I just thought it was interesting that we had gone all out for a striker that has never scored double figures in a season (with a best return of 8 goals) and offered a contract that has "set him up" and "allows him to develop his life off the field." Umm he only became available @ 8:30 PM on transfer deadline day... not a lot of "all out" involved i would suggest Seems strange "he only became available at 8.30pm" considering they didn't bring in a replacement, but I guess they felt they could cope without him considering he hasn't started their last 7 league games. I meant "all out" with the contract offer, which must be considerable if the comments of Mark Robins are true. Perhaps that is why we couldn't get a winger in if we put all our eggs in the Clarke-Harris basket? Just a thought.

Interesting article in a Coventry Rag :-
Out-going Coventry City striker Jonson Clarke-Harris started transfer deadline day wanted by two of the top sides in the division and ended up at the second worst team in League One.
Sky Blues boss Mark Robins revealed the 24-year-old had interest from automatic promotion chasing Portsmouth and Sunderland, as well as play-off hopefuls Fleetwood Town.
But on a remarkable day of events, City went from possibly getting a fee for the centre-forward to simply getting him off the wage bill.
Asked if there was any other interest, Robins said: “There was Fleetwood, there was Sunderland and there was Portsmouth early on.
“I have no idea what happened."
“I was told Portsmouth and Sunderland were going to make a bid so then you think what that will look like, and can we do something ourselves off the back of it. But we have had limited time to do it.
“But it just came at the end of play that Tommy Widdrington (City’s former head of recruitment) rang Dave Boddy and expressed Bristol Rovers’ interest and that was done in a short space of time.
“Jonno was in Rotherham and drove down and got the paper work done at quarter to eleven last night, so it was a close one.
“Yesterday morning he wasn’t going anywhere. It just unfolded over the day.”
Robins revealed that Clarke-Harris has earned himself a lucrative deal at the Memorial Stadium that sets him up in life.
“I couldn’t stand in Jonno’s way either because of the contract that he’s earned, which is outstanding for him and allows him to develop his life off the field as well,” he said .
“It’s a deal that sets him up.
“The players that have gone haven’t been in the team of late and it just became clear that they would need to play and the window presented us with opportunities to move on and we’re left with the players that we have.”
Abu Ogogo has also signed for the Gas, joining earlier in the day after cancelling his City contract by mutual consent and joining on a free, just seven months after signing on a free in the summer from Shrewsbury Town.
Explaining what had gone wrong for Ogogo, Robins said: “He’s a great lad and just got his head down and worked but just the way the team is evolving means we couldn’t get him in.“He has gone off the Bristol Rovers with Jonno where they will try to further their careers.”
So we did have some money left in the pot or Wael put his hand in his pocket

Let’s hope it works out then as must be a fair salary and a long contract you would think. Hope there’s a relegation clause if we drop

I'd assume that rather than a lucrative wage he got a substantive signing on fee. If the big hitters in league one were after him then I'd expect a considerable fee was expected. Did we just give him a standard contract but with a substantive signing on fee. In your 20's Anything over 50k I'd class as life changing as it's a big chunk of mortgage paid

Guess it depends on how much is true and how much is paper talk to deflect any supporter criticism etc. Personally I think he should do well and will be a good foil for our other strikers - here's hoping!

Former Middlesbrough player Carlos de Pena is also available.

Hi Bristol-based Cov fan here in peace.
JCH: not a bad signing for you lot at all. Bad bits first - for a strong player, he doesn't stay on his feet very well in physical challenges. Doesn't have the impact on games he should and lacks confidence in 1 on 1 situations. Good bits - Very good signing as an impact sub. Plays best when angry - in fact on his day he can be a handful for any defender in this league (trouble is, that's about one game in a dozen!) Does win headers in / around penalty box. Decent, powerful left foot and reasonably quick too. Makes intelligent runs too.
Will he be your saviour? He could be, if his attitude is right.
As for Ogogo, he was excellent in his first game for us, then has been very disappointing (has seemed off the pace). Think he has possibly not recovered from an injury he had last season. Puzzled by him: if you can get him to full fitness, he is definitely worth having as he was one of the better midfielders in L1 last year.
Good luck for rest of season: I predict that JCH will definitely score when he next plays at the Ricoh!

As I’ve put in another thread about JCH, he definitely has unfulfilled potential. I’ve watched 3 times this year and of those 3 games I thought his job was more about bringing others into the game, like Chaplin, Thomas and Baylis rather than being an out and out finisher. Thought he had an excellent game against P’boro at the Ricoh and as a result Thomas had an absolute MOM performance that night making runs into the box and finding space in and around the area. I see him in exactly the same role for us, bring Sercombe and Jakubiak/Nichols into play and being the physical presence that we have needed since the ginger wife shagger in Gaffney left. Gaffney wasn’t prolific by any means but would walk straight into our current side. Looking forward to what Ogogo brings us. Can’t help but think that’s a strange addition for the amount of CMs we have.

Hope the cov two come good he must know them, wonder whether we were in for Pitman JCH younger and hopefully hungrier shame stewy not here to coach, always thought Rammell could teach the dark arts to our strikers.

I just thought, if we really needed to we could always sign one from below the National League South/North as they aren't restricted by the transfer window, but obviously ones potentially capable of stepping up are few and far between. For me though, the best bet would probably be approaching the former Dinamo Zagreb youth, Ajax youth, Braga B and former Croatia youth lad Robert Muric.

Can we sign a player from that level unless they were released from contract? Appreciate they don't have a window but if was a transfer would we not be restricted? Thought it was only unattached players we could get? Think a lower league option would be more likely as can't see the club pursuing the overseas options unfortunately

Think a lower league option would be more likely as can't see the club pursuing the overseas options unfortunately Players below the Conference South/North can be signed outside of the window as far as I'm aware, unless the rules have changed. I could be mistaken on that though, so don't take that as gospel. Another option is Chris Eagles who can do a job on either wing. He last played for Ross County (4 assists in 9 games) in the 2017/18 season and has been a free agent since April. Worth inviting him in to training to assess him if possible. Edit: Eagles had a decent impact at Port Vale at this level when they were struggling with 4 goals from 16 starts, including 2 screamers:

Seems reasonable, the player cannot help it if he has a **** goal scoring record; however, we need somebody who can keep us up, like a Andy Rammell, no wonder after being told players out (who were on a bid wages) = players in, we could have expected somebody better JCH. How the F' do you know. Tell us how many times you have seen him play in the flesh?
For god sake watch the guy play for us and then make up your mind.
Welcome to the club JCH. Please ignore nonsense like this.
Never seen him play, lets welcome him, and hope he is the dogs; however, imo what we need now, and what I thought we were being promised, is a proven goal scorer, to save the team and club from relegation. What will be a telling point today is whether the fella starts, or on the bench, and if and when he comes on. Tbh none of our other three attackers score enough goals, lets hope the kid starts.

GC never promised us a proven goal scorer, in fact he said a 20 goals a season striker would always be out of our price range, what he did promise was players who could improve the team and both signings seem capable of doing that, whether they do is always going to be an unknown until they've played a few games.
