team manager-darrell clarke keeper jim eadie back 4 trevor jacobs, tom lockyer, peter aitken, lindsay parsons. midfield kenny stephens, liam sercombe, stuart sinclair, colin dobson. strikers bruce bannister, alan warboys
subs sam slocombe,frankie prince,kyle bennett,ellis harrison,chris lines,stuart taylor,tom nichols.
Ive put tom nichols in based on the great season hes going to have next year and although i included kyle bennett i decided that tony craig hasnt qualified yet as hes not been here long enough.
just a bit of fun. The 1973-74 team were unbeaten for something like 29 games and yet somehow failed to win the division. It was my last year of watching regularly with my dad as i started playing after and only really watched again from 2000 onwards. The 73-74 team was the best rovers team i ever saw though chronic lack of investment made the 5 years in div 2 [championship] hard work.

Sorry, I very much try not to attack the poster but, you're "off your rocker"!

Mike Green, centre half and captain. He was a really good captain but i never liked him much as a player. He lost his place towards the end of that season to peter aitken and left at the end of the season.

Remember a stunning goal he scored v Wrexham I believe from what seemed like just inside their half towards the Tote End - sure it was 30+ yards!

I have got a book about that season and i must admit i never realised how late in the season green lost his place to aitken. Green made 44 appearances and aitken took his place and just played in the last 2 matches. 4 ever presents from that season were eadie, jacobs, taylor and stanton . Warboys made 32 appearances before pulling his hamstring and top scored with 22 goals.

Regrettably none of the 73-74 team would be fit enough and would struggle in today's football.
You only have to look at old clips to see how slow and laboured the football was.
Never mind I really enjoyed it at the time and the 8-2 win at Brighton that I witnessed when living a few miles along the coast was out of this world. Never to be forgotten.

Never mind I really enjoyed it at the time and the 8-2 win at Brighton that I witnessed when living a few miles along the coast was out of this world. Never to be forgotten. They would struggle on the pace of the game ,they would struggle with the childs football that they currently play with ,they would struggle with the fitness perhaps ,they would so very much struggle in the fact they could not tackle as they used to. They would also look confused as they saw players flying to the ground all over the place with no contact of consequence. Frankie Prince would be asking the manager "why cant I kick him ? " .They would be pleased with how good the mem pitch is at this time of year compared to the muddy often snow covered pitchs of the past.
Really the question should be expanded.
What 73-74 players would (given modern fitness training) be able to perform in todays team. and What players from todays team would be able to play back in the 73-74 teams day.
I think only lee Brown , Stuart Sinclair and tom Broadbent would have a chance of the 73-74 starting 11.

Well you would have to allow that team to be using todays training regimes although my own opinion is the difference is not as great as some say it is. Watch any footage of rocky marciano boxing, you wont see any heavyweight boxing today as fit as him.

Good thread but even more difficult to compare the two than the Lockyer and Steve Elliot thread.

A bit of fun I agree but no Stuart T or Frankie P are you serious? All about opinions I know but comparing the two teams I think only Liam S from today would get a sniff at a place in a joint team. No Tom Stanton bluebutterfly? Like other posters he is always underestimated, Tom S rarely got MOM but he put in a 7/10 shift every match and was an important part of that team. I agree that Darrell would probably be the manager but again Don M was a very good manager who did wonderful things on a rubbish budget which never got better even after going up. Don M was amuch more defensive manager who would settle for 0-0 rather than chase a win. He always started by making us hard to beat whereas DC was much more attacking. But it’s a good thread which in the end will depend on your age as to which players would be chosen. I saw plenty of the 73/74 team and still think they are the best Rovers “team” I’ve seen and better than the 89/90 team although I didn’t see as much of them so others might disagree. Pretty sure that the current team aren’t as good purely because they haven’t achieved as well at this level as the other two teams. They have time to prove me wrong!! UTG!

Never mind I really enjoyed it at the time and the 8-2 win at Brighton that I witnessed when living a few miles along the coast was out of this world. Never to be forgotten. Interesting. I thought that team was fit and clips are exactly that, clips, part of the play, not the whole play. Again the football that season wasn’t laboured, it might not have been the gung-ho approach of Bill Dodgin but a team where every player knew what he had to do and usually did it. A very good team who controlled games pretty well. It's always difficult to compare different eras and fitness is usually used as a reason why today is better than yesterday. I guess we’ll never know but that season our defence was very, very good and had, without checking, one of the best defensive records. Our midfield pair of Prince and Stanton we’re fit and were rarely outplayed. Dobson and Kenny Stephens our wide men were able to control play because they were so good. Bannister and Warboys were very good at manoeuvring and being physically stronger than their opponents respectively. But you are probably right about Jim Eadie not being the fittest!! Still a very good keeper who did what he had to do. UTG!
