What is that based on though? That he has the same last surname as a previous striker of ours? I have seen him myself and didn't rate him and know players that have played alongside him and didn't wait him. It is just sour grapes from his dad. He may go on to surprise but I highly doubt it. Not based on his surname at all? He was one of our more highly rated youngsters and had been a regular scorer for our youth sides. So you’ve seen him for 90 minutes and obviously that gives you an expert opinion on him? If you had seen someone like Taylor or Roberts when they were at the start of their careers at Rovers you could have dismissed them as being not so good but we obviously know that not to be the case. I understand the bit about sour grapes and of course as a parent he is going to be upset about his son getting released and he shouldn’t really name other players to prove his point it’s a bit distasteful but to be fair to him he does list some clear and legitimate reasons as to why he feels aggrieved by the decision. I’m backing him to surprise us and best of luck to the lad, it seem like he has the right attitude which is a start. Physically and Ability is way off being good enough.

Pros: Passionate and believes in his son.
Cons: Putting down others
I say good luck to Lewis. Go prove that CH was wrong. Daddy- you’re not helping your sons case.

Lee Brown was released by QPR at 20 years of age with no club to go to, tomorrow he’s going to get by emotional farewell from fans who regard him as a Rovers legend. I can understand the lad & his father being upset but as the saying goes when one door shuts another one opens.

Imagine the posts on here if we'd released LH and he'd then signed for the 82er's! Not really sure why GGMI started this thread then backs the club's decision to release Ellington.

Not the first and definately not the last time a young lad has been told he is no longer required by a football club. And not the first parent who is very unhappy. Over to you Lewis to prove the club was wrong and your dad right. As regards calling other players out, that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and takes away any sympathy I may have had. "As regards calling other players out, that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and takes away any sympathy I may have had." This!!!

Sounds very very bitter.
Although saying that, good luck to the young lad, hope he still makes it as a pro.

I reckon he will be latest player to be overlooked and do well elsewhere, Zamora, Mings and Doidge spring to mind as players that have succeeded after being overlooked by us. I’m not too keen on Ghassan Abu Hassan either as it just feels like a bit of a pr stunt to please those back home in Jordan. I do feel sorry for Lewis if he is being released to keep on the Jordanian. Sounds to me a bit nepotistic that we are playing Hargreaves son at the expense of others but I don’t begrudge it if the lad has the talent. What is that based on though? That he has the same last surname as a previous striker of ours? I have seen him myself and didn't rate him and know players that have played alongside him and didn't rate him. It is just sour grapes from his dad. He may go on to surprise but I highly doubt it. I played against and know many players who played with bobby Reid and he wasn’t the best in his year and a lot of people felt better players got released but look how he’s doing now professional coaches see potential and different things to others

What an embarassing post. Daddy needs to keep schtum.
Parents who think they are band managers or football coaches are just cringe.
And if you're trying to talk up your own kid talk him up, don't keep talking down other people.

I get the disappointment but sometimes it's just not meant to be. Good luck to the young lad but for the parent to take to social media and slate other players by name is bang out of order.

