The DM role is a nightmare isn't it. I guess depending on your identity, this can range from a player that is your playmaker or a player that is the shield. For me/us we desperately need to stop teams coming at us and our midfield just struggles right now - not surprised with the amount of formations and players switching in and out etc. I've often thought that Ehmer could do a job there (until last night) He seems relatively comfortable on the ball and can play decent enough short passes. Is good in the air and has a tackle in him...Unfortunately he had such poor game last night that he might have to sit out for a while. I mean look at the amount of us that have voted for him to lose the captaincy! Either way... I think playing with 2x DMs and 2x wingers would balance us right out. Our wingers would stop the opponents LB/RB bombing forward so much and give them something to think about when we are attacking. Only problem I see then is that with wingers/wing backs usually you have a big target man to cross into. We have seen that Hanlan can score a whipped in header and fair play to him... but he isn't a target man mould. This is where I think Ayunga fits in. I know he looks lumbering and has shown to be a bit a slower than you would have liked reaction wise... but leaving him out is not going to improve his game. He bagged 18 goals in the Conference last season and a lot of them were muscling out the defence and hitting the target, something that I feel he can do. I think that given a chance, and proving that he has that to his game will give confidence to the players behind him. In the appalling Accrington match (we didn't create very much for him at all but he still managed 2 shots on target, 2 Aerial battles won (50% success rate) put in a tackle. His passing wasn't great but given the circumstances was anyone 'good'!?! A lot has been said about there not being a tackle in our central midfield options... here are three tables for our squads tackling and passing accuracy (ranked) then a combined score to indicate who has performed best in each of these task... the result... a stats based table for a possible best DM (if passing and tackling are the only requirements - which they are not) Something to talk about though yeah? Please also consider that some players have a small sample size (not played many minutes which can be both and help and hinderance) Tackling: pM = per Match Player | Mins | Matches | Tackles Won (TW) | TWpM | TW% | RankTWpM | Cameron Hargreaves22, Midfielder | 138 | 1.53 | 6 | 3.91 | 75% | 1.00 | Ali Koiki21, Defender | 289 | 3.21 | 8 | 2.49 | 100% | 2.00 | David Tutonda25, M(L) | 741 | 8.23 | 20 | 2.43 | 80% | 3.00 | Cian Harries23, D(C) | 1374 | 15.27 | 37 | 2.42 | 82% | 4.00 | Mark Little32, D(R),M(R) | 180 | 2.00 | 4 | 2.00 | 50% | 5.00 | Josh Grant22, D(C),DMC | 1936 | 21.51 | 40 | 1.86 | 65% | 6.00 | Luke McCormick22, AM(C) | 1326 | 14.73 | 26 | 1.76 | 70% | 7.00 | Ed Upson31, DMC | 862 | 9.58 | 16 | 1.67 | 67% | 8.00 | Jack Baldwin27, D(C),DMC | 1531 | 17.01 | 27 | 1.59 | 82% | 9.00 | Luke Leahy28, D(L),M(L) | 1273 | 14.14 | 22 | 1.56 | 71% | 10.00 | Zain Westbrooke24, AM(C) | 1739 | 19.32 | 30 | 1.55 | 77% | 11.00 | Alfie Kilgour22, D(CR) | 1407 | 15.63 | 23 | 1.47 | 82% | 12.00 | George Williams27, D(CR),M(R) | 293 | 3.26 | 4 | 1.23 | 100% | 13.00 | Max Ehmer29, D(CR) | 2070 | 23.00 | 27 | 1.17 | 77% | 14.00 | Erhun Oztumer29, AM(C) | 671 | 7.46 | 8 | 1.07 | 73% | 15.00 | Josh Hare26, D(R),M(R) | 958 | 10.64 | 11 | 1.03 | 69% | 16.00 | Abu Ogogo31, M(C) | 202 | 2.24 | 2 | 0.89 | 40% | 17.00 | Brandon Hanlan23, FW | 1933 | 21.48 | 19 | 0.88 | 86% | 18.00 | Jonah Ayunga23, Forward | 307 | 3.41 | 3 | 0.88 | 75% | 19.00 | James Daly21, FW | 713 | 7.92 | 5 | 0.63 | 42% | 20.00 | Sam Nicholson26, M(CLR),FW | 1181 | 13.12 | 7 | 0.53 | 54% | 21.00 | Anssi Jaakkola33, GK | 1260 | 14.00 | 1 | 0.07 | 33% | 22.00 | Alex Rodman33, M(R) | 32 | 0.36 | 0 | 0.00 | No tackle attempts | 23.00 | Jayden Mitchell-Lawson21, AM(L) | 272 | 3.02 | 0 | 0.00 | 0% | 24.00 | Joe Day30, GK | 540 | 6.00 | 0 | 0.00 | 0% | 25.00 | Jordi van Stappershoef24, GK | 360 | 4.00 | 0 | 0.00 | No tackle attempts | 26.00 | Josh Barrett22, AM(L) | 117 | 1.30 | 0 | 0.00 | 0% | 27.00 | Zain Walker0, Midfielder | 67 | 0.74 | 0 | 0.00 | No tackle attempts | 28.00 |

