Game No 16
Opponents Northampton Away Won 6-0
Team Performance Mark out of 10
Slocombe Did npthing wrong. A consistent keeper who looks confident in his ability and looks a safe pair of hands. Not a lot to do but did everything well 7
Partington Was employed to keep the defending tight early on and did the job well looking a very classy player in everything he did and as the game went on he was so tight
and on top of his player that he also gave us the width to attack. 8
Menayese Just couldn't believe that last season he was playing for Weston and it was a brave decision by DC to play him alongside the inexperienced Broadbent but DC's confidence
in his squad paid off again. Menayese got his huge frame in the way of everything that Northampton threw in early on and throughout he kept an experienced centre forward in his pocket 8.5
Broadbent Another who stuck to his task well despite a couple of distribution errors in the first half that could have given a goal away at a vital time. He grew in confidence the longer
the game went on and helped restrict Northampton to very few chances and more than held his own against Revell who has caused problems to us in the past. 8
Bola What a performance and how I wish he belonged to us. Looks far superior to Clarke-Salter (last season) and the left back position is his natural position which is a shame for Browner
who will struggle to match the skill, quality and ability of the loanee.
Had his winger in his pocket and proceeded to run the entire left side and set up the goal for Telford. I have no doubt that
he will be well managed by DC and not allowed to get over confident and there will be times; like last week; when DC will use Lee Brown. 9.5 MOM
Lines The dominant figure from the off ,rarely gave the ball away and twisted and turned to change the direction of play. he was always available to receive the ball and really looked a
class act and was unlucky not to score himself when he hit the post and Gaffney hammered home the rebound. 9
O. Clarke That was more like it Ollie- played the thankless role and kept things tight and ticking overand winning the tackles. Good to see him regaining form but now for some more like that 7.5
Sercombe Stunning strike of a volley for a very well deserved goal and two assists in a great performance full of battling, running and quality that saw him and Lines dictate proceedings 9
Bodin 7.5 Started the rout off with a great strike of the ball for the first goal but unfortunately injuring his hamstring in the process-really hope for him that this is not a long lay off but it well
could be which really shows up how our season has gone injury wise so far.
Gaffney Another goal which I believe makes him the top goalscorer in the division for time on the field. He reacted the quickest to Lines scuffed shot that hit the post and gleefully rammed it
home. Battled throughout for every ball, running the channels well and putting in some dangerous crosses but should have scored in the first half as well. Only criticism would be that he must
watch the offside as was caught too many times. Have we at last found a striking partnership? The signs are there that we might have with him and Harrison providing a powerful partnership. 8.5
Harrison Another sparkling performance from Ellis and two goals with a powerful header and a great run and shot low into the far corner we may at last have found almost by accident a
partnership.Only time will tell but Ellis is at last showing his talent on a regular basis. 9
Subs:
Nichols Struggling to get his first goal and even a penalty couldn't bring that but again played very well and surely the goals will come soon but myself I would now give Telford the
first chance ahead of Nicholls but not so sure that DC will do that and he will probably be proved right in the end. 6.5
Sinclair It was good to see him back in the squad and he was infectious from the minute he got on. Of course Northampton were down to ten by then and he is certainly not the type of player
that they would want to see come on then and stretch then even more. involved in two goals setting up Sercombe and Lines (for the shot that Gaffney hammered in) in a good cameo. 7
Telford On a short time but during that time he managed to get into two great goalscoring positions and scored one in Cureton foxy style and brought a good save from the keeper although
he probably should have scored. Not really on long enough to mark but IMO it was a short 7 performance which should edge him in front of Nicholls. 7
Crowd Great atmosphere with just over a 1000 gasheads finually getting a performance they deserved and I must say it is the first time that I could ever say that 10 nil would not have flattered us! 8
Ref Without giving us many decisions he did an adequate job but how on earth did he only get two minutes injury time? I am sure he felt sorry for Northampton!! When are the FA going to
change the offside rule back to the linesmen flagging it straight away to avoid the situation where players and fans think they have beaten the trap. 6
Northampton Can we play them every week? What used to be a horrible place to come is fast becoming a happy hunting ground and 14 goals in the last three games against them (two at Sixfields)
is testimony to the change around in fortunes. 4
Team performance summed up What a performance...unbelievable. Could have been five by halt time in a first half that saw us totally outclass the hosts and in truth was a replication of
the performance in the first half at Pompey but this time we went in one up instead of one down and then bettered the performance in the second half.
Defence summed up Apart from a glaring mistake by Broadbent in the first half that could have presented Northampton with a goal it was pretty well a faultless performance by a makeshift defence which for me really showed what a great Manager DC is to make those changes and have confidence in his youngest and most inexperienced players.
Midfield summed up As a unit this was the best performance from the midfield this season with Ollie Clarke patrolling and tackling and Lines and Sercombe providing the creativity ,Sinclair being fit again to provide a bit of competition hopefully we can step up a bit in the next 11 fixtures.
Attack summed up Six goals scored and could have been ten with the strikers scoring five of them between them Ellis,Gaffney, Bodin and Telford.
Man of Match In truth the entire team were all Men of the Match with the Manager as well. There are not many games where you can say that ten goals wouldn't have flattered us but this was definitely one of those
that those present will not forget.
Final Comment I can only congratulate DC for both his Team Selection and use of substitutes and he has now created a nice problem for himself for next week. I think there is a strong case for keeping the same team next week although I will be very surprised if Bodin is fit which is a great loss and ; in truth ; I will be very surprised if DC resists making changes and bringing back both Lockyer and Sweeney is a good bet. I could not argue if he does because Oxford will be a very different proposition but if you don't try keeping an unchanged team we will not know but DC is on to a no win situation unless we beat Oxford after such a scintillating performance. I still feel that however well we do (if that is the case) up until January it is still vital that DC finds the three or four experienced players that can push on in the second half of the season. Two wingers ,another midfielder and possibly another striker must not be forgotten if our fortunes change and the right acquisitions would, IMO give us a great chance of progressing as a club. What a difference two games make in football and I am sure the same will be said after the next two really testing games. UTG