Posted by Lewis's dad.. Gav Ellington is feeling disappointed. 1 hr · Bristol Farewell to Bristol Rovers! After my son's very dignified tweet on Twitter saying his own farewell, I thought a more truthful factual post was needed. People who know me know that I wear my heart on my sleeve and say it how it is but I will try to keep this as diplomatic as possible without coming across as a bitter parent. First of all I would like to start on a positive note and congratulate the development squad on there league victory having watched a few of the squad develop from boys into great young men and footballers is fantastic especially Luke Russe who has been there from the beginning and deserves everything he gets because he is a total professional in everything he does. Now to the negatives, yes Lewis has been released, that's life and that is football it is a very cut throat business. But his treatment this season has been nothing short of disrespectful and a Joke. He has been told by Hargreaves that he has one of the best attitudes in the squad but he is 2 years away from being first team ready and the club do not have the budget for this. He is 19 years old so that would make him 21, so I ask the question what is the point of having an under 23's squad? Why do they bring players from the likes of Germany who are 22? The biggest kick in the balls came this week finding out that Ghassan Hassan has been offered another years contract! 😂😂 a player who can hardly even kick a ball and could not even get off the bench at Mangotsfeild and has hardly played a minute of 23's football all season. Maybe this is because his family are financing the budget some how! 🤔 this is the biggest joke of all when a local lad who has been with the club 8 years has been told they do not have the budget to develop him. And let's remember that before his injury this is a lad that scored 30 goals for fun last season in the 18's and 23's combined! Lewis picked up a knee injury early season whilst on loan at Mangotsfeild, he ended up spending over 3 months out injured. He was informed by the doctor that he had suffered a tear to his madiscas, not at one stage was he sent for a scan by the club on this or the correct treatment supplied as it really should have been operated on. Since returning in December Lewis has only been given 2 45 minutes in development games in which he has scored 3 goals. Yet another player who has been offered a contract who plays a similar position has played 90 minutes in pretty much every game since then and not scored a single goal has been offered another year contract. No surprise on this is to find out his uncle is a very good friend of Chris Hargreaves! Whilst I am on the subject of Hargreaves, Lewis Leigh Gilchrist a quality attacking midfielder who has scored a boat load of goals whilst on loan this season but has got nowhere near the first team but Hargreaves son has! Is this a coincidence? No it is not! They are both attacking midfielders but if one has been kept back at the club and not sent out on loan once because he knows he will get seriously found out at men's football and if LLG is unavailable due to his loan then who gets the call! 🤔 if anyone apart from Luke deserved their chance this season it was LLG but he has been hidden away! I know in every walk of life you have favouritism and Nepatism but some of the above is nothing more than corrupt. Im sorry that this has been a bit of a rant and there is so much more I could say but I will leave it there and wish all you gasheads the best for the future as we have both been thankful for the support you have shown him on here and some of the comments that where put on here last season about him. Lewis being the man he has now become shook Hargreaves by the hand today looked him in the eyes and said I can't wait to prove you wrong! And I do hope he comes back to haunt you! 😁 I wish nothing but the best to all the under 23's who actually deserve their massive opportunity to be there! X

Oh dear Lewis's Dad get over it and move on, I wonder if its any coincidence that you mention Nepotism, not a word that you hear very often at all but a favourite of Lewis Leigh Gilchrist dad, I know this for a fact?

Must be really difficult for Hargreaves to make decisions like that.

At the end of the day Hargreaves has just coached them to the title so I trust him to know the players their strengths and weaknesses. Obviously the players released will be disappointed and so will their parents but thats football. Obviously there will always be young players released that go on to do well at every club but If we were getting it very wrong we wouldn’t have just won the league.

I can understand the lad & his father being upset but as the saying goes when one door shuts another one opens. I seem to remember reading that being released was the spark that made Tommy Locks determined to prove to Cardiff that they were wrong in letting him go. Rejection is never pleasant in any walk of life but it’s how you move on which is the measure of a person. If LE has talent and can use this experience as motivation then he too could have a bright future. The biggest lesson he can take from this is that he needs to make his own decisions and forge his own path, no matter how well meaning his father is.

Quite wrong of dad to bad mouth club and young players. Should have simply expressed disappointment and left son to go and prove himself.
Chris Lines was previously released by Rovers then went elsewhere worked hard and earned a contract with us. I wish the lad well but don't know that after his dad's rant he would be so welcomed back.

With ghassan hassan he couldnt get a start for bishops cleeve who are rock bottom of what looks like the league above the western league[im out of touch]. So you have to wonder if keeping him on is a political or financial thing but sometimes thats just how things are i suppose. As i watched 4 games and followed the team closely it will be interesting to see who is staying and who is going from the development squad.

The side just won the league and are looking to sign more players for next season, so they need to make room. It might be a mistake, all clubs make them, but I'm sure we have our reasons.
Regarding the rant, think I recall seeing rants from a family member about c*"y, as they released him when he was younger? If it is the same one, ranting about how both Bristol clubs have treated him now.
