Im sorry but even making that suggestion about TN proves how sh** we are in that department. That fact we are going into a 3rd season "hoping" that Tom will turn good again one way or another is madness and a joke.Im a fan of GC and respect his work last season but our problems from last year was goals and we have not adressed that from a midfield standpoint. My gut is telling me that its going to be a long, and very, very boring season of football where we will struggle to stay up once again. So is it down to TN being cr@p or lack of service from midfield? Nichols was our service from midfield last season, certainly once Cogs took over. If he hadn’t linked the ball winners with JCH we wouldn’t have stayed up.

I’d play him behind JCH once he’s fit or the new lad until then with sercombe and Clarke or ogogo defensive as midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Sercombe is best when he drifts up from midfield not as number 10.
I think it’s the formation that suits the players we’ve got at our disposal. Overlapping attacking fullbacks with rodman and Bennet out wide because they both like to cut inside and that would suit the overlapping fullbacks , like brown did with monkhouse.

Nichols got 7 assists last season, and we weren’t exactly goal crazy, I think that’s a pretty good return, if you take away he striker tag he would have been classed as having a good season.

On balance I think we have a stronger squad than we finished with last season.
We have added up top (e.g. Smith, Victor) and replaced what we lost in defence with players of equal if not better quality (e g. Leahy, Little, Davies, Hare).
The only area we have not seen much movement has been midfield but we shouldn't forget that we have Rodman who seems back to full strength and it looks as though Bennett has been rehabilitated, based on our preseason he's been a real assett, if we can play to both of their strengths then we should be alright in midfield I think.
Assuming we don't lose any of our attacking players before the end of the window (e.g. JCH, Bennett, Sercs) then I would expect us to do at least as well as we did in the latter half of the season which based on our performances under GC had us 8th - not too shabby in my book! I'm just hoping we play in a more entertaining way.
The only area I'm a bit nervous about is the goal keeping dept. Bonham was massive for us last season. The new keepers are relatively untested and I've not been blown away by either of them yet.
UTG!

The EFL transfer window shuts on the 2nd of September. I'll make my prediction then.

I would never play Nichols again. After 2 seasons he has not lived up to expectations, however we are stuck with him, and he is probably on a high salary which we don't want to pay off AND I don't know if this is true but on 3 year contract. Thanks DC

So now all the major Pre season games are over and i would say most if not all our transfer business has been concluded, what is your gut feeling ( in my case and Nobby's large Gut) on how we are going to do this next season ? Stay Up or Go Down ?? Well my large expanding Gut tells me we are going down with the squad as it is today Unless we get some half decent creative midfield players in we are Doomed to another season of poor football as per last season Sorry to say but that's how i feel at the moment I will support GC and the team at every opportunity i can but sadly i only see poor football at the moment, but hope to be surprised A sh** season beckons but we won't get relegated because of Bolton and Bury, and there must surely be 2 other clubs worse than us ? Also GC will get the team scrapping for everything. Won't be pleasing on the eye but what are the genuine expectations when we clearly have limited funds and have surely put a fair wedge of that towards our right back ?

Anyone have any stats on how many players in League 1 scored more then Tom Nichols last season? To be a striker means that you have to score goals does it? Cause I’m pretty sure if you asked managers, players, fans. All that matters is how many the team score, so if your contributing with an assist, then your helping the team. I said this before he has never not played for the badge, and you want a player that puts it in (regardless of whether they score) every game to never play again. Players like that are hard to come by attitude wise. Maybe if people got behind him as with our whole squad instead of moaning what there not good at then they all might play better and we might all get what we want.

It was so important to have at least one player capable of playing the killer ball to create goals last season after losing brown and more or less Lines. Those two had been our top assists players for the last 4 seasons and without Nichols creating those goals we’d have been f**ked because nobody else ever looked likely to do it.

You can have 40-1 on Tom Nicholls or 50-1 on Payne being divisions top scorer. Those are sh**e odds, sorry Tom.

Will Nightingale scored the same amount of league goals for us last season.
