This report will be short because that was the amount of entertainment I took from this game. I can't think of much positive to write about the Manager, the majority of the players or the tactics (or lack of them) used in this game. Though the team was the same that beat Cheltenham so easily last Tuesday I was not one of those taken in by the ideal that this eleven would be good enough to get a result from todays game. There is little doubt that the gap between most of League 2 and this division is almost as huge as the gap between League 1 and the Championship.
On the evidence of todays game it is going to be a long hard season where under GC we will be lucky to saty up even with 2 spaces pretty well taken! It was clear from the first 15 minutes that we would be constantly torn apart down both sides as Coventry were given the freedom of the park down the sides by Sercombe , Ollie Clarke, Leahy and Hare.None of those seemed to have a clue what they were supposed to be doing and both Ogogo and Bennett did little to help them out by holding onto the ball. Put it this way if all players contracts were up I would get rid of both full backs, the entire midfield and back ups Upson and Nichols. None of them are good enough to have my club anything but a relegation contender.
On to individuals
Gosh people have been very generous on a performance that just wasn't good enough- in truth pathetic.
Jaakkola 7 Apart from one moment of madness I thought he did pretty well.
Hare 3 Nightmare both defensively and offensively. A couple of reasonable crosses prevented a two as was taken to the cleaners all game. Davies 7 Solid but it is very difficult when Coventry are getting past your full backs so often Kilgour7.5 MOM A old head on young shoulders but Tony Craig did not deserve to be left out based on the Wycombe game. Leahy 3 Nightmare both defensively and offensively and directly involved in both goals conceded. One great block prevented a two as he too was taken to the cleaners constantly.
Ogogo 4 Fought hard and battled but that's it. Lacks any real creativity and today a part of the worse midfield unit performance I have seen in many a year. Clarke 3.5 Apart from one brilliant run ending in a shot high over the bar he showed little in the way of awareness of what was happening all game and allowed the left side of Coventrys midfield to totally over run the team. Captain of our team -a disgraceful decision by the Manager as he cant even produce a decent performance himself. Sercombe 4 A mixed game in that at times he looked as if he was starting to get back some form but then for long periods drifting out of the game and not really knowing what he was supposed to be doing. Bennett 4 Too easily knocked off the ball and just not imposing .Was lucky not to be sent off and although his workrate has improved he did little to actually create any positive attacks.
Smith 4 Terrible service to him but lacks the physicality to do the sort of holding up game he need to do for the way we play. Clarke-Harris 4 Way off last seasons form which is not surprising but not helped by so many lack lustre team mates.
Subs: Upson 3.5 Much of a muchness. Was never going to give the team what it needed- a bit of pace ,power and conviction. Nichols 3 Why do we waste a substitutes place. Either play him on the wing or midfield or don't play him at all because a striker he is not. Adeboyejo 4 Tried hard but with such poor service was never going to be able to change the pattern of play.
Crowd 9 An excellent following that just don't deserve to endure 90 minutes of rubbish like that. Ref 5 Well didn't really affect the result but so inconsistent with decisions. Coventry 6 I firmly believe that they aren't that good but were made to look so much better by the way we allowed them the freedom of both sides of the park. If they had been any good they would have given us a tanking.
Gc- Speechless- we have three members of Management on the bench and none of them seem capable of sorting out the mess on the pitch. Was obvious after the first ten minutes that the formation and set up wasn't working and even when the substutions were made far too late they were all like for like. Three blind mice comes to mind!
So we move on to two home games and though it is only early doors the Tranmere game could be one of our most important games .If it is one point out of 12 after Tuesday then we are in great danger!! UTG

We were awful but imo you're markings for the full backs are harsh, I've said this on a number of threads this evening they are being hung out to dry by the way we set up. They get no protection at all from such a narrow midfield. As for Nichols agree he's not a striker but today it looked to me that he came on & played at the tip of the diamond.

I do feel a bit sorry for whoever plays at full back for us,i mean they get zero protection from the pedestrian ultra narrow midfield we employ week in week out. Decent teams will kill us out wide this season just as they did last season.

People pleased with that starting line up obviously didn’t attend tuesdays game, as the attendance suggests. Why is Bennett playing behind the front 2, when we lack width. Stick nicho on a wing as he’s our most creative player which don’t say much.
I’m a totally disillusioned gashead at the moment. We’re in disarray, on and off.
Want to say f**k it, I’ve had enough, but I just can’t give up.

In summary, we would be a good League 2 club.
This should be obvious to everyone! We cannot compete in the top ten of L1 and the Championship is a million miles away.

