Schoolboy enclosure for the Preston match, Preston own goal in the first ten minutes, 3-3 draw. Dai Ward scoring in the first 10 seconds of a Gloucestershire Cup Final match. Beating promoted Sheffield Wednesday at home in last game of the season at the end of the 50s. Special bus from Kingswood Park, or the 14 from New Cheltenham, get off at Devon Rd, walking down to Eastville Walking back up to Devon Rd after losing to Middlesbrough in 1961, when the writing was already on the wall for relegation. Beating City 4-0 just before Xmas. Beating Shrewsbury 7-0. Beating Stockport 1-0 just before the end of 1969-70, thinking promotion was nearly secured........it wasn’t! Alex Stepney saving an Alfie Biggs penalty in the last minute against Millwall. The disappointment of Man Utd equalising in the League Cup in the last few minutes. The Evening Post special edition for a big Cup occasion. How was I to know we would win the replay at Old Trafford? Standing by the front of the Tote End as the loudspeaker announced that Williams and Million would not be playing, with a club statement to be made later. This was the prelude to the bribery scandal.. Getting a Clark’s pie and pasty from the kiosk under the small black covered area on the left hand side of the Tote End. Booing the opposition on to the pitch, especially City, none of the teams walking out together in those days. Eastville with 30,000 fans, then 4,000- 5,000 in the last few years. Wolves were the League Champions when I first started watching Rovers in the 50s, in the last season at Eastville they were relegated to Division 4! We managed to escape joining them, just! Still angry we aren’t playing at Eastville , even after all these years. It’s never been quite the same since.

Think I must of been about 5yrs old so 1976 ish for my first games at Eastville . I used to go at the back of the north encloser and sit on the bars to see. My dads friend used to get me in for free into the north stand but then I’d walk down onto the terraces . Didn’t realise at the time but do now , used to be national front skinheads handed out stuff before games . Remember running battles going on in the car parks and my dad trying to shield me . Eastville was a real dump at the end , sad 😔

First game FA Cup v Brentford, 1965. Lost 1-2. The huge metal Sedan Chair-type collecting 'tin' going round the pitch at half-time when we played Clapton orient. They were going under and I think this was a whip round for them. You had to lob your 1d, 3d, 6d and shillings... into the bin. Wouldn't be allowed now. Absolutely freezing cold (and boring) Boxing Day 0-0 draw v Bournemouth, 1966. The great League Cup runs early 70s ... slapping Sandy Allan a 'well done' on the back after the 3-1 win over Norwich City. Paul Randall's goal v Cardiff Jan 1979. He kicked the ball ahead of him, ran half the length of the pitch to latch onto his own pass and beat two defenders to it on the way before slotting home. And didn't we have an athletics 1500m race or something before a game once? And I remember two Metro cars 'racing' around the dog track at some point. Paul Eadie racing out of his goal to virtually the half-way line to 'clear' the ball. He didn't get the ball. I think Ted McDougall did...

Used to live at the top of Lodge Causeway in Fishponds with my Grand Parents so it was a walk to the bottom end of the Causeway and turn left ... Carry on until you saw the Ground. Used to take us about 40 minutes and we loved every step. Six of us, all living in the Causeway and joining up with the Group as we made our way.
Stopping for Fish and Chips, laughing all the way and having the time of our lives.
Memories of Eastville....
Running on the pitch in the snow when Bobby Gould scored THAT goal that never was against Ipswich in the FA Cup. Millwall 3-2 Mickey Barratt Paul Randall v Southampton ..... " The Mud will make it difficult" 2-0... Fighting with Chelsea on the Tote End Meeting a Coach of Aston Villa fans as we were coming under the Underpass late for a night game as one of our guys had got home late from work.... Oscar selling programmes whilst being heralded by the Tote End Rovers 5 Charlton 5 A young Butch Wilkins playing for Chelsea - Think we won that game might have been 3-0 ? Walking on Air all the way home if we had won Hardly a word said if we had lost .... Stopping in Barretts Newsagents for the early Green 'Un
Wonderful days ... bettered only by the Twerton Experience.

The half time scores boards, with letters to denote who was playing. I remember that. Didn't you have to buy a programme to find out which half time scores were being displayed. Yes. I remember the way they used to lean the plates with the scores against the fence and you were able to predict what the HT scores were. Now of course you know everything the moment it happens. I remember I was at Southampton one day watching them put up the HTs. Then you didn’t get all of them just some. They leant the scores against the side and I was waiting for Us v Bradford City. They leant a 5 and a 1 up and I thought blimey I think were winning 5-1 and we were!! It was 7-2 come the end. You don’t get that now, mind you you don’t get Ricketts either! 😉 UTG!

