I noticed in the last year or so we have at least 8 players out every game . For instance yesterday:
Jaakkola Little Davis Kelly Matthews Ogogo Ginnelly Russe Barrett J.C.H Reilly out. It's almost natural to have out up to 10 players every single game in a small squad.
Is this bad luck or something much deeper ?

Maybe a few more will pretend they are injured or ill so that they dont have to play for BG.

All clubs have injuries. Looking at the list of 11 players injured very few would be in a first choice starting eleven. In addition, very few will be here next season.

Why suggest Matthews, Ogogo, Russes, Barrett & Reilly are all out injured when they are all seemingly fit? They are just either out of favour or suspended in Ogogo's case, Little's been a bit of a sick note from day one, Jaakola & JCH clearly both picked up shoulder injuries, possibly Ginnelly's had enough and returned to Preston but we've no real idea what his injury he's supposed to have suffered. Not sure there's one player you could suggest his clearly trying it on since BG was appointed. |

I think we are just a very poor side at the moment yesterday’s result agains a struggling Southend Side just about summed it up I dread to think what Sunderland will do to us on Tuesday!☹️

I noticed from the conference season until the end of the dc reign we never really had many injuries.
There were some of course like sinclair/leadbitter getting 2 nasty injuries but harrison,taylor,brown,mansell,lines,gaffney,lockyer etc etc and even bodin were mostly fit.
Before dc and especially under mcghee we always seemed to have a long injury list and now this season were back there in injury land.

BG said today it's a fitness problem with Barrett not injury. The young lad is simply too unfit to play. Sad for a young chap particularly a professional sportsman to be in this state.

According to BG today, TDH's knee still causing problems and will be getting some sort of injection today to try to ease his knee. I think Mathews ruptured his ACL and so he's recovering from long term injury and surgery. Little's calf is sore again. |

So nearly 18 months on we still have around 8-10 out per game . Given this seems a historical issue . Is there anything we can add to this or is it bad luck ?.

The amount of injuries is indeed very frustrating, i wonder sometimes if the obsession with 'fashion' rather than 'suitability' leads players to make bad choices re boots and the like, also are todays players to finely tuned that they are more prone to injury? it seems inconceivable now to recall the life style of the' Baron' and co which never seemed to inhibit there ability to perform in a game.
Perhaps we just ask to much of todays players?

Perhaps it's down to recruitment too.
Jaakkola, Nicholson, Rodman have had multiple injury layoffs for us, so could reasonably have presumed they might pick up another this season.
Thomas hadn't played as regularly and had some off field problems, so not overly surprising to get some injury on return.
L clarke, Hughes, pitman all aging players so not too shocking they get the odd little issue. Or worse in clarkes case.
Trevor clarke seemed to be the unlucky one who got injured in game against mansfield. Possibly Grant too.

Older players take longer to recover, players today less willing to play through niggles and are sheltered by a team of medical and fitness coaches, foot-ware contributes to Achilles and other foot injuries.
How teams in the 60s managed with first team squads of 14 or 15 on worn, often dangerous pitches with two-footed tackles coming in regularly, goodness only know. I know the game is faster but it seems the more scientific training has become, the more injuries we see. Few players seem to manage the 45-50 games a season that was the norm of the past.

With regards to older players, Tony Craig managed to be virtually an ever present during his time with us. I see that he clocked up his 650th appearance on Saturday. A journalist once described TC as the most dedicated footballer he'd ever met, maybe that's part of the secret, or maybe they just breed them extra tough in East London?
I do wonder how much is down to the structure of modern day football boots.

I'm convinced that the style and design of boots has contributed greatly to the number of foot/ankle injuries over the years. The old-fashioned boots we used to wear in the 1960s were designed higher up the ankle area thereby giving protection. The material used for the boots was also stronger, again giving further protection. These days we have lighter, more streamlined designs, which look fantastic but are little or no use on a muddy or frozen pitch. That's not to say injuries didn't happen back in the day, of course they did - but they were certainly not as frequent as today, and of course the 'magic sponge' cured all injuries in seconds...
