Martyn Starnes has made it quite clear that the guy has to work within the structure of the club and buy into the ethos. Many managers have huge egos and want to be seen to be in control of things that are not going to be available at Rovers and obviously we have an existing framework of people who look after the players and it seems that the club want to safeguard their roles without having a complete upheaval. Tranfers for example are vetted by 2 or 3 people and it is not just down to the manager and so this may be a sticking point. i suspect that this will put a lot of the " names" off before discussions even start . Interesting point about managers and egos . Which Gas manager in the last 30 yrs had the biggest ego and who had the smallest ? Having an ego goes with the job as a football manager doesn’t it ? Buckle for the biggest ? Trollope smallest ?

Brilliant work in compiling that list, goodnightirene, but would a fairer comparison of management ability be shown by percentage of points won from points available? After all, a draw is worth a point. Not quite what you asked for but this is a bit more detail (used weighted averages for the points per match (ppm)). Sorted in order of PPM largest to smallest with BG at the top of the list. Manager | Matches | W | D | L | PPM | Win Rate | Draw Rate | Loss Rate | Ben Garner | 32 | 6 | 8 | 18 | 0.81 | 19% | 25% | 56% | Danny Cowley | 268 | 132 | 67 | 69 | 1.73 | 49% | 25% | 26% | Daniel Stendel | 324 | 166 | 61 | 97 | 1.72 | 51% | 19% | 30% | Ryan Lowe | 141 | 65 | 34 | 42 | 1.63 | 46% | 24% | 30% | Graham Alexander | 363 | 161 | 88 | 114 | 1.57 | 44% | 24% | 31% | Paul Cook | 583 | 253 | 151 | 179 | 1.56 | 43% | 26% | 31% | Michael Flynn | 197 | 86 | 44 | 67 | 1.53 | 44% | 22% | 34% | Paul Tisdale | 584 | 220 | 135 | 229 | 1.42 | 38% | 23% | 39% | Garry Monk | 273 | 105 | 65 | 103 | 1.39 | 38% | 24% | 38% | Gary Bowyer | 352 | 125 | 110 | 117 | 1.38 | 36% | 31% | 33% | Steve Cotterill | 433 | 159 | 117 | 157 | 1.38 | 37% | 27% | 36% | Sol Campbell | 53 | 13 | 15 | 25 | 1.02 | 25% | 28% | 47% |
Tiszer gets us 65 points - not enough. Flyn makes the playoffs with 70 Wolfie we’re going up , 87 points Gurner 37 down

Why would Donny, Lincoln or Fleetwood's managers consider Rovers, that would just be a sideways move, I can't see Coleman would move this far south and Crewe's manager has nothing better on his CV than Tisdale or Flynn. No way will it be someone already employed. Yeah I highly doubt after having to pay off one manager the board now want to pay compensation to hire someone already in a job. Not to mention it'll take much longer to sort out.

I am warming to the idea of Tisdale after being against it earlier in the week. I believe he would want to be in it for the long run like he was at Exeter, (assuming nothing bad happened).
Whilst my preference would be someone like Cook, this maybe only a short term solution. He hasn't hung around too long at any of his previous clubs and he has often jumped ship as soon as he becomes successful. He dropped from league one Chesterfield to league two Portsmouth and after getting them promoted he moved onto Wigan. Even though he stayed with them after promotion, he quit at the end of the following season because they went into administration.

I hadn't thought about it from that angle so much. I mean he was a non starter anyway IMO but even more so when you consider that. Regarding Tisdale, I have been championing him as the man to replace Garner for a good couple of months now. Having said that, one of my concerns is I'm not sure he is the most charismatic/passionate manager with the fans. I'm not saying you need to be but I think it goes a long way, especially with us gasheads! At the end of the day, any manager we go for is going to have their pros and cons, and ultimately be a gamble. Finding one that matches Wael's philosophy and requirements though has to be a good start!

I certainly wouldn't be against Tisdale but I'm not certain he'll want the job. I'm sure it's been said elsewhere that he likes sole control regarding the playing side which with Widdrington in post he won't get here. I guess it's a case of if he wants the job is he willing to compromise if not I think it's clear from Starnes interview that we'll move on

At the end of the day if he gets it, I can have a massive bump and boom!

Looks like Bristol Live have now reported that Tisdale is the Front-Runner for the job...
He if he gets the job I'll back him all the way, but I'm not sure hes the answer we are looking for.
Paul Tisdale is the leading contender to become the next Bristol Rovers manager, Bristol Live understands.
The former Exeter City and MK Dons boss has held initial discussions with the Gas about replacing Ben Garner, who was sacked following Saturday's defeat to Fleetwood Town.
Newport County boss Michael Flynn has been another contender considered by the Rovers hierarchy, but he trails Tisdale in the race to be the next manager of the Gas.

We’ve seen it before managers with good records who should have fitted in didn’t. Megson, Francis, Trolls and DC were responsible for 5 out of 6 promotions yet they were nearly all first time managers. Only Francis had had experience before and that was a relegation with Exeter, so hardly an endorsement. Even Bert Tann who got our very first promotion in the 50s was a first time manager. Yet we are continually saying we need experience when the evidence points to first time managers doing best. No guarantees, just keep your fingers crossed it’s a good fit. UTG!

I just feel that IF and I mean a very big if we signed someone like Cook and then it failed, youd think well we went for the best manager with the best record and it failed, but if you went for Tisdale with a poor league one record albeit 8th with Exeter 9 years ago.. then if he fails with us then you'd naturally think why didnt we just for for someone else who had a better record. Just my opinion of course.

I wouldn't read too much into that. I think Dirt Dogg mentioned he saw Tisdale driving through Almondsbury yesterday morning. The Post have jumped on that. I joke of course...

Funnily that's my opinion too, cook is the best candidate and when he was at Exeter I wanted him here but Tisdale appears quiet and I think we need a cup thrower, my pompey mate says cook fell out with the owners after promotion he went on a bender and was drunk the next day. I want someone with a personality and think Cook would do a marvellous job, Tisdale may but I favour Cook.

Just my opinion of course. Cook won't come here, so can't really compare the two. After finishing 8th and missing out on the play offs by one point, they lost lots of senior player's, who left on free transfers. They had no money to replace them, as they are a fan owned club. It would have been a miracle, if that stayed up the following season. Don't forget they were a mid table national League side, even he took over. They had already spent 3 years on the national League, when he took over. Most manager's would have struggled the year they went down. If you listen to his podcast, he told the board to expect relegation, as they had lost too many player's, before the season even started.

Spoiler alert: Tisdale then Flynn

I too think this bunch of players could do with someone who isn't afraid to shout at them from time to time. I feel Tisdale will be very similar to BG which will annoy fans if he is just stood there unanimated on the touch line when we are getting a pasting. I at least hope he is the sort of manager who has a plan B, plan C etc up his sleeve for when things are not going right on the pitch. That was one of BG's biggest downfalls, keeping the same formation and just making like for like substitutions.

FWIW Tisdale and Widdrington played in the same Southampton squad 96/97 and will know each other very well. Won’t be disappointed if it is Tisdale but my number one choices would be Adkins or Cook. They both have a bit of pedigree at a higher level and I see them as coup for the club.

Good Post GNI! Well done. Really focuses the thought process on what we are getting. To give a true perspective on this I would like to see one more column showing trophies / leagues / Promotions won.
