Other ones that spring to mind:Jo Kuffour, Stuart nicholson (the geordie gashed) and Chris dickson (2 goals on debut away at brentford then did literally nothing else for us), Justin Richards, Paul hardyman

Tin hat firmly on. Vitālijs Astafjevs Signed by Holloway in preparation for the championship but ended up as part of the squad that got us relegated to the fourth tier for the first time in our history (and almost out the league entirely the following season). I completely agree, although part of the problem was that he never got a run of games, so never learnt to deal with the physicality of League One. I was always desperate for him to show his class everytime he came on. He started very few games for the Gas.

I echo the Lee Martin shout.. I think he was finished by the time he came to us. We had a lad who was here on loan from Notts forest a few months before Martin arrived called Craig Armstrong who was top quality. We should've signed him instead. I think wardy was kern but he left, ollie came in and all of a sudden the deal was dead.. Apart from Lee Martin, another sh** full back from around that time was Jason Perry!!!! Christian Edwards was another disappointment

His loan spell was one of the best I'd seen. Was like a totally different player the 2nd time.

Think Jamie White is up there for me. Joe Anyinsah - was more excited about him than Carayol. Who else? Tbf I don't think White was given too much of a chance. For me it has to be Akinde.

Yea, especially as Akinde done some damage at other places (albeit at a lower level). Did Jamie White come into some serious money around the same time as he struggled with his fitness? A kind of quiet, graceful retreat from professional football...?

White had an astounding goalscoring record at lower level but then again so did Bradley Goldberg and he didn't look capable of scoring many for us either.

Exciting signings who did not disappoint might be a shorted list? Start a thread. I genuinely can’t think of one. Well I guess Warboys and Bannister ....but that was a long time ago.

Paul Randall's second spell is the obvious one with fans chipping in to buy him from what I remember... Ollies return as player manager, Jamie cureton as Marcus Stewart replacement and Barry hayles of course.

I remember dc brought white in at the same time as taylor (from Salisbury obviously) and had the better pedigree. It was mystifying why he continually picked taylor ahead of him in that conference season when taylor was awful that season. The other one you've mentioned, akinde, was a non league player who just wasn't cut out for league football a la Nathan blissett. Justin Richards was the same. In fact it was as if we were cursed with bad strikers after the club cleared out cureton, Roberts, Ellington and zamora in one fell swoop. We also had at that time, Lee Matthews, jefferson Louis, guy ipoua, mickey Evans.

Rather than exciting 'signings' that didn't deliver, what about starting a thread on home grown youth products who didn't deliver, despite having a big reputation at youth level? When you think of Gary mabbutt, ollie, stewie, browning, archer, maddison and gurney, the temptation was to think that whoever came off the production line after that, was going to be the next million pound sale for us but for a lot, it just didn't happen.... I'll star us off... Dave gilroy, lamar powell, shaquille hunter, Martin Paul, Simon Bryant and Lewis hogg.

Anyone remember wardy signing an 18 year old striker called Mike Davis from yate Town I think? He made his debut a week later at the last game at Millwall's old ground in our last ever match at championship level in 93 and scored. I remember thinking "here's the next Marcus Stewart" but apart from a handful of sub appearances, I don't think he played again and was let go about 2 years later.

''the club cleared out cureton, Roberts, Ellington and zamora in one fell swoop. We also had at that time, Lee Matthews, jefferson Louis, guy ipoua, mickey Evans.'' Shockingly inaccurate. ''We also had at that time, Lee Matthews, jefferson Louis, guy ipoua, mickey Evans'' Even more shockingly inaccurate. Your fluent verbosity is not matched by a semblance of chronological exactitude.

Guy Ipoua - didn’t appear to understand the offside rule from what I can remember.

Remember mickey Evans?? Scored loads of goals for Plymouth, got capped by the republic of ireland when they were half decent and scored goals for Southampton in the prem. Came to us as a replacement for cureton and Roberts and was a complete dud.. One of our worst strikers... Other bad ones who came with a big reputation and were terrible were matt Gill signed from Norwich City and spent the whole of his gas career on the treatment table, Justin channing from qpr who was a donkey, Marcus andreasson who got home sick after a few weeks, Andy Williams who we chased for a season and a half from Hereford and didn't produce.. Martin Phillips and jamal Easter to a lesser degree. Andy William's mrk2 wasnt that bad. Bulked up after his loan spell and came back as the super sub. That injury time goal at Southampton was worth his fee on it's own!.
