Big win tonight, not just score wise but will be big for confidence that. Could they kick on now?

Walsall 5-0 up against FGR in the Mickey mouse cup. Sinclair, Clarke and Gaffney not playing. The advantage DC has had tonight is that Adam Smith has made a rare start in goal tonight for FGR!

When all is said and done we had DC as manager for 4 and a half years, in that time he took us down once and led us to 2 of our 6 promotions. Istr that at one point he said he wanted to return us to our historical place in League 1, something he did. DC was our most important manager in our history imo because we were staring at non league oblivion and he led us back at the first attempt. The following is just my opinions: ....In the Grimsby final we did ride our luck in the first 20 minutes but after that we were as good so it was never a lucky win.... And had it not been for the for the Dover foul on Puddy we would have been top....and we were well above them in the league season so we deserved it more than them!....tbh the Grimsby match wasn’t about how we played it was all about the result and we got it. That was all that mattered. But that’s opinion and I know others disagree. Back in the league we had a very good squad that DC had assembled and it lasted us well for two years and he made the most of it. Certain events certainly messed up DCs time with us. Taylor leaving in those circumstances was an event DC never really recovered from and when Bodin went we suddenly had two players who weren’t replaced by equal players. Unfortunately DCs recruitment in league 1 was never good enough to replace what we lost and whether that was DCs fault or the fault of others I don’t know but DC certainly carried the blame for that. The whole of 2018 was a bit of a car crash and DCs focus seemed to change and he seemed to spend more time on political stuff instead of using the newly acquired training badges to improve us and his recruitment last summer was poor. Again don’t know if that was down to him or others but again as manager he carries the can. Last season I would have given him more time, I felt he had earned that but in football results determine everything. And in the end I’m not sure he was too unhappy about leaving, he was able to walk away with his reputation intact in the football world. I loved his time here, the guys a true legend and I think he’s earned respect from all gasheads. But he seems to divide opinion and some seem to love the trouble he’s in and it looks like we’re going for 30 pages! I hope Walsall recover and he can have a good rest of season. UTG!

6-0 win will be disregarded by the Walsall fans as being only because it’s in the Micky mouse trophy and papering over the cracks. Same as if we managed to get a result like that tomorrow against the roundabout crew. I hope for Darrells sake he’s turned the corner.

So the good signings were "lucky strikes" but the poor signings were just poor signings? Well, Taylor was going nowhere on FGR's bench. He started to bang em in after a shaky start, during which many on here, not me, were saying he was crap and should be dropped, and why was he signed, etc etc. He was replaced by Luke James who had come from Posh and had far more league pedigree than Taylor yet he never came good. Luckily he was on loan so didn't cost apart from wages. He was replaced by the ace that is Tom Nicholls, at an estimated £350k and a rumoured £3kpw for 3 years. Enough said. The injury prone Billy was given a chance, he stayed fit and developed into a fine player. He was sold, and unfortunately did his knee after a half season. Seems to only make the bench at PNE now. Replaced by Bennett. £4Kpw is his rumoured salary. So, the players that were good were unknowns and or injury prone. I'd say we got lucky with them. the other 3 were all expected to perform, and didn't, sometimes to spectacular levels. So again i say your saying his good signings were "lucky strikes" and his bad ones were poor signings. All you needed to reply with was "yes thats right" Mansell, lines, leadbitter, bodin, easter, lumley, monkhouse, taylor, sinclair, craig and sweeney from the players i can remember were lucky strikes. I would also add gaffney who was very good in the league 2 promotion season.

Josh Gordon who had performed at L1 level before Clarke's time got a hat trick which is much needed after Clarke has bought in the likes of Gaffney which had ruined Gordon's confidence. It seems Clarke has stumbled upon the style that served you well early in his reign - all out attack. He played players together that he hasn't all season, the ones the fans have been asking for, and dropped the duffers and it worked. We would have beaten most full L2 and some L1 teams playing like that last night. Problem is, as it's all about Clarke and his one match projects so no-one is expecting him to pick the same team on Saturday. If he doesn't it's suicide if he wants the fans back on side.

