Just read in my paper that there is a suggestion that certain people will recommend that drinking alcohol in the stands and in terraces can be allowed. They claim that the present rule which has been in place since 1985 is outdated. They have seen other sports like cricket and rugby continue to allow drinking. Now, people think it’s time for football to relax the No Drinking rule. And, it should reduce the half-time rush we see at every game.

I know that i can be trusted (honestly guv) to drink sensibly and would be for this. unfortunately i also know there are many that could not be trusted and ruin it for everybody else.

I don't drink so semi-irrelevant for me to add my two cents but personally think the difference between a fair chunk of football fans compared to those in other sports in quite large, is that football still has issues with 'hooliganism' (to an extent), aggressiveness to the away fans and the like and I think adding alcohol in the stands (I realise people will still drink before/after) would, in some views, to add to the 'aggro'.
Personally I think a lot of people wouldn't cause any issues at all but there'll always be that minority that ruin it for the rest.

Having drank in football grounds in England, Wales, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Brazil and Ireland I can't see how this would work.

I can see it ending in disaster in the blackthorn end. Goal goes in, the rush from the back forward, next thing you know pints are flying everywhere and the next thing that goes flying is a few punches.

There is a totally different mentality around cricket. You're there for a whole day, its a slower pace of game, so there's little point in getting absolutely tanked as it would ruin it. Fans from both sides sit together, there is generally a much more chilled and fun atmosphere. You also sit down most of the time, it's no different to sitting in a pub garden.
I'm not a massive cricket fan, but a few of my mates are so I usually tag along, the last time I went to an ODI cricket game you could only buy 4 pints per person. Now if you can drink 2 pints before it goes warm and ruins the other pints then I would be stunned and like I said, because of the slow pace you can enjoy a drink. Also, if you have someone who's had too much, is causing a nuisance, the security waste little time in kicking them out from the ground.
I can't imagine what it would be like on the blackthorn, having total limbs after we score on a cold Tuesday night and then be covered by countless pints of lager or being completely tanked by the opposition and then having a bladdered bunch thinking they can fight the world try and get at the opposition fans.

I'd just like to watch a game live this season, it seems strange timing to talk about drinking being allowed to return.

You can drink before, at Half Time and after the game
Drinking during the game has never been an issue that's ever bothered me.

One the couple of occasions I went to watch rugby at the Mem it was very nice to have a jug of beer to enjoy during the game.. but there was zero risk of any "limbs" occurring then. Just polite applause If I was watching Rovers there would definitely be a risk of spillage if I was drinking a plastic pint and we scored a limb-worthy goal. Maybe you would need a drinkers zone (where you accept the risk of getting splashed a bit).. perhaps Rovers could sell blue&white ponchos to people in that zone to limit the soak value

And I'll be f**ked if I buy a 2 pinter only for you to throw it at me when Westbrooke belts one into the top corner.
(For clarity, I'm not suggesting you're one of those dopes who sing about that or the IRA, but I am suggesting you're capable of throwing a pint at me. )

I remember the Hartlepool beam back game where we needed a win for the play offs in 07. Jugs of beer on the Blackthorn, we got soaked when Rickie nodded in late on!

The thought of coming out the Blackthorn after each game soaked and stinking of beer isn’t very appealing. At least other parts of the ground should be ok. Some of the away games would be the same I imagine, especially the ones with a bigger following. It’s like those who go to England games. The ones that are further away or more expensive to get too are far better, there is no trouble and you don’t get beer thrown over you.

On an occasion like that, in the warm weather i can’t imagine too many people minded. A bit different to getting soaked when we score a last minute equaliser at home to Accrington in the middle of February!

Interesting that some have actually done this recently.
Apart from covert hipflasks (😉), the away match v Southport (Gosling scorcher 1-0 win) in our non league days was one of the most relaxed days. There was no trouble. There was no problem. Apart from someone hilariously exposing themselves!
Also interesting that alot of grounds relaxed smoking restrictions too in that era.

I would suggest that the only way this could work is if it was limited to seating areas only. No way would this be wise in any of our standing terraces where space is limited and you can end up 6 rows down from where you started if a goal goes in. With a seat, a drink can go under your seat and space/celebrations are far less likely to cause drinks to go everywhere.
In terms of the hooliganism point - I can't see this having much of an impact. If you grab a beer at HT anyway, at most you'll likely only squeeze in an extra 1 or 2 during the game anyway unless you want to spend half your time nipping to the bar and the loo!

Regarding you last paragraph I think you could be right. By being allowed to drink during the game may remove the need of some to down as many pints at ten to three and again at half time therefore spreading out the drinking time and maybe not actually drinking anymore than the average fan currently does.
