If this lot could have played together it would have been a pleasure to watch:-
GK - Parkin LB - Brown CB - Yates CB - Tillson RB - Alexander LW - Purnell CM - Astafjevs CM - Shaw RW - Walters CF - Hayles CF - Lambert
Brilliant defence, a midfield full of talent and creativity and goals galore.
What a side it would have been. Sure plenty will want to swap a few around but it would take some beating.

Thought about maybe Holloway for some more bite but think those two are some of the most talented players were ever had at the club.

Talking of Walters, Messi scored a free kick for Barcelona tonight that was almost as good as Wally's against Stoke all those years ago...

Based on the best I've seen but not sure they would fit together to produce a winning side: (old style 4-4-2)
Jim Eadie
Phil Roberts Steve Yates Larry Lloyd Vaughan Jones David Williams Wayne Jones
Harold Jarman Alfie Biggs Alan Warboys Mark Walters
Subs: Paul Randall, Barry Hayles, Jamie Cureton, Ian Holloway, Mike Barrett, Andy Tillson, Nigel Martyn
Based on their influence and relative success at Rovers and also the level at which they played - so no places for the recent players who haven't gone beyond the Third Tier (yet)! Some of you may have to check the history books!

Some of you may have to check the history books! That would be pretty close to my side, although I'd have to switch out Lloyd and Biggs as I never saw either play for us and I'd put Eadie and Yates on the subs bench. So to your seven (Roberts P, Jones V, Williams D, Jones W, Jarman, Warboys, Walters) I'd promote Martyn, Tillson and Hayles from your subs bench and include Stu Taylor as the other centre half to add no-nonsense defending to Tillson's finesse (and what a threat we'd have from corners!). The seven on the bench would be Eadie, Yates, Mabbutt G (never saw his dad in the b & w either), Barrett, Holloway, Cureton, Randall (who just pipped Lambert and Jason Roberts to the last seat). There are personal "cult" players like Stewart, Taylor G, Mehew, Pritchard, Gilbert, Godfrey and Disley that I enjoyed watching play but recognise would never make our best XI and faded heroes like Ball and Francis whose Rovers careers were nuggets of gold but too brief to make an all time best team. Lambert and Disley apart I don't seem to have mentioned many who played for us since we first dropped into the fourth tier.

Watched a few games at Eastville as a 9 or 10 year old but didn't really watch 'properly' until we went to Twerton. My team is therefore mid/late eighties onwards and although in some positions there may have been players who went on to play at higher levels than those I've selected there is some personal favouritism
Martyn
Smith Tillson Yates Jones
Bodin Holloway Astavjevs Walters
Stewart Penrice

This is always tricky. Our most successful sides have always had grit and have been able to play a direct game as well as being able to get it down on the floor. I hope this is reasonably well balanced, with Smith overlapping Mehew, who liked to ghost inside and Archer providing the pace on the left side. This is only players I have seen in the flesh so bear in mind I had a big gap of not seeing us play in the late nineties and early noughties. As a result I never saw Astafyevs, Hayles, Roberts, Cureton, Ellington, Shore, Walters etc.
GK: Martyn RB: Smith CB: Yates CB: Elliott LB: V Jones (capt) RM: Mehew CM: Holloway CM: Waddock LM: Archer CF: Lambert CF: Stewart
Subs: Parkin, Tillson, Pritchard, Lines, Bodin, D. White, Snake
Jock very unlucky to miss out but Pritchard’s versatility just edges him off the bench.

Jamie Shore was a hell of a player, one of the most talented players to grace the quarters. Such a shame his career was ruined by his knee injury, but then without that injury we'd have never seen him as he'd have had a good premier league career. May have been unfortunate timing for him as perhaps the same injury now will have been repairable?

Pretty wild that you're all limiting yourself to former Rovers players...
