So far Rochdale have played a combination of 4-4-2 and 4-5-1 for their matches this season. They score plenty of goals and conceded a fair few an all. Their danger man is someone I would have loved here before Hanlan signed (who I now love so all good) Stephen Humphrys who was injured early in their campaign is now back and firing - 7 goals in 12 matches and brings so so much more. Another player to watch out for is Matty Lund who has 10 for the campaign and a real handful. *Please note - I have manually calculated the metrics as opposed to taking them off the stats site as it was counting 'matches' regardless of whether you played 5 mins or 90 mins. This has thrown a few different players into the mix due to smaller amounts of minutes played, but food for thought none the less. Humphrys 4.3, Tavares 3.4, Baah 2.2 and Newby 2.0 take the most Shots per game Gas comparison: Walker 4.0, Ayunga 3.8, Nicholson 3.0 and Oztumer 2.6Key passes per game for them is Morley 1.6, Newby 1.3 and Lund 1.2 Gas comparison: Westbrooke 2.2 & Oztumer 1.86Winning the ball back are Rathbone 3.4, McLaughlin 2.4, Ryan 2.3 and Lund 2.1 Tackles per game Gas comparison: Hargreaves 4.9, Koiki 2.5, Tutonda 2.5, Harries 2.4, Grant 1.9, Kilgour 1.6 and Baldwin 1.6 Clearances per game wise they have Osho 6.0, O'Connell 4.2, McNulty 3.9 and McLaughlin 3.2 Gas comparison: Baldwin 5.6, Harries 5.7, Ehmer 4.5 and Kilgour 3.7
Battling in the air they have Beesley 5.8, Lund 3.5 and McNulty 3.5 Aerials won per matchGas comparison: Ayunga 7.5, Baldwin 3.3 and Kilgour 3.2*Please note - League stats only + Strengths
Shooting from direct free kicks - Very Strong Finishing scoring chances - Very Strong Coming back from losing positions - Very Strong Attacking down the wings - Strong Creating long shot opportunities - Strong Creating chances using through balls - Strong - Weaknesses
Protecting the lead - Weak Aerial duels - Weak Avoiding individual errors - Very Weak Defending counter attacks - Very Weak Defending set pieces - Very Weak Stopping opponents from creating chances - Very Weak Defending against attacks down the wings - Very Weak Defending against long shots - Very Weak Rochdale's Style of Play
Attack through the middle Take long shots Non-aggressive Playing in their own half Consistent first eleven So then, a big big match next up for the mighty Gas on their home turf which has seen a fair share of defeats this season. Dare we say 6 pointer.. We are coming off the back of a fine and very committed performance against Peterborough and they are coming off the back of another high scoring game that ended in defeat. Both teams have a high level of goals against expectations and both can score, although Rochdale edge that now that they are free scoring again. We should be feeling good about the fact that Nicholson and Oztumer returned to the side on Tuesday and both had minutes managed by Tis to hopefully ensure they are fit again against Rochdale. Like it or not, we seem to be returning to the 3-4-1-2 formation again which does see us playing much higher up the pitch but also means that we are liable to be on the edge of seats wondering if the next through ball will result in a goal for the opposition. We remained strong and held out against Peterborough and that will mean a lot to those players and I expect the same formation on Saturday. Hardest part of this game will be who the 2 midfielders are likely to be. Some said that in the relegation battle we can not afford luxury players and require more grit and from the match just gone it was evident that was the case. That being said the Mem playing surface is far superior to that dross at Peterborough, so we may well see the likes of Westbrooke or McCormick returning. Tough call for Tis. Expected line up: . | . | Day | . | . | . | Ehmer | Kilgour | Baldwin | . | Williams | . | . | . | Leahy | . | Ogogo | . | McCormick | . | . | . | Oztumer | . | . | . | Nicholson | . | Hanlan | . |
This 'new' formation is starting to yield benefits and plays to the strengths of certain players and allows us to play up the pitch more which means more quality balls for the like of Hanlan, Ozzy and Nicholson.
You could see at the end of the match Grant was absolutely knackered and that is going to take its toll. Suggest that Ogogo is used to that level of effort and will recover just fine. Grant might need a little rest so could drop to the bench which would allow the energetic McCormick to come in and add his quality to the middle of the park.
With Grant, Westbrooke and Ayunga as bench options you have good cover and game/shape changers. Ayunga has performed very well in the air for us so far and that will be very useful in the season ahead.
Score prediction - a season changing 3-1 to the Gas!
What do you think? What would you do?

