if I get knicked and my solicitor turns up to court and says "to be honest mate I've not even looked at the case" he would expect some complaints. Nichols is paid, better than most other jobs, to be a footballer and if he can't do the basics and doesn't do his job properly he deserves the criticism. Otoh, if you think to yourself, if I put my crappy solicitor in a decent mood and support him he will be able to contribute to my defence and I'll get a suspended sentence. If I call him a dick his effort will be worse and I'll go down for five years. I suppose while you spend your five years in jail you'll be able to tell yourself, 'but I had every right to call him a dick and he deserved it.' But it won't make the time go faster. What if it was the 83rd time you'd instructed that solicitor and he turned up saying the same thing? Would you instruct him again? I must say I disliked the jeering of Tom immensely. I found it heartbreaking when he was visibly upset on leaving the field. He is a human with emotions. This must be a very unhappy time for him.

Cogs threw Nichols under the bus last night, there was no way he should have started given the reports of his performance at Doncaster. The crowd were waiting for his first mistake; and it was a howler. Not really waiting. The first 5 mins Bolton looked a shambles and had he dinked the ball into the empty net instead of it going wide, this would have been his first touch and undoubtedly the crowd would have been onside with him. Alas, Tom gave a typical Tom performance, he put the ball wide, his performance had a bit of huff, some poor touches, no jack in the box attitude and very little all round contribution.
He needs a period out (again). Loan him out and recall Reilly.

Not from me and those around me it wasn’t. There are some dickheads on the East Terrace who abuse TN and can’t wait to latch onto any mistake. Once he inevitably leaves I hope he finds a club with better fans and proves everyone wrong. It puzzles me why someone like Matt Harrold gets hero status but was pretty useless and others get scapegoated. Listening to some of the sh**e being spouted by so called fans last night makes a bad game even less enjoyable and I’m seriously thinking about scaling back my attendance at matches. Perhaps I need to wear ear defenders! Again I don't get this trying to draw parallels between TN and far far more successful players. Matt Harold scored 24 in 76 according to wiki - to compare that to Tom's record is nonsense. To be clear though - I agree, hounding a player at the game while on the pitch is completely wrong. I feel it must also make the other players less inclined to put a shift in. He is their mate and colleague after all.

No I wouldn't, but the analogy I replied to was used to support the idea of abusing him, so I continued that analogy. If there was an analogy to support the idea of dropping him, I don't think I'd bother to dispute that. Obviously dropping him is an entirely reasonable conclusion. The idea that it might be a good idea to abuse him because you have a right to abuse him is more debatable.

Worrying part is he wasn't even our worst player last night! Clarke Kelly and Upson all had howlers. Smith did nothing when he came on either. Terrible day at the office. Only Afeboyejo and Rodman came out of that with any credit for me. Totally agree. Although, Nichols imo constantly performs between 0 - 3 out of 10 on each occasion l see him play, and last night he reached a new level of ineptitude along with those named above.

Neat way of deflecting it all onto the fans.

With 4 goals in 84 appearances and a£365k transfer fee you don't need to know I am talking about. Nichols. You could say that "at the time" he looked a good signing, but given 2+1/2 years to "gel" we now know what type of player we haven't got. He is left over from the period of signing small players ( I include Bennett in this) on long contracts and probably good wages too. With GC tied to a smaller budget he was unable to pay up the contracts of either Nichols and Bennett. So we are "stuck with them both" until the end of the season when we pray that they didn't have 4 year contracts. So up front we have an injured JCH; 2 boys on loan, Nichols, and one on loan at Cheltenham, and lets not forget Moore. I think GC at this moment in time does not have any other options than to play our 2 loans. However here is another idea. Why don't we play a tall bloke who can head the ball, dribble and beat players, and has a shot on him? And he has played up front before , but not for us. It may get us out of this problem. I m talking about Rodman. More nouse than any of the ones we played up front last night, and I would play Smith alongside him. As for Clarke; on the bench at best

This is professional football, being played in front of a paying crowd. Players are paid well beyond the average fans' salaries . This is what you sign up to.
What I find frustrating about Tom, is his lack of tenacity in holding onto the ball. He has to show more aggression and draw fouls. He may not like the role he is being asked to play in GC's set up, but tough titty.
If he could tackle, I'd move him to full back. Ala Ian Alexander(without the false teeth )

Tbf I wouldn't say the majority abuse him, just shout "get him off" when he attempts to make a 5 yard pass and fails or attempts a shot/cross and it goes into the stands which I would say as paying fans we are within our right to voice our opinion. If you're a chef and you undercook someone's chicken you should expect complaints, if you work in a shop and you throw the customers shopping at them you should expect some complaints, if I get knicked and my solicitor turns up to court and says "to be honest mate I've not even looked at the case" he would expect some complaints. Nichols is paid, better than most other jobs, to be a footballer and if he can't do the basics and doesn't do his job properly he deserves the criticism. There's a big difference between criticism and out and out abuse though wouldn't you agree? Some of the nasty personal abuse aimed at him on here is totally unnecessary. You managed to use analogies in your post to make your point without resorting to any personal stuff... Again a very small minority of people on here saying anything personal about him, not that I've seen anyway but I don't always read every post on every thread. Agreed personal attacks are ridiculous but most just say they want him out the club and that he's not good enough and would rather see him gone then get labelled as abusers of poor old Nichols.

Sorry to be pedantic. 3 goals in 84 appearances (1 pen). That's a goal every 28 games. That's a goal every 1,960 minutes (I'm guessing an average time on the pitch of 70 minutes per game) or, 1 goal every 32 hours and 40 minutes he's on the pitch.

Whilst I have my pedant hat on... Tom Nicholls (born 4th March 1992) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who plays for the Gold Coast Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Tom Nichols (born 28 August 1993) is an English professional footballer who plays as a "striker" for Bristol Rovers in League One. Did we buy the wrong one? Nicholls is 6ft 8".
