Question, how many real Bristol Rovers and Bristol City fans are there overall?
What I mean is if you were to ask the people of Bristol and beyond what football club do they support, how many first clubs would be either Rovers or City?
You cant go by current gate averages alone as many fans from both clubs cant get to games due to work, family, lack of money, living away etc..etc. Im also not asking for either clubs diehard support core which is around 6,000 for us and 10,000 for City when things get bad at either club over the years.
You also cant go by the support that either club takes to wembley as apart from our conference final we always take 35,000/40,000 as do City. We still took 31,000 in 2015 when our club was at its lowest ever point.
Im talking about the fans that Rovers or City are the first result that they look for on a saturday at 5pm?
Those who turn into the radio for games, read the evening post match reports, go online to see the hightlights, read on either clubs forums.Banter with the other clubs fans at work...etc.
Id say there are around 25,000 Rovers fans and 30,000 City fans..

Interesting discussion but why have you included C*ty in this? Thought this was a Bristol Rovers forum.

I reckon you'd get 100,000 of each. Of course if you asked them if they'd ever been to a game, you'd get a different result.

Because premiership football has taken over and while I dont like the buggers, I respect any true City fan much, much more than some glory seeking fan of Man Utd,Liverpool,Chelsea that was born in Bristol. Plus they share our city with us.

I'm a Rovers fan through and through, but my second team is Chelsea as my dad supports both and obviously because of my name and I do like to see Villa do well as my Mum is a brummy and supports them But if I was asked who my main team was it'd always be Gas first and always will be

You have to cap it at the west country region otherwise trying to predict support nation/worldwide would be a bit ridiculous.
I would say 15k tops. So 9,000 regulars who go to games plus allowing for at most another 6,000 in the wider Bristol area who could go but for whatever reason can't get to games or have stopped going but who still consider themselves Rovers fans first and foremost and possibly listen via radio etc.
This obviously excludes the people who would go to a showpiece occasion but would otherwise not really take an interest in the club's fortunes on a day to day basis.

That low? for a club that is from a city that has a split of nearly 500,000 living in it and well over 1 million in the greater region.. You make a valid points tho.

A sad indictment to our city / region is that in our natural catchment area I bet there are more glory hunting parasite Liverpool or Manchester U fans than Rovers and City put together.

Both Bristol clubs lack of success, and our lack of decent facilities has an effect.
We've been starved of top flight Football since the professional era.
City have spent what? 3 or 4 years and us none in both our entire history's.
We haven't even been in the 2nd tier for nearly 30.
Our support is very good IMO for a club that's achieved f*ck all.
I don't think there's much of a difference between us and City, put us in a spanking new stadium in The Championship and we'd get similar crowds.

I just don't buy it that there is latent fanbase of tens if not hundreds of thousands of Gasheads that aren't going. That isn't to say that there aren't potential fans or fairweather who would come along if Rovers were promoted better, had a decent stadium and the whole club itself was packaged as a product that could compete with the likes of the typical premiership sides. But the question is about people who would say without hesitation that they support Rovers - to me that is 'hardcore' support and I would be surprised if we had any more than 6,000 from round here who just aren't going to games. Maybe I could be underestimating and that could be closer to 20,000 but then if you think that the hardcore PLUS the fairweathers amounted to 40k at Wembley then you would have to put the actual number of 'proper' fans much much lower than 40k.

Bristol also has the biggest Semi Pro, Amateur and Grass Roots scene outside of London.
I know lots of people who class themselves as City or Gas "fans" who rarely go because they're playing themselves.
Another factor.

I think you can only go by the attendances, anything else is pure guesswork.
Many fans cant go for whatever reason on both sides so you cant factor that in either.
Would be interesting to see how many we would get in a new ground in the Championship though!!

Don’t know the answer to this but an indication that ours is shrinking is by the amount of city shirts in places like kingswood. My nephew is in a huge minority in his school and that’s in kingswood. Most of the kids support the teds and who could blame them.