Oztumer was a good player a couple of years ago but he has lost his mojo and is now slow and predictable (Hence why we got him & charlton got rid). I would not be building my team around him,not in the middle of a relegation dogfight. We need midfielders who will roll up their sleeves and run through brick walls for the cause, but most importantly can track back and tackle and not stand around and ball watch.Westbrooke needs benching as well.

My thoughts are based on 1) Both Alfie and Emer are daydreamers and immobile and my midfield based on that we dont have a defensive midfielder good enough and fit to play there. We therefore have to try to close down from the front and not give opponents time to find their midfielders and we need to compact the game more in our opponents half. Our problems Tuesday were not caused by the lack of defensive midfielders but by7 the quality of our central defenders and lack of pace at the back. The reason Oz loses the ball is because he is picki9ng the ball up- knowing there are very limited options in front of him and therefore having to9 ho0ld on to9 the ball too long to9 try to9 get an inch perfect pass. At Wimbledon we pressurised their defenders when they had the ball and the same in a way at Petereborough. Having a top class ball winner is ideal but we dont have one therefore there is no point in trying to play with two very inferior defensive op-tions which is what we have been doing and trying to allow our defenders to get away with not marking at all due to their lack of pace. McCormick in the defensive role would add a bit of effort ,workrate and pace in there as would Grant at the back. I think with what we have available a more attacking approach in front of a steady back four wh0o mark is the only way we are going to0 get some results.

So... maybe we might see Cian Harries have a go at DM? View AttachmentThoughts? A massive no from me to Harries in midfield!! Seen absolutely nothing from him to suggest he could do a job there. In fact he's ended up playing CDM several times this season and he's (understandably) looked completely lost there.

Ive seen nothing in Harries to suggest he is anything other than a pretty awful centre half.

Anyone in the holding role needs communication and organisation from the defence behind them. Unfortunately our defence can't even organise themselves at the moment, let alone anyone else.

Tisdale has said its time to go back to basics which to me suggests playing players in their natural position rather than playing a midfielder at centre back. The OP seems to like to hammer Kilgour at every given opportunity but let's not forget hes a young lad in his 2nd full season and 2 games ago he marked JCH out of the game, hes being badly let down by the so called experienced players around him.

I don't like to hammer any player but they are being paid probably pretty good money and I can only say what I see and to me Kilgour and Ehmer were absolutely dreadful against Accrington and lost us the game on their own with terrible mistakes. People have been building up Kilgour and yes he is quite young but so are plenty of other players ie Rochdale who had 18 year olds in their side and I am sure that 22 or 23 was their average age of their team!!

Haydon Roberts on loan from Brighton was immense at their place, 18YO and showed experienced Rovers players how to defend. Great prospect! In the reverse game our ex loanee Osho was one of the best players on the pitch!

I completely agree they were both awful on Tues my point really is that Kilgour had a fantastic breakthrough season last year and is now having a bit of a dip but that doesnt mean he isnt good enough for this level. When things aren't going well you look to the experience in the side to help the young players through, he hasn't had that Ehmer is supposed to be our captain but hasn't shown anything like the leadership you'd associate with the arm band. Personally I'd persevere with him but alongside Baldwin, I'd also not burden him with the captaincy let him concentrate on getting back to the form he showed last year. I'd go with a 4 of Williams Kilgour Baldwin & Leahy with Baldwin as captain.

