Shocking signing and Walsall fans were right on their opinions re this guy. Poor mans Chris Carruthers who wasn’t great either and this bloke is a total waste of budget, I actually think Kelly is better than him. At fault for a goal at Blackpool and played a part in their first goal today. Can’t defend, no pace to beat a man, just lobs balls into the box. Was ever present in a relegated team last season and should have found his way into Div2 with them. Harsh Blackpool goal Ollie Clarke gave the ball away on the edge of our box it should never have got as far as Leahy. Even then he was out jumped by a 6ft monster hardly a huge error. We are so narrow that both full backs are constantly caught 2 v 1 they are being asked to be our width whilst being given absolutely no protection going the other way. I see you forgot to mention his goal saving block after a poor Jaakola punch today ? This seasons scapegoat

He also played the 6ft giant on side at Blackpool.
Don’t try and make out I’m making him a scapegoat either, that was his header that led to today’s goal. And you want a scapegoat, look at the manager and his tactics, look at Upson and Ogogo, look at the captain in both away games has had chances to put us in the lead!!!!!!
Walsall fans gave their opinions, if you think you have seen better than what they said, what have you seen?

Agree roady. However I was told you shouldn't listen to Walsall fans. Blind faith.I'm not Kelly's biggest fan but would also prefer him to Leaky Leahy. No, you weren't told that. I think people were just trying to say that you should at least watch him a few times before you form a judgement rather than slagging off a player you hadn't saw yet based on other's opinions. Now we have all had a chance to see Leahy in action, criticising him on the basis of that is fair game. Agree with your comments on Kelly, can't believe he's not seen even a glimpse of action in this campaign yet. I wasn't slagging him off before I had seen him. I was merely pointing out to a man they didn't rate him. That to me rung alarm bells. Now I've seen him play in 3 games for us and I can see what the Walsall fans were saying. I also seen him shirking challenges for the ball last week. He is a defender who can't defend.

Just worth mentioning for those who are moaning about signing players from relegated teams from our league..
Didn't see too many negative comments when Graham Carey was mentioned regularly on here during the summer..

Walsall fans gave their opinions, if you think you have seen better than what they said, what have you seen? Yep he did but my point is if Clarke clears his lines it doesn't happen, he switched off probably thinking the ball would be cleared. An error yes but not the root cause of the goal. I completely agree with you re the manager he's picked a team with absolutely no width the full backs are left 2 v 1 with no protection how are they meant to defend and be our main attacking wide threat in a 4. If he wants the full backs to bomb on then at least give them the security of a 3rd centre back. I try not to listen to opinions of fans from other clubs, I prefer to make up my own mind. So far I've seen 3 of the 4 games & I don't think Leahy has done too much wrong, we have bigger problems than the left back position. Whether we needed him as well as Kelly is a different debate imo he was signed as GC knew full well he was going to play with a narrow midfield & he was seen as a better attacking threat.

I think a lot of people are being too harsh on him. He’s had zero support from the formation, and him and Hare are clearly more attacking minded full backs. Did make a goal saving challenge today, and can’t be solely to blame for the first goal. Give the bloke a chance.

No, forget that the forum have found their new target, the fact that OC and Bennett had absolute shockers today is irrelevant, the reason we lost is all down to Leahy.

I’m not shocked about how this thread has transpired.
Leahy can’t defend, and majority of Walsall fans dislike him because of his attitude.
That being said, never wish ill on anyone, so hope he discovers how to position himself.

Not a scapegoat, he's just started terribly. Yesterday he was awful other than the goal saving block.
Hare was shocking as well. Constantly caught flat footed while their winger ran beyond him.
Having said that they're being hung out to dry by a shocking formation which leaves nothing on the wings and everyone getting in each other's way in midfield.
We need to either go 5-3-2 or play with wingers to offer support.

Didn't see too many negative comments when Graham Carey was mentioned regularly on here during the summer.. Why, did we sign him? I personally didn’t know anything about Upson, Carey or Leahy before they joined/went to Bulgaria. As I said, I don’t like signing players from teams relegated from our division. I haven’t seen anything yet to show me why we should..

Though you’d think differently, with the hounding on this forum of a young full back, offered zero protection by his senior counterparts.

Plymouth finished in the last relegation place on 50 points and then you can go all the way up to 13th placed Gillingham and they were all covered within 5 points, including us. Are you saying that based on that the relegated teams had massively more inferior players? I think leahy needs more than 3 games before becoming the forum scapegoat. Deserves to be cut some slack in my opinion..

That does not make them bad players as they went on to prove.

It’s not bizarre logic, some were under contract and stayed and had to stay but also went down a league to improve. In this case Leahy could have gone down a league improve. Michael Smith was a player who was better than Div2 hence why he got that move. Leahy never had a club, was looking for one and he only joined us because THD got injured. Leahy started his career at Rugby Town, played at Reilly’s level in the Highland Leagues or whatever awful standard up there and got relegated with Walsall. All the players you mentioned who went to Conference were grounded at league clubs in youth football as well. Poor signing, poor player, no scapegoat, just what I see and his CV shows en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_Leahy

I think it’s more that we can’t identify a decent player to save our life. Eg if our current scouting setup was hunting for a player from the Rovers side relegated to the conference with all those players you have mentioned we would have identified Chris Beardsley as the gem in the pile of turds. From another perspective every close season we have posters who ostensibly “know the league” cooing over players other teams have signed “Gillingham have done good business” etc. Do you think any fans of other teams are looking enviously at us signing the likes of Upson and Leahy and saying “they’ve done good business getting him!”? In the case of Upson we were somewhat warned by him being the player to give our striker his only assist from open play! God reading that sentence back again really puts in stark contrast how bad our recruitment has been for a number of years So it’s probably not that signing relegated players is bad, it’s just when you know it’s Bristol Rovers who are in for him he’s more than likely crap.

As I said a few posts before, I think he had a stinker yesterday and he fills me with no confidence. However the point I was making is that a blanket rule of not signing relegated players because they're bad players just isn't true (whilst it may be in the case of Leahy!).

Ok so clearly you didn’t read or understand my post previously. I said I don’t like signing players who were just relegated from our league. If we are the ones who get relegated it’s a bit different isn’t it 😂 I did not say “blanket rule of not signing relegated players because they're bad players” Let me give you some examples to clear it up as it is a tough one: Leahy & Upson relegated from L1 = me not so happy Little relegated from Championship = no real problem as he’s come from a higher standard. Essentially if we sign players from teams who get relegated from our league (and we don’t go down), what does it tell us about the ambition of the players we’re signing?

If a LB can’t stop a cross, head the ball or can’t tackle then what’s the point? If every defender needs another person in front of them then what’s the point? On that logic the CBs had 3 CMs infront and still conceded 2 goals. Which by the way both cams from our left

Deserves to be cut some slack in my opinion.. Massively, no. But clearly they had inferior players. Look at our end to last season compared to Walsalls & Plymouth’s. We fought, dug in with fight and passion to stay up. Walsall fell apart and Plymouth didn’t do much better. I’m not always talking about skill here, I’m talking about the mentality and fight of a player. There are of course some outliers, as I’ve said in a previous post. Fair enough on giving him more time, but from what I’ve seen he isn’t good enough.