I would keep same Team as Tuesday as we played very well and can't believe I'm saying this but id keep Grant in the side. I think he was leggy towards the end because the pitch was awful.
Seemed to do very well next to Ogogo and could be learning alot from him.
I wouldn't bring Westbrooke on either as I think this will be a physical game and he showed when he came on against POSH he hasn't got that in his game to be physical and get stuck in. Bring McCormick on instead

We need to be as tight at the back as we were v Posh but much sharper up front as we know Rochdale score a lot of goals but also concede as many . Want this to be a high scoring win for us as opposed to a high scoring draw. 3-1 Gas

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55816464In their past nine games, the ball has been in the back of the net a whopping 47 times, an average of more than five goals per match. The only downside if you're a Dale fan - they've only won one of these games.

Another tricky game. Their results haven't been too bad, maybe unlucky the other night. So nothing for granted.

If they play mostly through the middle as your analysis suggests, then it has to be Grant and Ogogo as against Posh, who also play through the middle. In fact exactly the same team as Tuesday for me.

What do you think? What would you do? Brilliant post, fantastic stats. A few observations...isn’t this the formation we started the season with? Grant and Westbrooke with Hanlan up top with two supporting 10’s? In terms of stats, Harries, Baldwin and Kilgour would seem to be our natural back three. Balanced, good in the air etc. LWB maybe Koiki / Tutonda? Based on stats and what I’ve seen. Final point is Tis missing a trick with Hargreaves? Last twenty when the opp are tired he could replace Nicholson or Oz

Day
Kilgour. Baldwin. Harries
Little Dave T
Grant. Westbrooke
Nicholson McCormick
Hanlan
Sub changes -
Oztumer as a game changing sub (I would rotate him and Nicholson as we always need one of them)
Ayunga to give Hanlan a rest.
Hargreaves for one of the 10’s if we are winning to close the game out

It was the first league game of the season & Haaaarrrold got our goal. As a then 16 year old having only visited Eastville, Burnden Park, Upton Park, Wembley & some sh**ty little ground in BS3, I was amazed at their ground. I think the crowd was less than 4000, but seem fairly full. A SA band played before the game in the covered end behind the goal, they took up most of the space, and behind the other goal it seemed to be nothing more than a little grassy hill, if I recall right. I remember thinking, how much better our ground was than theirs...........how times have changed.

I'd find it difficult to argue against the same starting 11 as Tuesday night. My preference is for us to play 4 at the back, but given Tuesday was Baldwin's best performance for Rovers, I don't think we could drop him. or Kilgour, or Ehmer. Williams looked to give us a better balance between defence and attack on the right and Leahy does the same, when remembering safety first at the back.
Similarly, I would usually argue for Westbrooke to start, but Ogogo and Grant did well to contain the Posh on Tuesday, which allowed Oz and Nicholson to create chances. Hanlan was a handful again, especially as he got no protection from an erratic referee.
This leaves us options of McCormick, Westbrooke and Ayunga on the bench. McCormick has impressed in our losing teams recently and Ayunga shoed that he wins the ball in the air and has a good first touch - if he can improve his composure with the ball at his feet, I think he can do really well.

Thanks 1883 as ever, great stats. At their place in the draw we coped well with their attacks and their goal came from a big boot up the field and our defence missed it. Humphrys also didn’t play. So although they score goals I’m confident we will win. Play on the front foot and be positive. UTG!

I’d bring in Westbrook for Ogogo. A back five with one holding midfielder is more than enough for a home game. A back five with two holding midfielders would be ridiculous in what for me is a must win game. The only other change I’d be tempted with would be Tutonda for Leahy just to add a bit more pace and attacking intent down one flank.

Always love these threads mate, great stuff.
Part of me would like to see us swap out a defender for a midfielder and go 4231 and look to get on the front foot a bit more...
______Ogogo___Grant McCormick_Oztumer_Nicholson __________Hanlan
...but then with Rochdale being so free-scoring, maybe that’s exactly the type of match they’d want and it would play into their hands too much?
So perhaps it’s best to stick with the 343/5212 from Tuesday, focus on remaining solid and let Hanlan + the two magicians do the damage in attack.

See Matt Lund scored the other night. He did well for us.Recall a fantastic goal from Ellis against them at the Mem.He scored two but one was fantastic. Sure did - in the most torrential rain I can recall at a game! I was about halfway back in the East Stand and still got soaked! Wycombe would no doubt have stopped the game.....

First meeting in 1969 as Rochdale have spent most of their time in the old Third Division North and Fourth Division!
I'd go with the same line up, although I'm not a fan of a back five especially at home.
Maybe bring in McCormick to replace either Grant/Ogogo if they're knackered from Tuesday night (though I'd like to see Ogogo keep his place).
