If we hire Garner and it all goes tits up, I will personally hold pirate responsible. Pretty sure no one at Rovers had heard of him until he was mentioned by pirate a year ago on here

Really don’t get the obsession with this guy He has worked at close quarters with some good people like Holloway, Pulis, Warnock, Pardew, Venables, Lennie Lawrence and Gerry Francis. Was First Team Coach when Crystal Palace were promoted to the Premier League and Garner remained as First Team Coach when Pulis was appointed. Palace retained their Premier League status for the first time in the club’s history finishing in 11th place and Pulis won the LMA Manager of the Year award. Followed Pulis to West Brom and was responsible for the players training regime from Monday to Thursday. He helped bring through talents such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Moses, Nathaniel Clyne, Wilfried Zaha, Sean Scannell and Jonny Williams at Crystal Palace. Built up good contacts from his time at Palace and West Brom, knows the u18 and u23 scene really well which will be invaluable for recruitment and managers will be more inclined to send us loan players with Garners reputation as a good coach, especially someone like Mourinho who helped him with his UEFA Pro License. Yeah I know. I read it all last year. But he hasn’t ventured beyond coaching. I don’t get the massive excitement.

Bet victor have just suspended the market think it’s a done deal Yes they've closed the book at Bet Victor and Garner narrows from 12-1 to 4/6 overnight on Sky Bet. Looks like word is out that a decision is close.

Coach doesn't translate to leader, as has been illustrated numerous times before.

So has the Crystal Palace tea lady. The fact he's coached players doesn't make him cut out to manage a lower league team. This won't end well if the case.

Possibly but recommended to us last December by both Rickie Lambert and Tony Pulis who both know the guy better than you or me.

I've not seen the list of applicants or interested parties Pirate. It's a shame Cotterill has his 82'ers connections as if you took that away, I think he would be the ideal candidate.

Can we try and garner some support for the lad and not write him off before he's even kicked a ball (or signed a contract)

I think it will be a great appointment and shows some ambition from the board. For his age his cv is extremely impressive. Very happy if this is true

I wouldn't have been against him getting the job in the summer funnily enough if GC had been given until the end of last season, but GC did a great job in spite of mine and many others being sceptical at first.
Now though I just feel concerned if we appointed Ben Garner. He has no affinity with the Gas as far as I'm aware and I would be concerned at someone coming in and tearing up the rule book on what has been working so well for us so far this year. He'd surely want to put his own stamp of coaching on the team and who knows how that would go? Big gamble especially considering it would be his first managerial appointment. I think an internal appointment for continuity until the end of the season is the most risk-free option.

We both know people in football look out for one another and this is simply a case in point.

It is a good pedigree for a coach and I’d be interested to see if he surprises. I’ll be concerned he bombs though. I’d just rather someone with a bit of experience. Slim pickings unfortunately.