Please also consider that some players have a small sample size (not played many minutes which can be both and help and hinderance) Tackling: pM = per Match Player | Mins | Matches | Tackles Won (TW) | TWpM | TW% | RankTWpM | Cameron Hargreaves22, Midfielder | 138 | 1.53 | 6 | 3.91 | 75% | 1.00 | Ali Koiki21, Defender | 289 | 3.21 | 8 | 2.49 | 100% | 2.00 | David Tutonda25, M(L) | 741 | 8.23 | 20 | 2.43 | 80% | 3.00 | Cian Harries23, D(C) | 1374 | 15.27 | 37 | 2.42 | 82% | 4.00 | Mark Little32, D(R),M(R) | 180 | 2.00 | 4 | 2.00 | 50% | 5.00 | Josh Grant22, D(C),DMC | 1936 | 21.51 | 40 | 1.86 | 65% | 6.00 | Luke McCormick22, AM(C) | 1326 | 14.73 | 26 | 1.76 | 70% | 7.00 | Ed Upson31, DMC | 862 | 9.58 | 16 | 1.67 | 67% | 8.00 | Jack Baldwin27, D(C),DMC | 1531 | 17.01 | 27 | 1.59 | 82% | 9.00 | Luke Leahy28, D(L),M(L) | 1273 | 14.14 | 22 | 1.56 | 71% | 10.00 | Zain Westbrooke24, AM(C) | 1739 | 19.32 | 30 | 1.55 | 77% | 11.00 | Alfie Kilgour22, D(CR) | 1407 | 15.63 | 23 | 1.47 | 82% | 12.00 | George Williams27, D(CR),M(R) | 293 | 3.26 | 4 | 1.23 | 100% | 13.00 | Max Ehmer29, D(CR) | 2070 | 23.00 | 27 | 1.17 | 77% | 14.00 | Erhun Oztumer29, AM(C) | 671 | 7.46 | 8 | 1.07 | 73% | 15.00 | Josh Hare26, D(R),M(R) | 958 | 10.64 | 11 | 1.03 | 69% | 16.00 | Abu Ogogo31, M(C) | 202 | 2.24 | 2 | 0.89 | 40% | 17.00 | Brandon Hanlan23, FW | 1933 | 21.48 | 19 | 0.88 | 86% | 18.00 | Jonah Ayunga23, Forward | 307 | 3.41 | 3 | 0.88 | 75% | 19.00 | James Daly21, FW | 713 | 7.92 | 5 | 0.63 | 42% | 20.00 | Sam Nicholson26, M(CLR),FW | 1181 | 13.12 | 7 | 0.53 | 54% | 21.00 | Anssi Jaakkola33, GK | 1260 | 14.00 | 1 | 0.07 | 33% | 22.00 | Alex Rodman33, M(R) | 32 | 0.36 | 0 | 0.00 | No tackle attempts | 23.00 | Jayden Mitchell-Lawson21, AM(L) | 272 | 3.02 | 0 | 0.00 | 0% | 24.00 | Joe Day30, GK | 540 | 6.00 | 0 | 0.00 | 0% | 25.00 | Jordi van Stappershoef24, GK | 360 | 4.00 | 0 | 0.00 | No tackle attempts | 26.00 | Josh Barrett22, AM(L) | 117 | 1.30 | 0 | 0.00 | 0% | 27.00 | Zain Walker0, Midfielder | 67 | 0.74 | 0 | 0.00 | No tackle attempts | 28.00 |

What a state we are in when Baldwin is the answer... Baldwin definitely has a mistake in him but I'm not sure we have too many other options !!! That is true! Its a case of picking the best of a bad bunch currently. I just cant believe they couldnt find ANY players to improve this team

Couldn't disagree more with the OP.
Cards on the table time: Otzumer has shown nothing since he arrived to suggest that a side should be built around him. When was his last good season? 2017? Three clubs back in his career. I'd honestly rather give Cam Hargreaves a good run than persevere with Otz. How many goals has Otzumer contributed? One goal against the Dog & Duck FC. How many assists has has made? Zero.
According to his Wiki he hasn't scored in his past 46 league games. That's a shocking statistic for a "number 10."
He's clearly talented but a luxury player given that he goes missing for long periods every game that he plays. I wouldn't keep him past this season and would use him mainly as an impact sub. I'd much rather have Daly, Nicholson and Hanlan up top and a more direct approach adopted rather than trying to play short triangles on boggy League One pitches.