I suspect the vast majority of Rovers fans have a high regard for DC. He left us in a higher division that the one he started in. Also, imo it's totally unfair to blame him for the relegation to the Conference. That fault lies at others doors.
Sadly, his last few months with us were woeful and that memory has, for some fans, tarnished his legacy.
I hope that last night's result is the start of better things for him at Walsall.

UTG As an impartial viewer I can only look at the facts of the relegation season that suggest otherwise. Correct me if they're wrong though. On 41 points when he took over on 28/3/14. 8 games to play including AFC, Wycombe, Mansfield, Torquay and Bury. Won first game at home to Morecambe. Won 1 more (Wycombe), drew 1 (AFC) and lost 5 games. 7 points from 15 (40 points over a season - form worsened against poor teams) It was 41 points from 38 games. Needed a draw on last day and lost. Apart from Bury and Mansfield (11th and 12th) all games he was in charge for were against teams that struggled if not relegated by the end of the season. Other circumstances don't come into it in my opinion. The form before he took over was better than when he did. And he knew the players, or maybe more importantly they knew him.

As an impartial viewer... Let me stop you there. You didn't view the games, you're not impartial, and you don't know anything about the circumstances in which he took over. Honestly, you're welcome to come here and chat to us about Walsall, especially with the recent Gas connection, and anyone can look up the stats for that season, but if you really think it's a good idea to lecture us on games you didn't see just to serve your new-found dislike of DC then I'd suggest it isn't going to go well. I mean, do you genuinely think this hasn't been discussed here before? Do you think we weren't there? Do you think we didn't live through that bit of club-history-hell? Do you think we don't have strong opinions on exactly what went on, then, based on actually going through it? Do you think we're really waiting for some 'disinterested' party from the midlands to explain what really happened? Is that what you think your best role here might be? Really?

It would be classic Darryl to play a totally different side in your next game. Although I do take issue with the point about player’s confidence. At first it seemed like a reasonable point but you keep referring to it so regularly to the point it sounds like you are looking for any old stick to beat Clarke with. It has some merit but at the same time football is a ruthless business and you can’t be a little snowflake about it. If Clarke had promoted a player from the lower leagues then I could understand it more, but Gaffney did well for us in league 2 so it totally makes sense that he would trust him to do the same again.

Could not agree more. I am all for external opinions as well, but as above, please do not come on to our forum and try to lecture us about games that happened long before you had even heard of Darrell Clarke! For what it is worth (from someone who actually was there) we were doomed that season long long before DC was thrown under the bus. John Ward was taking us down that season with his old fashioned tactics and we could all see it.

No risks there I'm sure even you would have to agree. Lumleys signing was castigated from the off. I was at Walsall in January for his first game. We got spanked 3-1 but it could be seen just how much potential Lumley had. He was left totally exposed by a shaky defence and could not be faulted for any of the goals. If memory serves I believe that was also The Snakes last game for us.

Absolutely correct Fargas and Believe it .with respect you are not impartial Saddlesore - Dc is Walsall manager - at the moment things are not good for you - as someone who actually witnessed the season of our drop to the conference - I can assure you that it was John Ward who took ius down - Darrell took the rap for it - but not by any of the supporters that I stood around that season . Hoping that the 6.0 win last night will kick start the season for Walsall . Utg

Facts confirm he got it wrong certainly in the end and IMO at the start. Brilliant in the middle. but like all managers it is a results game. Like all previous managers of this and every other club if a club doesn't move forward the best players move on, that's life especially in this time of silly money. DC signed two quality players in Taylor and Bodin. Without them his style of win or bust it would not have happened that we got promoted twice IMO. He tried that in the relegation season without that type of player and thus the result relegation. I can assure you it was Darrel Clarke who took us down, John Ward took the wrap for it. Anyone who was at a fans meeting with the Higgs board heard DC say that, but he would wouldn't he? At that meeting he publicly slagged off Ward and Rigg and latterly the board when it all went wrong for him. Mr Nice guy when winning I'm not so sure when losing RIP DC thanks for the memory
