Bolton in the FA Cup 4th Round 1968/69? We won 2-1. I think we struggled to beat Kettering in the 3rd Round after a replay. We drew Everton away in the 5th Round & the game was off due to weather I think, so we went into the hat for the QF & drew Man U. Unfortunately we lost 1-0 at Everton 😩 It was 1969, I was there too, Wayne Jones came on as sub, and scored both goals I believe. I was at the Everton game too, I think that it was that game that prompted the sale of Larry LLoyd.

The WBA Quarter Final, we haven't got the Blue half of the city excited for 20 -30 years

Craven Cottage 1958 - Q/F FA Cup lost 3-1. can't quite remember that one - prob cos I wasn't born. but in 70s, 80s - the Ipswich games and Southampton - crowds well over 20,000. a shame we aren't going to bring crowds and games like that to our ground in the next decade. Just going almost back to the thread - what's the biggest crowd for a Rovers away game you've attended ? apart from finals at Wembley/Millenium.

We went on a 'Football Special' from Temple Meads. As I remember the Lancashire Constabulary herded us all together at one end so the Bolton 'fans' could lob bricks at us from outside and wouldn't let us move away until one of them was hit by a 'stray' brick? As I remember we had a 'Police Escort' back to the station. That was a very young team managed by Fred Ford. We had the 'Twin Towers' of Stuart Taylor and Larry Lloyd at the back and Frankie Prince doing the 'rough stuff' in midfield. I think Bobby Jones went to full back when Lyndsey Parsons went off injured and Wayne Jones came on? I booked to go to the Everton match and when it was called off on the Saturday and rescheduled for the Wednesday, me and my mates 'bunked off' school in the afternoon to go to the match. We didn't get into trouble because our form teacher was a crazy Everton fan and we had to give him a match programme and a full run down on the game when we got back!! We lost to a Joe Royle goal, having dominated long periods of the game, came away with praise from all the Everton fans around us saying what a great young team we had and how we didn't deserve to lose.

I vividly remember a 6:1 Anglo Scottish defeat at AG in ‘78. That tw@t Garland got on his hands and knees to head one in. Fkin seething, I still have a bit of an issue with people who have curly / wavey hair. Somerton Park ‘82 I had erased that from my memory, hated him fow that, in front of our fans as I remember

Aston Villa - early 1970's and the Tote stood upon the mighty Holte End
There was a running battle for what seemed like an eternity, and then the Villa fans disappeared [back in the days of slipping down behind the stand] Suddenly thousands of them came charging at us, I was just a young teenager and along with my mate stood behind a hand rail/bar and prayed no one saw us.
The Rovers fans escaped across the pitch, leaving us stood on the Holte for the entire match, we lost 2-1 and were the quietest Gas heads you had ever seen.
Have to say we were bricking it the whole time and wishing we were in the open end, as it was then, with the rest of our clan
Oh happy dayz.

FA Cup 4th round v Derby County Baseball Ground. Mid-week evening match about 1975 lost 0-2. Think bad weather postponed the Saturday match. We attempted the postponed game on a self hire coach from Speedwell, we got word on route and did a U-turn back down to Birmingham and watched Villa v Sheffield United, we stood with the blade fans.

Good question which I can't answer but I believe it was probably the match I mentioned. I can recall many of us young boys watching the match (girls rarely went in those days) were lifted over the crowd and we were allowed to stand/sit on the running track around the pitch. The ground was rammed - I would imagine the crowd was in the order of 45k - I travelled up by train with my dad. The biggest crowd ever to watch Bristol Rovers was at Newcastle in 1951 - another cup game - too far to travel in those days and I was much too young - the crowd I believe was around 63k - we drew 0-0 and lost the replay at Eastville.

Mine was the old Meadow Lane, Notts County ground in 1970 or 71. It really as an old-fashioned ground. The stands were wooden and the main stand was all standing I seem to remember. The terraces were sleepers and ash, and it really was in n a terrible state. Football watching facilities were dreadful in that period, and that ground would probably be condemned under present H & S rules. The area the stadium was in is called The Meadows, a name that brings to mind pleasant, sunny uplands with cattle peacefully grazing on the verdant herniated. Nothing could be further from the truth! The area consisted of a grim Victorian housing estate with 2 up 2 down terraces of back to back houses, probably only equipped with outdoor privvies. It made St Pauls or Easton look like Stoke Bishop. I next went there for the area final on the Dafty Cup. We outnumbered their fans that evening, the ground had been renewed, and the grim Victorian streets had been cleared away and replaced with grim, modern dwellings, no doubt equipped with indoor bathrooms and sanitation. What happened in the first game?, I hear you ask. 2-0 down at half time, went on to win 3-2. Harold was among the scorers. The players came out and talked to the fans outside the changing rooms while we were waiting to board the supporters club coaches. Nowadays if you want to visit a sh** ground with open terraces etc, why, visit the Mem! I went to that game. On the morning of the match, Rick Sheppard got out of bed with a bad back so an emergency phone call was made back to Bristol and reserve goalkeeper Alan Clarke was hastily driven up to Nottingham. Might have been his league debut as he was very young and very nervous. Notts two goals were an o.g. and a penalty. Seem to remember Bobby Jones had a brilliant second half and took them apart, scored at least once (maybe twice) and as you said, ran out 3-2 winners.
On the strength of that win, went to watch Rovers at Brighton the following Tuesday night. Don't think Ricky was fully fit as he didn't move too well. Rovers lost 3-1.

First away game, 1964/5, February or March, we were about to blow a promotion challenge. Drew 1-1 at the old Elm Park, Reading. Alfie Biggs had just returned from a knee injury, been out for about four months, and headed the equaliser from a long free kick from Gwyn Jones. Went there on the train with two school friends. Couldn't believe what a small ground it was in comparison to Eastville, yet another small club from those times that has overtaken us.

Watford 1973/74 season. I was impressed to see that they also had a dog track around the pitch. I believe this was my first away game as well...I was 10 years old. My old man never had a car so when we lived in Bristol (till I was 7) it was home games and reserves alternating each week. Once we moved to Wembley we didn't get to any games unless we were visiting family back in Bristol and Rovers happened to be home. However, Watford was on the same local train service as Wembley...so with Rovers gunning for promotion we went to see Warboys, Bannister & co battle to a drab 0-0 at Vicarage Road. Think I was most impressed by Trevor Jacobs that day so it shows you what a poor game it was!

My first away game with Rovers was a 1-0 away defeat against Exeter City on the 15th of March 1994. Rather oddly in January of that year I'd been to Old Trafford for Manchester United vs Portsmouth in the League Cup. Went to two other new grounds that year, a 0-0 draw between England and Norway at Wembley and Rangers being defeated at Ibrox by AEK Athens in the Champions League. Odd looking back.

A schollboy international at the old Wembley in 1954 England versus Scotland was my first real away day. For the Rovers it was May 1967 against Watford at Vicarage Road and we lost 3-1 with the "Baron" scoring our goal. Eastville was a far superior stadium to Vicarage Road and I recall that some of their ground was grass banking! How things have changed.
