It’s nothing new for the Gas to serve up a load of tripe and suffer an embarrassing defeat, we’ve seen plenty over the years . Hitchin in the FA cup a 2-1 defeat , Braintree 2-0 and others I’ve tried to expunge from the memory bank.
last nights was particularly painful because it wasn’t just a defeat against a so called minnow , it was a capitulating thrashing .
Was last nights the worse ?

6-1 away at Oxford under trolls was pretty dire too as they were L2 or conference at the time and we were L1.

I didn’t see last night but in my 50 years of watching the worst two were York away, 4-1, McGee’s last game thankfully. And Cambridge away, 6-1 in. Friday night in what is now the Championship. Both gutless performances.
We lost to City 4-1 at home in the mid 70s, that was bad. And Wolves stuffed us at home in the same decade.
We will rise again.

The Wolves match is the only time (ever) I left a match early. My Dad said to me “I’m not watching anymore of this rubbish” and dragged me away. He would have dragged me away before halftime last night.

And 10 years later I witnessed a 1-1 draw against Wolves at Eastville for a third tier match in front of 3378 fans..... Crazy....

I remember that game. Steve Kindon was superb for Wolves, tearing us apart with speed and power. David Williams scored a screamer and the Wolves fans took the p*ss cheering it.

I repeated your dad's words last night when their 5th goal went in.
Wolves really taught us a lesson that day, but you just had to admire their ability and ruthlessness.
The 4-1 defeat to City probably hurt the most. It would have been bad at any time, but it hurt more as it ruined Christmas for most gasheads.

The Cambridge game had mitigating circumstances though - we brought in a young Gareth Taylor at centre half and they had Dion Dublin and John Taylor up front!
I didn't worry so much about those thrashings in what was the equivalent of today's Championship - Wolves were a good side at that level.
Didn't we get hammered at Walsall 6-1 at the end of Trollope's reign? Now those are the sort of games that really hurt!

Correction to that Walsall defeat in 2010-11 it must have been Penney in charge. Trollope's final league match was the 6-2 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday!

5-1 away to Orient on Tuesday night. Mark Wright and Carl Reagan doing f**k all for 90 minutes. Can't remember who the manager was whether it was Trolls or Penneh or any of the subsequent rollercoaster of hoodlums.

I was there too, I remember thinking that we were so far out of our depth, probably for the first time. Although they had a big winger that day that absolutely tore us apart - Steve Kindon ?

Yes that one really did hurt especially as we were 1-0 up at half time. I think that was Dick Sheppards final game for us.

To say last nights defeat is an embarrassment is an insult to Accrington. Quite simply they were better than us in every measurable field. How I wish we had their players, staff, spirit, disciplines and flair. A set up to be proud of.
That wasn’t an embarrassment last night, that was just desserts meted out by a superior team. If we had been beaten by Darlington in the cup earlier this season, that would have been embarrassing.

After the game Penney said he hadn’t seen that coming. I should **** hope not. I believe that was the Campbell-inspired player power that saw to him. We were in a dreadful mess then, please don’t let it happen again.

Mansfield home the season we went down must rank as the ultimate embarrassment given that they had nothing to play for and we only needed to avoid defeat to stay up.

Always thought Kettering.away would never get any lower the day I left that ground. Over the years other results have beaten that scoreline

I was there for that City 1-4 and I think it was Dick Shepard’s comeback match and he made a few mistakes. Great shame for us and him but not on a par with last night. Then, I don’t remember a capitulation like last night, and I don’t remember players not trying like I saw last night. UTG!

Yeah, I remember all that alright. My mate & I were speechless at the end of the first half. BUT, I was at Molyneux when Denis Rofe's team won easily (3-2) midweek. Andy Reece was superb in MF. UTG
