and the ball if now firmly in their court if they want things to progress.

We've put out of a deal because it wasn't right for the club. What would have been embarrassing would be to plough on regardless and then end up like Coventry. The club is hardly going to come out and say why negotiations broke down as that may weaken their hand in the future.

The statement from UWE included :
"" A spokeswoman for UWE said the university "remained committed to delivering a new stadium".
"We still believe it [the new stadium] would bring great benefits to the university, local community and the regional economy," she said. ""
Two things :
1) It's always easy for the party that responds 2nd to take the moral high ground. They were always playing hard ball and it fell nicely into their hands that Dwayne Sports called it off cos it gave them an easy "it was their decision to pull out, not ours" option. I wonder if Wael & co were not communicating anything as they wanted UWE to call it off, but their hand was forced due to the FaceBook post. I just hope that the timing of that post hasn't forced Wael to do something he didn't want to do at this time which may ultimate harm relations between him and the fans.
2) All the positives quoted by the UWE spokeswoman are for them. There is nothing suggesting it would be good for BRFC as well. It feels like this has been the case all the way along and is probably the reason Wael finally said "no thanks".

"Vice Chancellor at the university, Professor Steve West, claims he was only told talks had collapsed on Monday"
"surprised to receive an email from Dwane Sports’ agent on Monday stating the deal had collapsed."
So he was informed prior to it becoming public and the announcement being made, he may not have been informed of exactly why, but suspect he has a good idea of what Rovers were not happy with.
Ask yourself where the leaks came from if UWE was informed on Monday .....
Think the idea that Rovers never told them is simply rubbish.

I get the impression that the UWE are now panicking. The income from this project formed an important part of the UWE's future finances - “For us the stadium was a really big part of the university’s future plans, not just for students, but for the local community through our outreach programmes and the wider South West economy."
All along, the UWE were keen to retain the freehold to the land, either by leasing to Rovers or via their fallback option - a leasehold housing development. Now that Rovers have pulled out, the UWE have realised that leasehold housing is no longer an option (on the 25th July, only a week ago, the Government announced that it will ban leashold housing developments).
So the UWE are now faced with selling the freehold to Rovers or selling the freehold for housing. The Rover's deal would mean an almost immediate cash return. Money from housing would be a long way in the future due to negotiations, planning, inquiries etc. It's really a choice of XXXX now or XXXX in 5-7 years time. Either way, they lose the freehold.