But it shoundn't be if we were run correctly as a club, even in the Mem. We are losing 3k- 5k off our home gates given our form and the currect style of play...So ...Please just attack and try to win! Maybe we will wake up again for 3 seasons once we have dropped back into Non league.

I will say this TIL I’m blue in the face . With the squad we have our width has to come from our full backs , play with 3 CDs to cover the FBs when they push forward and lose possession, Midfield quality is clearly missing so quicker we bring one the better, we try to stretch opposition defence by putting our strikers out wide , we tried this under DC and it clearly does not work, JCH should be a box to box man getting on the end of crosses not providing them.I feel sorry for the players out there they have told to square pegs in round holes, and the quicker we can bring in a Chris Lines type of player the better, cos without that type of player I can only see it being a long hard season. Everyone will have a different view to mine but this is just my opinion .

It was a poor performance, although far from 'pathetic' . There were -short- periods of the game when we were on top and just didn't do enough.
I don't think the over reactions after the game from some fans were helpful or called for.
I thought Smith did okay by the way and looks a half decent player. Saying he 'lacks physicality' seems a bit odd to me, we have players who certainly don't lack that, but didn't do any better than him. The poor bloke looked bemused as some of our Neanderthals hurled abuse at him after the game.

That is o good question paulpirate and a difficult one on on two counts. 1. We don't know if there is a takeover in which case the new owners may come with an ideal that they want a new Manager no matter what. 2. We have that old thing- the transfer deadline which gets ever closer. After that date whoever is Manager has to work with the tools he has until January. It is IMO difficult to actually come up with a decent side based on what we have at present- The goalkeeper looks ok Whoever is selected at full back needs some support from somebody in front of him. Our two first choice full backs are injury prone and look unlikely to play a great part certainly not before the deadlinr. With a better system and players in front of them Hare and Leahy MIGHT be ok. Any two of Davies, Craig and Kilgour look OK and I suppose we could accommodate all three if we changed to wingbacks but then are the full backs good enough to play that way- not convinced. Wingers- Well we have Rodman and Bennett and that is it. One seems to lack motivation and the other is tricky but unpredictable and slows the game down too much. Midfield- Basically I think we are knackered there as Sercombe has been off form for so long it is difficult to see what can be done with him, Ollie Clarke is just not good enough IMO and his consistency is about 1 good game in 4 but he can score a few but the question I have is would we need his goals if we had a better midfielder who dominates games and sets up chances? Ogogo or his type of player is needed to win the ball but he offers little else and Upson has the ability as a defensive midfielder but lacks any pace whatsoever but might be decent with a good player alongside him or with any pace outside of him. Forwards- We have a rusty Clarke Harris,a young possible talent in Smith and also adeboyejo and a very poor Nichols.
As I see it unless there is a takeover with different ideas or the decision is made to sack GC now and somehow give a new Manager the chance to bring in 3,4 or 5 players then we are stuck until January. If that is the case then GC must be given the chance to bring in a minimum of 3 players probably all in the wide positions and central midfield but quick.
The truth is that we now know that GC despite what he said did not have those close connections to bring quality players in to change the style within his budget and I am not sure he is capable of making the changes necessary now but there seems little chance that the owners will fund a new man any more so there is the risk that we just haven't got the quality to improve the side therefore our only hope would be that a new man could get more out of the players we do have..DC couldn't do it so is there anyone out there who has the connections of players who would want to play for him CHEAPLY!!
I think unfortunately we have to stick with GC and buckle up for a tough ride.

Steve I think you've seriously lost the plot if you're talking about sacking the manager after 3 games, two of them always looking like tough away games against likely Play Off contenders.

I like to think I'm pretty level headed when it comes to assessing performances and knowing where we are at on and off the pitch. I'm not one for getting carried away and making swift, emotional decisions. The performance yesterday was pathetic frankly. It genuinely looked like there were two divisions separating us for the majority of the game. One team was drilled to get the ball down, move off the ball and use utilise the width of the pitch. The other looked like it had no plan whatsoever and totally uncomfortable on the ball throughout. Coventry will be a top half team this season but nothing particularly special which makes that assessment very worrying. It doesn't take a footballing genius to figure that our midfield and the way we are set up are massive problems. JCH and Smith had next to no service so I think it's harsh to be too critical of their performances. Kilgour's composure was the only thing to take from the 90. Big questions will be asked about GC and rightly so. Appears to be tactically rigid and yet again has failed to respond when it was obvious to everyone that the system wasn't working from the offset. To bemoan moments going against us in his interview is just nonsense. Big moments will continue to go against us when we invite teams on and can't retain the ball. The hope is we can offload Bennett before the end of the month, get Rodman fit and in form and acquire a couple of midfielders who can hold their own at this level.
