As per the title. Can we really afford a development squad and the youth teams. Youth is the heart of every club but with saints, city etc stealing anyone worth having. Is it worth it considering our position? I’d love to see the positives and negatives of this. I wonder also how much is costs versus how much it’s made over the years. UTG

You could then cut ten footballing staff from the wage bill plus the players and associated costs. Would save a small fortune!

Maybe the community trust could take this over? Is that even possible? It is more of a community thing after all I guess!

My daughters school regularly have 'after school hours' sports sessions where they have anything from rounder's to netball, all ran by Bristol Sport and includes 2 tickets to a future football or rugby match at Trashton.
As well as attracting potential new fans this could also identify potential young players at the same time.
I can't remember ever having anything like this from Bristol Rovers, and if they do its obviously not working as people I know who don't like sport know what Bristol Sport is.

We need to bin every non essential service and only bring them back when revenue increases with the exception of scouting

Love the concept but need to see more guys breaking through into the first team and holding down a place.
Cant see it continuing much longer due to cost and the fact that any youngster good enough is usually snatched up by Prem Academies.
It’s yet another DC ‘requirement’ that costed a lot of money but didn’t fulfil its potential.

They are merging some teams as most clubs in the FL are, so we should see younger players play in the Development team

If the tribunal payments were better then yeah, crack on with developing talent for Chelski and Arse

To enable it to fulfill its potential players have to be given a chance in the first team and we seem reluctant to do that, if we cant afford to buy quality then surely the only way is to develop it or discover it at non league level which we used to be so good at.

But what "quality" does the Academy produce, one player every 5 years, we seem to have no idea how to take a good 18+ yr old from promising youngster to a 1st team regular. Not sure we need to discover talent in non league when there's players like Bonham, Telford and Jakubiak released every season by league clubs. I can't understand why the Academy staff have swelled to over 50, who was behind that DC, what the hell do they do, give 1 to 1 coaching to every Academy player?

I know one Development coach at the club who works long hours and he is a volunteer, he even has to pay for his season ticket

More importantly can we even afford a first team squad? Or a tv That's been bought from Argos on finance - secured against the community trust minibus.

If we are going to have a development squad then we should use it and bring players through and give them a genuine chance with a run in the team, otherwise what is the point.

We cannot afford not too I'm told Rhys Kavanagh has amazing ability expect him to kick on next year. I agree. For me the development squad fulfills two roles, firstly a "bridging" team for young talent and former youth team players and secondly a pool of players to backfill cup games and cover injury and suspensions. It should, at least in theory, allow a smaller but better quality, first team squad.
