Barnet look doomed too. Missed a pen at 1-0 and ended up losing 1-3. Nothing to do with us now, but wasn't that long ago that we were looking out for their results every week in the hope they'd slip up. We really have come a long way since then!

Yes you are right and I feel the same about Grimsby as well - maybe when people want to moan about our lack of progress they look at these clubs and get a reality check

I don't understand how Paul Hurst only managed to take Grimsbry up through the play-offs after several attempts, and once in League 2 they only really held their own.
He joins a struggling Shrewsbury mid season, manages to keep them up then the next season they are at the top of the table and looking like auto promotion contenders.
"It's a funny old game Saint"
"Aye, it is that, Greavesie"

He joins a struggling Shrewsbury mid season, manages to keep them up then the next season they are at the top of the table and looking like auto promotion contenders. "It's a funny old game Saint" "Aye, it is that, Greavesie" I think some clubs are just set up for failure, in a way that you can't really appreciate from the outside. No evidence of that, really, but just a feeling about how stuff seems to go there. Hurst must have worked his bollocks off for five years to get Grimsby where he got them, wading through all the baggage at that place, all the while getting abuse from the supporters. He goes somewhere that's set up (presumably) to actually help the team and has an immediate impact. I think probably that was the state of things at Rovers for a number of years and any success was despite the set-up. DC manages to work past that, and I think you have to trust that he and the board are trying to get things set up to actually help, going forward. It's not just about the stadium and the training pitch, but about every little thing at the club.

Spent 5 years in the Second tier during the nineties even playing in a higher division than Manchester City at one point. I hope they make it back up to a professional level in the future.

Every time I see the conference north table and see Stockport there in 10th makes me think how lucky we were. In the conference, after our not so good start things could have turned out so differently. Remember when us and Stockport had our falling out? They accused us of deliberately getting our game postponed so we could prepare for the City game.

I very much doubt we'd be where we are now.

I was at Stockport in the 90s watching us lose, Andy Gurney getting sent off and looking at their new stand going up thinking "If only..." I now look at them thinking "If only...."

Progress is measured in either short, medium or long term objectives. Over 125 years (long term) we have done naff all of any note.
The new AFC Wimbledon / Wigan and numerous other clubs have achieved more in a far shorter time scale. Short term we are progressing. The medium and long term? God only knows, lets hope he's still here in the medium term.
For the grace of DC we could have been the next York / Darlington / Stockport / Chester.
I reckon Crewe will be the next established old traditional club in chaos.
