I'm English and try as I might I can't summon the enthusiasm that used to come so naturally when I was younger. I remember up til 2002 being massively emotionally invested in England. I then moved abroad for 7 years and lost it, never to return. I love the Gas, football and the WC but am completely indifferent to England. I know for a fact having shared this with other Gasheads that I am not alone. Maybe it's because I am at my core West Country, not English. Whilst sympathetic to the eye rolling that all the hoopla must cause in Wales/Scotland, I have nothing against England. But some people on here are genuinely mystified by anyone who is not solidly behind England. I'm equally mystified by people who put England on the same emotional level as BRFC. Different strokes. Live and let be. Nothing wrong with that. I remember having massive emotional investment in England growing up. Euro 96 was a great time with a wholly likeable team packed with character. As a club football man, I now find it difficult to flick that switch and jump on the bandwagon when big competitions come along. I don't feel a huge amount for this or any other recent England team but wish them the best today and for the rest of the competition. Roll on 4th August when the real football gets underway.

If you are English and a football fan,I too find it strange you would not want your national team to win. I can understand people caring more for Rovers, but this is the World Cup and nothing to do with being a Gashead.
I am old enough to remember 66,was on holiday in Spain at the time, and watched the match in the hotel bar with a load of Germans. Winning the World Cup was amazing, all the English people were overjoyed and walked around all night celebrating,a great feeling!
So of course I want England to win,but get the feeling the winners will be either France or Belguim.

This is real football. Same as any game in any league in any country. I really don't get where all this "Premiership isn't real football" stuff comes from. If Rovers somehow got to the highest level would a load of our fans stop going as it's not "real football"? Obviously not. If Rovers win promotion a few thousand of us have a party on Gloucester Road. If England win the World Cup this country won't know what's hit it.

Real football for me is week in week out, suffering the highs and lows. The World Cup is great and all, but the mass hysteria is generally driven and consumed by people who take a little interest in the game every couple of years.

Loving the World Cup but I just want England to fail. Won’t get a good response, no doubt, but I’m being honest. Our f.a fail us lower league teams without 2nd thought and I find it really hard to support a really bad corporation that spills over and we pay the price. Imagine the snake taking that last pen (never going to happen). Be honest: would you hope he missed? I would. its nice to know your here

No i dont want them to fail, i am English so why on earth would i?instead of being constantly let down by the golden generation some of whom refused to gel because of petty inter club jealousy and players like Gerrard and co who were scared to be seen to be working in harmony with the Man utd boys, for fear of upsetting there clubs supporters. we now have a squad with no egos ,who have obviously bought in to Gareth Southgates ethos resulting in them already achieving much more than expected, shows what can be achieved when every one pulls in the same direction led by a manager who has proved a lot of people wrong, i have said it before , its a bit like Darrell's Rovers, a man i doubted when first given the job, but whom i now believe will lead us to great things, which is why we all have to continue to have faith in Wael , Darrell and co, our time is nye, . i couldn't care less about the idiots at the FA, but this England team is ours and much more connected with fans than past teams and i would love them to win the thing, i dont agree with a couple of selections same as i dont agree with all of DCs but they are professional football managers and coaches and i am writing this on here!so i bow to there superior knowledge, do i think we will win it , no losing finalist i reckon, which is where the similarity with Rovers ends, because i believe if we all get behind Darrell's boys next year we will have great success!come on u blues!

What about lack of club respect, as oppose to club helps country. New winter break for prem teams only.... Get on you twits. You play 38 league games, enter fa cup at round 3, and have forced a group stage in the our lower league cup comp. 46 + 3 elf trophy tripe (min) +1 fa cup game (min), +1 elf cup game(min). Potential 3 play off games. = 51 games min. 3/4 ‘s of prem play this: 38 league games, 1 fa cup + 1 efl cup = 40. But they need the winter break to make England better. Do these people not realise that 80% + of the prem is foreign players and will also favour other countries more than ours. Head scratch.

One of the most bizarre threads, question and post in Gaschat history. I can't believe people are dignifying it with a response to the question. Like you just did 😂. I’ve tried for years to enjoy England but I just can’t. It just doesn’t excite me, it does quite the opposite in fact. Don't worry about it, ggmi is just pised that he didn't start a thread himself.

Really enjoying the unexpected success of the England team to date. Shops are doing a roaring trade in drinks and food, as people have house parties, and the pubs with big screens must be raking it in.
With social media, the feel-good factor has been spread far and wide with some very witty memes, just what we need after months of doom mongering and Brexit debate.
If England weren't playing, I'd have no problem backing Scotland, Wales or N. Ireland.
Let's enjoy it while it lasts!

😂 In an all seated stadium with a referee wired up and waiting for instructions from a room full of people watching screens in an unknown location. Yeah right...

Defence still looks very suspect to win a major tournament, as soon as a decent team attacks us with purpose we will crumble.
