Until both clubs had stadiums with decent capacities and both had a proper promotion push it seems impossible to know the answer?
If the UWE was built and we had a chance of promotion then you'd hope 15K plus would turn up for our final games in Div 1? If we then ever got to a Premiership promotion charge you'd hope even more would attend but that's really all pie in the sky whilst we were stuck at Tents R Us.

Don’t know the answer to this but an indication that ours is shrinking is by the amount of city shirts in places like kingswood. My nephew is in a huge minority in his school and that’s in kingswood. Most of the kids support the teds and who could blame them. I live and work in kingswood and the amount of City shirts I see worn is shocking to be fair. And thats changed in the last two years. The Wood use to be 90% gas,but if Im honest it is only 70% maybe even less now.

I think we has about 21,000 and City about 24,000. It's just that they can get them in to their ground

I think you can only go by the attendances, anything else is pure guesswork. Many fans cant go for whatever reason on both sides so you cant factor that in either. Would be interesting to see how many we would get in a new ground in the Championship though!! I guess as has happened with clubs that were pretty much the same size as us,or even smaller then us before they got new grounds and then had there premiership runs eg: Hull, swansea, Huddesfield, Bournemouth, Wigan ,Reading, Cardiff ,Fulham..etc it would be the same here regardless of what the 82ers think. New grounds increase the footfall of fans for each club.Citys crowds have gone up from 11,000/12,000 each week while in league one 3/4 years ago to playing at a new Ashton gate in front of 20,000 each week. Its the same for every club with any potenial, and we would be the same. Maybe one day we will find out.

They ought to include it on the census, then we'd know!

I hate to say it has probably become worse than most posters have indicated. No scientific proof, but on an estimate of different individuals that attend at least Rovers match throughout a season (excluding neutrals) + those supporters not able to attend, I would argue that we are closer to a paltry 20,000-25,000. By a similar measure I would estimate that City's overall fan base is close to double that figure or more.
Success on the field trumps ground size, but the prolonged period that they have been in a higher league than us as well as a bigger (and now much more luxurious) stadium has really tipped things in their favour since the 1970s. Our opportunities to leapfrog the City came in 1983 and 1996, when their home crowds slumped to 4700 and 7000 respectively. Unfortunately, Rovers had enough troubles of their own at this time.
So is that it...game over? As long as the DoG keeps bankrolling them and we struggle for enough investment to keep our head above water, I am afraid to say that it is not going to get better and may get a lot worse, but neither are that good for a city and region the size of Bristol.

Social media gives you a useful perspective and must be close to best view you can get as why like / follow if no interest?
Facebook page likes - Rovers 109k - City 124k
Twitter followers - Rovers 80k - City 163k
Can’t account for the radically different proportion of Twitter followers vs Facebook but I’m sure somebody can explain it! And do a better analysis if they have the tools

I dont agree. I would say that your figure for us is correct,20,000/25,000 but to say that City's have double the support overall base, based upon the question I asked is insane. Ok they can currently attract double what we can given there league level and ground, but if your saying that if we have 25,000 overall fans - the mighty Bristol City have 50,000 then your having a giraffe!

Interesting discussion but why have you included C*ty in this? Thought this was a Bristol Rovers forum. Also can we please refer to them as the 82ers rather than Ci*y ,or the Sh1!heads or the six fingered knuckle dragging inbreds please ? If we’re going to be nice in case there’s any children watching perhaps we can call them the poo heads which is what my 5 year old daughter calls them. Thank you.

I don't know and you don't know the real answer, but a difference of only 5,000 in the overall support base is far too low IMO, particularly when they have been in a higher division than us for f'ing ages - much as it pains me to say. I don't live in Bristol anymore, so I don't have the on the ground knowledge that most others would on here, but when I am home, I see far too many City shirts in North Bristol for my liking.
There are plus points. Our home attendances holding up in the Conference is testament to a much stronger core support than we had during the dark days of '86-87. We, generally have a pretty strong away support.
But another statistic to throw out there - over the last 20 years, City's average attendance comes out at 39th best in the 4 leagues, Rovers come out at 54th. However, to see how things have changed recently, last season, Rovers were 54th best supported (about par for the course and close to our league position) whereas City were 28th best home average. Increased capacity + a fairly decent league showing has improved their support.
However, before the lurkers from OTIB get themselves excited, with Bristol being the 8th largest city in England, and well healed to boot, the support for both teams is water poor.

The time will come soon, if nothing is done about our club, they will soar away from us forever.
But at the moment, still, with 8,000 in our poxy stadium and in L1, and 17,000 in their theatre of screams, we could still keep up. A new stadium and we can easily get 15,000.
It can be done. Whether it will be done is a different matter.

What were Brighton & HA getting at the Withdean and then at the AMEX whilst in the Championship? I know they don’t have any real local competition but I reckon we would emulate their kind of support.

Ultimately though with the investment the DoG has and continues to put in they will accelerate away. Unless we get our act together it is only a matter of time. My thanks go to DC and Lee Johnson respectively for keeping us in the race for the timebeing. Albeit we are lagging a long way behind of course.

I reckon you'd get 100,000 of each. Of course if you asked them if they'd ever been to a game, you'd get a different result. I can go with this. In my Grandads era, you would watch Rovers one week and then City the next. So, I reckon out of this 100k there are at least 50k of cross overs, if Rovers were in the Prem, they would stay up for Match of the day to see how we smashed Man City that weekend (same for the other lot, except I can't bring myself to writing that!).

And do a better analysis if they have the tools I haven't looked into the ones that follow each, cba to and it'll only represent a small percentage of both but that is absolutely not 109/124k fans when you consider journalists/media corporations, sponsors, betting 'tipsters', bots et al. And you'd imagine they get thousands more media outlets interested in them given the league and stature they play at. FWIW, none of it matters IMO. I'd personally rather have a smaller, more loyal fanbase (that stick with us through relegation out of the FL altogether) than switch allegiances because they put a new stand in and played the Manchester clubs in a side-chick cup competition...

That said, I don't think it's ridiculous to suggest that a ratio of 2:1 of teds:gas might exist if you questioned a sample of people in Bristol on their allegiances.

I wouldn't say its water poor. Bristol is a 2 team City. If you add up both clubs average attendances it equates to about 30,000. Which is similar to what Leeds average, which only have the one club in the City. Would you say their support is water poor? Only Villa average more than 30,000 in The Championship.

They averaged 21,000 last season and we got about 8,000. Thats the only way you can assess fanbase, not 20-30,000 day trippers going to Wembley many of whom are armchair Prem side fans Apart from a few seasons in the 50's they have always had bigger crowds so the rubbish about East Bristol and North Bristol being ours is patently sh**. I don't care how many they get, if and when we get some success the crowds will come and 13,000 in the Mem will be a far better old skool experience than the sanitised corporate aimed City ground.

The other factor is that apart from a very few moments in the sunshine, both teams have been monumentally sh**e over their entire histories. Don't tell me that if Liverpool/Everton ManUre/Citeh etc etc had been equally crap they would be pulling any more than us two.Nottingham had the champions of Europe and even County had spells in the top flight but their combined gates aren't that much different to ours nowadays.
