I see that Huddersfield are shutting down their Academy. They reckon it's not worth the money, especially with the bigger clubs hoovering up all the young talent, and then loaning them out.
This is also my view; until something is done to stop bigger clubs swooping in and taking lower clubs most promising players for pittance, it probably isn't worth it for the few successes you may get.
I would like to see a cap on the number of players a club can have in a squad to start with.

It probably isn't worth the money for a club like Huddersfield. They've got at least 7 far bigger clubs within a 50 mile or so radius, Leeds, Both Sheffield Clubs, Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool and Everton all competing for the best local youngsters to snap up. The only youngster to make the step up to Huddersfields first team in the last few years, was Phillip Binning who they brought from Denmark. Saying that, Barnsley have produced a couple of players from their academy like John Stones and Mason Holgate.

Given how easy it seems to have been for Chris Hargreaves to put together a Development Squad this summer then you do have to wonder why club's bother with an Academy? Why not just have a U23 development squad picking up all the Premiership and Championship Academy rejects at 18+?

I think this means they will only have players who are seventeen or over. It stops the bigger clubs poaching the kids when they reach sixteen.

Unless you're in the top 4 or 5 clubs then it's very rare for the smaller clubs to make any money on youngsters because they are snapped up by the top 4 or 5 clubs for peanuts before they're 16

Are we all saying it's time to scrap the academy and just build the UWE at the colony instead 1. We cannot build a stadium at the Colony. 2. We appear to be spending a lot of money in pursuit of a Cat 2 Academy, but some clubs are scrapping it as it doesn't pay. Just saying......

Perfect timing for Wael to announce building The Colony is no longer feasible and they want the training ground to be more local, so they are now looking to build an housing estate instead at Almondsbury!

When you look at the number of people employed at the Academy www.bristolrovers.co.uk/teams/staff-profiles/you have to wonder if it is cost effective. Personally I don't think it is. I understand that it is seen as 'a good thing' to have an Academy, and there's a bit of kudos attached to having one; but on balance it all seems to be a waste of money!

The whole structure needs an overview. If smaller clubs are to build & run accadamies then rules on the poaching of talent, by the big clubs need to be in favour of the smaller clubs. There needs to be squad limits & also needs to be a limit on how many players can be loaned out at any one time. How many of the 38 Chelsea loaned out at one point last season, will actually make the first team squad?

I get the impression that the whole future of the club rests on what DC can manage to magic out of the team.
Push for and achieve a Championship place, the funds will come flying in. Miss out and settle in a low place in L1, then it's a new tent and a pasty hut.
If DC leaves, where will be we be then?
I'm probably wrong, but I just see the owners waiting to see where DC can take us before they decide how much to invest.
Which is topsy turvy thinking.

I think anyone who thinks only DC could possibly take us forward is a bit naive. It gets to a point where you have to put more money in than the rest to do well. I think league 1 is where it begins, championships is one of the top most watched leagues in the world and a huge amounts of money flowing through it. to get there amd stay there unless your very lucky you have to spemd aome money. I think the expectation on DC to perform miracles is a bit much. the man has dome very well in the budget handed to him, until he is given considerably better budget I don't see us being any better than top 10.

Just saying Back in 2012 they spent £15million on refurbishing their academy and it cost them £2.3mil a year at that time to run it, but it was recently called "the most profitable academy in the world." Hard, if not impossible, to compete with clubs like that. It isn't just Southampton doing it, even Cardiff City have set up an Advanced Development Centre at the Yate International Academy. The sh** spend vast sums on their academy a year.

The idea of bringing your own players through is always appealing if it provides your basic squad and a few Gems to sell on. The whole big clubs nabbing small clubs players will always happen Rovers recently nabbed a youngster from Newport for a few quid. Maybe Huddersfield think they are better just mopping up the players that don't make it at other clubs academies.
It doesn't really matter what category the academy is if the kids don't have the talent or application or right attitude in the first place. As far as regions are concerned (ie soton having a place in Bath) Rovers had a south wales nursery for years so its nothing new. I might like to control the numbers allowed at each club if I were at the FA.

I got hammered on here once for starting a thread questioning if academies are worthwhile? citing that brentford had scrapped their academy and were concentrating on a development squad rather than a youth/academy set up. Maybe were already going down that route but without any official announcement?

The colony is not purely an academy. It's a centre for Bristol rovers. Very important to get it built.
Academies are not tasked to make profit. They want to make great footballers... That will play for Bristol rovers.
