The day of the fire it was Sunday, Eastville market day and I had my stall there as usual. The other traders told me the stand was on fire, I told them to water off because there was always lots of banter around. Finally I believed them and went to look, it was heartbreaking to be honest. I chatted to one of the directors he said all we've got left now is a few shirts and footballs. I was so proud that we rose from that to get into what is now the Championship and play at Wembley for the first time, which was always my dream. So proud to be a Gashead.

We always used to get to Eastville just as the turnstiles opened,a few minutes after getting in the ground the routine was always the same,Ray Kendall would welcome everyone to Eastville and then The Liberty Bell would be played over the tannoy.(The Monty Python signature tune as it was more commonly known). It was the very early 70s and I still dont know if it was deliberate sarcasm as I,m not sure if The Python team were in full flow then.

Got a feeling my first ever game was possibly a friendly against West Ham? 1973 perhaps?

In the sixties we only paid 9D to get in!!!! Cinema opp Eastville was where I stood selling 'Golden Goal'tickets. The reserves in those days played in the football combination. Newly signed Scottish International Jimmy Robertson made his Spurs debut at Eastville for the stiffs and scored a cracker. When he signed for Stoke many years later I bumped into him and told him I'd seen his debut in English football at Eastville!!!! He was a bit surprised!!

Mid 70's v York - 0-0 - despite the score loved it - Was taken by a school mate and his dad to see the sh** around the same time - Even as a 8 year old hated the sh** - Must be a Gashead thing. Loved going to the speedway too on a Friday night
