Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but why isn't Hargreaves mentioned here? I expect he's had enough of being overlooked. Big loss if so.

Bristol Rovers Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Ben Garner as the new First Team Manager. Garner has a strong pedigree in the game, having spent his coaching career at the highest level and signs a two and a half year deal at the Mem. Starting his career with Crystal Palace’s Academy, Garner developed a strong reputation for developing young players and was promoted to the first-team staff under the guidance of Ian Holloway. While working with Holloway, Garner was part of the coaching at Selhurst Park that won promotion to the Premier League in 2013. Garner continued to work for the likes of Neil Warnock, Tony Pulis and Alan Pardew during his time at Crystal Palace, helping maintain the South-London outfit as an established top-flight side, before leaving the club in 2015. It was at West Bromwich Albion where Garner re-joined Tony Pulis later on that year, working alongside the former Rovers player as his Assistant Manager at the Hawthorns and helping the Midlands club to a 10th place finish in the Premier League. Most recently, Garner was Assistant Head Coach for Indian Super League Club, ATK, working alongside Steve Coppell. The 39-year-old will join the club immediately, with his first game in charge of the first-team being our Sky Bet League One fixture on Boxing Day at the Mem against AFC Wimbledon. Speaking about the appointment, CEO Martyn Starnes commented, ‘Ben was the outstanding candidate for the role and someone who really stood out to us during the interview process and we are delighted that he has agreed terms to become the first-team Manager. “It was a meticulous process undertaken in order to appoint a replacement for Graham Coughlan and we are confident that we have found the right Manager to progress the club moving forward. “Ben has a wealth of experience in the game and we look forward to supporting Ben is his role here at the club. “Ben has a great record of working with younger players and we are keen for the close ties between the first-team and Academy to be expanded further, showcasing a pathway for young players. “As part of our discussions with Ben around the role and the shared expectations, we have devised a plan to ensure that the good work achieved during the first half of the season is continued into the New Year, with the collective vision of helping the club push for the highest league finish as possible." Club President, Wael Al-Qadi added, “I’m delighted to welcome Ben to the club and wish him every success in the role. “I’m sure that the fans will get behind Ben and the team as they look to resume the fine form achieved over recent weeks.” Kevin Maher (First Team Coach), Adrian Tucker (Goalkeeper Coach) and Lee Mansell (Development Squad Manager) will all continue to work as part of Ben’s backroom staff. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but why isn't Hargreaves mentioned here? Doesnt mention Widdrington either. Maybe Hargreaves is considered 'senior management'

This could go one of two ways so I'm not sure about this.
However, it's better than Johnson, Cotterill and Holloway so I'm not disappointed.
Be interested to see what his style of play is.
Good luck Ben, hope it works out for us all.

Seems like a decent choice out of the options we were aware of and a quick decision which is good. I’m not punching the air yet but neither a journeyman nor a rock the boat option which were my worries. Was never gonna be a big hitter. Nice to see some continuity too. Very much good, affordable evolution . . . Good luck Ben!

Maybe Hargreaves is considered 'senior management' I understand Widdrington not being mentioned as although he's backroom staff he's not part of the 'coaching staff', I would of classed Hargreaves in this category but I suppose not being directly involved in the first team setup means they felt they didn't need to mention him? Hope that's the case and there's not more to it such as he's left after being overlooked as we can do with as many of the staff that are still with us continuing to stay.

Good luck Ben, hope it works out for us all. Take away his City links and Cotterill would have been the perfect appointment on paper. Lots of experience and proven at this level. Certainly can't say the same for the new man at the helm.

Why? I think it looks good. Seems that he has worked with some amazing experience and hopefully good enough to pick up the best bits. We're talking about someone who's never played the game and has never worked in the lower leagues. Coaches very rarely go on to become good managers/leaders as history has shown time and time again. How many games did José Mourinho play before coming a coach under Bobby Robson ?

Certainly can't say the same for the new man at the helm. Yet Cotterill has only ever done anything of note in the game with a blank cheque & has a history of threatening behaviour with supporters. He would not last 3minutes here on those two points alone. No less because it would divide the fan base more than ever, at a time when it needs to be at its most united. Also, welcome Ben Garner. I did not think he would be the pick but he is now the Rovers gaffer, so has my full support. Hopefully he can put those contacts to great use and acquire some solid signings in January, loan or permanent.

I wish him the best and think this is a decent appointment (but history makes my judgement somewhat irrelevant), but in honesty what are our expectations? As I'm not sure....

Considering his experience within coaching & youth/development set ups this sounds a good appointment. He will hopefully be fully aware that the development set up is playing catch up with other teams and there is a high probability that we may lose some players in the transfer window. I don't think some of the names that have been mentioned would have been happy with the set up. Is it a risk, yes. However, considering the clubs situation this seems a calculated risk and hopefully he may get some youngsters in from elsewhere willing to learn and will get us some performances/points whilst they are here
