I think we ve had our pants pulled down on the price, however not sure he fitted into Garnerball, be interesting to see if we stay as we are or sign someone, from the official site interview Martin starnes indicates no one coming in.

We are absolutely shocking at negotiating price to sell our players. We literally give them away. Watch Peterborough sell Toney for 5m plus. You literally used literally when you didnt need to use literally 1.25 million is not zero, literally

We probably need to be a bit more clever with options. That way the Stefan Payne’s, the Tom Nichols and the Kyle Bennett’s can be moved on quicker, and the Billy Bodins, Matty Taylor’s and the JCHs can be retained for longer. It’s the only way I see it because we’re not happy with getting done over on the latter examples and we’re not happy we’re stuck with the former but the difference in contract length isn’t always that different. But before a player signs on the dotted line how do the club know if he's the next Bennett or Taylor, it's only after 18 months they can work that out and by then it's usually too late.

That's what I'm getting at, we need to use options. Club option to extend, appearance based options, clauses for pay increases if the player performs well. That way we can get out a little easier if the player turns out to be the next Bennett, and can easily extend without having to spend 11 months negotiating if they're the next JCH.

We went from one extreme to the other. At one stage we were only giving it one year deals. We lost a few player's for peanut's. So then we panicked and gave Nichols and Bennett long term deals.

A lot of work contracts have a probationary period? What is to stop us putting a break clause in contracts; if we see a player as not for us and cannot pass him on, then we can break the contract if the break still applies? We may have to pay more in wages though? If payers / agents do not want the break contract clause, then we can choose not to sign them?
Signing players is very hit and miss, especially players who play further forward. A bit like our shooting? We have to ensure that we have done the right due diligence activities when we spot a player for us? Maybe wait a bit longer, take him on a short term loan first, etc.
PS A season that promised so much is slowly beginning to ....... without a ball having been kicked in anger? Who will take our penalties now? Which player has a FIRM and reliable shot? Leahy / Hare?

That's why I think our pants are snugly around our buttocks. Its so easy in hindsight to say that contract was too short/long and you see it a lot on here - especially the examples you've given. But in the here and now, it's a deal that seems sensible. A player on a 3 year deal brought in on a free transfer leaves for >£1mil with a year left and no positive signs for an extension. If that's having your pants pulled down then you need a new belt. I'll have a peek at the posh forums in 2 years time when they will be having exactly the same debate on JCH's contract regardless of whether he has scored 4 or 40 goals.

I think we've done ok. I'm sad to see him go but you run the risk of getting nothing for a player who is in the final year of his contract and determined not to sign a new one. Lockyer springs to mind.
Good luck to JCH - he did really well for us. The challenge is to find a replacement. Don't forget he came on a free transfer with many posters questioning his scoring record.