My own memories from the late 1960s and early 1970s.... 2/- (10p) entrance to the Muller Road end, my Dad making sure I was through the Juveniles turnstile safely before going through the adult turnstiles himself. Rosette seller just inside - if Dad was feeling flush he'd buy me a rosette and sometimes pay the extra 1/- (5p) transfer to go into the North Enclosure. Pick up a programme (with a free Football League Review). Players came out for a kickaround 5 or 10 minutes before kick off - none of this warming up for 30-40 minutes then. One substitute. No squad numbers. The "Eastville Roar" and the noise of the Tote. The North Enclosure's chorus of 'Arold,'Arold ...... The crunch of the cinder pitch as you entered the site from the Muller Road entrance. Greyhound kennels. League cup games against Newcastle, Norwich, Birmingham, Aston Villa and Stoke under the lights, crowds over 20,000.... The Watney Cup. The promotion celebration match v. Brighton 1973/74. A 1-1 draw but we were already up. The unique bouquet of the ground - a heady mix of gas, cigarette smoke, stale beer and hot dogs. Oscar (although we always called him Brian at Hillfields) selling programmes. Golden Goal tickets. Getting home in time to read the match report in the Green 'Un.... Wonderful times. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. UTG!

Brilliant memories. Best atmosphere ever those early 70s League Cup matches, esp Stoke and Man U and Villa when it was pouring down and we were really going for it at 0-1 down we got the equaliser but lost the replay. Best goals Harold’s against Halifax T into the Tote End on a very foggy Saturday afternoon 71 or 72 when I was jumping up and down before anyone because I knew it was in being directly in line. And Robin Stubbs v Barnsley to make it 3-2 all before half time, first home match of 69/70 season, he actually dribbled the ball and let go from just outside the area into the Muller Road end. Saddest moment when Dick Shepard got his injury v Tranmere, Eddie Loyden couldn’t help it, just one of those things. Very sad. And around 71 or 72 Barrow were the visitors and they arrived in a green bus which was steaming and didn’t look as if it would get them home. The bus was about 40 years old. Poor Barrow they were bottom, already relegated and their players looked really ****** off. They wore what I thought were orange shirts but actually they were very, very old red shirts which had faded. They’d obviously belonged to another team because their badges had been unstitched leaving a bright red patch. Obviously second handed shirts! I think we only won 2-1. Wonderful memories, if only someone’s then had had the finances to..... how different things might have been. ☹️☹️☹️ UTG!

I was walking down to my local shop and saw the smoke just rising above the houses. Made my way down and stood under the M32 and looked on in horror as the fire took hold. The fire engines soon arrived. A few people soon joined me. It felt as the my world had collapsed around me.

Memories
Attracting ex England internationals to Rovers - Alan Ball and Mick Channon. The constant shout of "tackle" aimed at Neil Slatter. Having to walk down Muller Road from the old bus depot cos I didn't know there was a bus that stopped closer. Beating the sh**. Rovers 3 Leicester 1 in the FA Cup. Singing in the tote end.
When I was too young to go on my own I remember seeing the Bristol Bulldogs speedway just as much as Rovers cos my dad loved his bikes.

I guess all the stadiums Rovers have called home have had links. The old north terrace with a low roof in the days before the "new" north stand was built at east ville. It was just like Twertons covered terrace. The eastville after the north stand was built isn't too different to the east stand and terrace at the Mem. Twerton and the Mem both had "empty" ends of the ground. Eastville and twerton and the Mem have uncovered terrace for away fans.twerton and eastville had the stands with the original changing rooms and tunnel burn down. I guess I'm saying Rovers have not come far stadium wise in the last 80 years.
I remember a circus in the winter on the cinder carpark at Eastville. How after the south stand was gone the atmosphere was never the same again. All the little kids sitting along the wall at the front so they could see. Scarves tied onto wrists or belt. Rosettes and bobble hats. A big crowd and the atmosphere growing as the light faded and the lights coming on. How the club ,crowds and ground were a sorry version of those earlier years during the final Eastville season. When the stadium was finally flattened driving by and realising the dream of an Eastville return was finally dead.

A pint of DD on the Tote during the evening games. Strolling past Her Majesties looking to see if there was a mucky film on. On the Tote during the Arsenal game,no social distancing then!!. On the Tote for Aston Villa separated from the Villa fans by a small gap with police dogs, all sorts of missiles flying. Down at Mueller Road end one misty evening when Robin Stubbs intercepted a back pass and strolled round the keeper to slot home. Watching Smash & Grab slam 7 past Bradford. And that smell particularly on damp November evening's. Alan Warboys hadn't signed for us when we beat Bradford City 7-1, that was in 1971, Warboys didn't sign until 1972. Brian Godfrey hit a rocket though! Funny how our memories play tricks on us! Blimey time to stop trying to remember, amazing how the mind doesn't work as well.

Not the first stadium Clarke Osborne was present at where disaster struck or last!!!
Has been doing it for 40 years since.
Eastville, Reading dogs, Milton Keynes dogs and only last week Poole dogs with Swindon dogs in doubt.
God help Torquay United if they think he is the saviour

When I read Ginger Foakes I immediately thought: Ah, the Irish, they're ginger foakes. I realised just in time that it's better (probably) not to say that on a public forum any more. So, I'm glad I didn't. Phew.

Many happy memories of Eastville. One to remember,I got locked in the ladies when I went to the loo at half time. The toilet handle fell off so I couldn't open the door! As I had left it until the 2nd half was about to start, there was no one else in there. Was too embarrassed to shout out for help! Waited for the 2nd half to start and then was able to stand on the cistern and as there was a gap(I was thinner then!!)between wall and ceiling was just able to squeeze over into the next loo. When I got back to my mates they said you have been a long time. Told them I had been chatting to some else!! Never did tell them the truth!
