Agreed. Also it helps connect the fans with the team more as we all have a greater love for "one of our own"

Don’t get me wrong about it’s purpose and my fondness for it but I’m just thinking from a brutal financially minded point of view.

We cannot afford not too I'm told Rhys Kavanagh has amazing ability expect him to kick on next year. I agree. For me the development squad fulfills two roles, firstly a "bridging" team for young talent and former youth team players and secondly a pool of players to backfill cup games and cover injury and suspensions. It should, at least in theory, allow a smaller but better quality, first team squad. Given how few cup games we normally play a season I doubt we need to worry about having a pool of players! Only really Kelly played more than a few token games last season. The likes of Rollin, Kilgour, Russe and Moore probably didn't play 90 mins of games between them.

Love the concept but need to see more guys breaking through into the first team and holding down a place. Cant see it continuing much longer due to cost and the fact that any youngster good enough is usually snatched up by Prem Academies. It’s yet another DC ‘requirement’ that costed a lot of money but didn’t fulfil its potential. Its plain stupid to say its a "dc requirement". When wael took over at the club he couldnt stop talking about a category 2 academy, development squad and a state of the art training facility for the whole club. Before he arrived dc was happily working under higgs building a first team to progress. Whats the point of trying to rewrite what actually happened?

Imo the development squad is the last place we should be looking for savings. If we get rid with the current transfer window rules we'd have to have a larger 1st team squad. I think a smaller squad with hopefully a bit more quality supplemented by the development squad is the way we should look to go.

I would expect a natural timelag before this really starts to show benefits. Give it another two seasons, provided it stays supported though.

I think we should run with a squad of 19 or 20 and keep plugging away with the development squad to support the first team. Its only been running for 2 seasons and has several decent prospects with the ability to make a breakthrough.

My daughters school regularly have 'after school hours' sports sessions where they have anything from rounder's to netball, all ran by Bristol Sport and includes 2 tickets to a future football or rugby match at Trashton. As well as attracting potential new fans this could also identify potential young players at the same time. I can't remember ever having anything like this from Bristol Rovers, and if they do its obviously not working as people I know who don't like sport know what Bristol Sport is. Rovers Community Trust do lots mate, haven’t got the same level of resources that Bristol Sport do but do a fantastic job.

Wasn't it a few years ago almost every Rovers supporter was moaning that we didn't have a reserve team ? This is was the Development squad is !! Test young players, keep some squad players match fit and help players to get back tofitness after injury.
With regards the Academy, every league club, whatever academy level status they are, gets significant financial support from the EFL to fund their academy -I think it was around 50% mark - but stand to be corrected.
What must be a big outlay for the club is the renting of pitches for the U18s, development squad and academy - both for training and home matches. Meanwhile, The Colony keeps growing weeds !!??

Yes DC doing the right thing. Surprised for an established L1 club that Walsall didn't have this in place.

The fact we are even having to discuss this shows what dire position we appear to be in. Wael needs to step up or move along now. I feel that soon fans will have to make their thoughts known during games if nothing changes before start of new season.
There seems to be the position from people on here of "who else is going to buy the club..." well of our debts continue there will not be a club. Questions need to be asked and answered genuinely, ive supported this club since as far back as i can remember... and will be gutted if we are shafted, this silent wait and see what happens approach doesn't sit well with me.

I’ll go against the post above...
3.5m in debt. It’s being underwritten (to an extent by someone) and that would be the owners. Perhaps we should support them a little more considering the investment they are having to put in.
It would be madness to assume it lasts forever, and there are genuine concerns.
We so badly need a stadium.

The format of the development squad whereby we signed 10-15 players up to a professional deal to prove their worth was unsustainable as shown by the recent accounts and I don’t think we will see a repeat of that but I’m not against us having an U23 team to compete in the central league. It provides a decent standard of football where the U18’s can start transitioning to the men’s game and the overlooked first team pro’s can keep their match fitness levels up, so definitely in favour of keeping it around in some shape or form. As for the youth teams, where would we be today without some of the brilliant talent that has come through it over the years? It wasn’t so long ago that we had 4 academy first team regulars in Harrison, Lockyer, Lines and Ollie Clarke. Would people really want this gone when cut backs can be made in other areas?

Article about Sunderland's powerless youth set-up. www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/sunderland-owner-confirms-two-players-16364233Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has revealed that two of the Black Cats highly-rated academy stars will join Liverpool this summer. Speaking to Sunderland fan podcast the Roker Report , Donald discussed accusations in the Daily Mail that the club's academy was under threat, admitting that he is powerless to stop some of their starlets leaving for bigger sides. As both players are under 17, Sunderland cannot offer them contracts and Liverpool are within the rules to take them. Instead, the Sunderland owner says that he has negotiated sell-on clauses for the pair and that the Black Cats' good relationship with the Reds could lead to his side bringing players in from Liverpool in the future. “We are having our players poached. There are two players who will go to Liverpool," he said. “We tried to keep them. We said to the parents ‘If you really want to go you have to put it in writing’. The parents have written in and said ‘Thank you Sunderland, we want our lads to go to Liverpool’. “We could turn around and make that awkward and then they will go in the summer anyway. “Or we can talk to Liverpool and try and get sell-ons, which they don’t have to give us. Both of those lads, because of the relationship we’ve got with Liverpool which could see some players come in the other direction, we’ve opted for a good working relationship (with). “We’ve asked them if they will stay and they said no. So we made a commercial decision to try and get the best arrangement.”
