The team should be built around this guy instead of playing lots of long ball and him having to feed off whatever happens to land his way which isn't very much. Tisdale needs to get a bit of enthusiasm for an attacking game based on passing and move instead of players standing around like statues. For this reason I would play Grant at the back alongside Baldwin who despite the odd "terrible pass" is our best defender and was superb against Peterborough. Give him the captancy. I actually thought Westbrooke had a reasonable first half and was very unlucky not to have two goals so would play him and Oztumer is the middle with McCormick playing as a defensive midfielder because he too has a bit of pace. I would play our best player Nicholson in a completely free role in front of Oz and Westbrooke and up top have Daly and Hanlon. Full backs I would go for Williams and Tutonda playing a back four as a back three has been a failure far too many times this season for Tisdale to continue using it. The goalkeeper I would just edge for Day as I feel he is the better all round keeper whose confidence has been hit by an absolutely pathetic defence. I do believe that we have good players and if we could turn around a couple of wins then confidence would start to build. We were unfortunate that when we hit form for a short time we lost our key players. We are down at the moment but not out. Most goals conceded have been down to Ehmer and Alfie, the former just hasnt settled in with us for some reason and Alfie whilst being "one of our own" is IMO a poor centre half at this standard who lacks concentration and if you havent got the concentration to mark opposing players then you need a bit of pace to rec over and Alfie , the same as Ehmer turns like the Titanic.
To conclude I cannot see us avoiding relegation by going " back to the basics" as that is based on good defending which has eluded us for most of this season. Get the ball to Westbrooke and Ozzy and give them the benefit of three players in front of them and press the opposition to stop them playing.

Oz was practically invisible on Tuesday. We can build a team around him as long as we don't send that team to any away games against decent teams in difficult conditions on a Tuesday night, or something.

This whole 'turning like the titanic' thing is questionable.... The titanic never got the chance to turn so how do you know? Her Turning Circle was determined to be 3,850 feet with a forward motion of 2,100 feet. web.mst.edu/~rogersda/american&military_history/TITANIC%20LECTURE%20NOTES.pdfThat means if he starts turning in the six yard box in front of the South Stand, he should be facing the other direction by the time he gets to Joe's Bakery on Gloucester Road.

Get the ball to Westbrooke and Ozzy and give them the benefit of three players in front of them and press the opposition to stop them playing. Agree with everything except Alfie (and it's not often stevek! ). Ozzy is our most creative player and Westbrooke plays much better when he's in the side. I am all for Tutonda, although, like Leahy, he has a mistake in him, he at least gets in a tackle and doesn't 'show him the inside' like Leahy did for Rochdale's second on Saturday. I'm not sure about Grant as he is not as good as Alfie in the air, but I understand your thinking about putting him in the back four as he's probably quicker than Alfie and is fairly good in the tackle. What has happened to Alfie in the time since GC left I don't know, or is it since Tony Craig left, because it seemed that the two of them had formed a good partnership. As I've said in other threads, it's a shame we haven't got Tom Davies, because a fit TD would be the answer to our defensive woes!

Oztumer does not seem the same player since he went down with covid just wonder if he's still suffering some fatigue?

I always saw Oztumer as the playmaker in the Modrik mould and I'm sure he can fill that role, but only if he has the team around him to allow him to do it. At the moment I don't think those players are here.

I’m not sure what the answer is at the back. I also like Baldwin. He reads the game well but has an error in him, like they all seem to. Very hard for Day coming into this back line where confidence is clearly so lacking. A defence coach with a new set of eyes might be helpful. I had hoped for us to sign a commanding centre back in the transfer window but obviously nothing doing.
I completely agree about building the side around Oztumer. He is the only player capable of adding fluency to our build up play. He also links well with Westbrooke.
Not sure about McCormick as a defensive midfielder. Is that his game? I understand your reasoning though. We do look too pedestrian in that area. Could one of our left backs fulfil that role? Not sure we have anyone who is disciplined enough or tackles well enough.
Whichever way you look at it, it is worrying. We do know that for many years there has been a big gap between the quality of the lesser teams and the top teams in this division and it might just come down to whether we can beat those around us.

I like reading your posts Steve but when we’ve come off the back of a 6 goal beating, your team is way too attacking. When teams are struggling let’s go and get a 0-0 and stop the rot amd hopefully nick one. I fear your team wouldn’t be able to get the ball to Oz.
But I do agree with building it around him. I agree with getting Baldwin back in (if he doesn’t play he may aswell walk).
Day Williams Kilgour Baldwin Dave Grant Cam Nic Oz Mc Ayunga
That’s a quick first draft of what i would. Ayunga should be able to bring more people into play.

Think you need a reality check as to what division we are actually playing in as well as the current position we find ourselves in. Please tell me what despite all the little shuffles and changes of direction he actually contributes. His end product is abysmal and you are basically playing with 10 men when out of possession.

I was thinking earlier in the season if it was worth playing Ozzy deeper so he could actually influence/control the game more. I'd be worried about losing the ball in our own half which would lead to teams running at our back 4 (which I suppose they're doing anyway). For it to work I think we'd need a good defensive midfielder (anchor) in front of the centre backs. I think the plan was for Grant to be this but he hasn't been good enough. I think this is what we're missing, I'm not sure it's Nicholson's game so would be very difficult for him. Other option would be one of the other centre backs or Agogo but it would be such an important position I think we'd struggle with makeshift options.

He’s looked good at times, but has played awful in some of the games. On Tuesday he gave the ball away a lot. Don’t know if it was the weather or what, but he couldn’t do it on a cold night at Accrington.

It might not be fashionable anymore and the world of football seems to be obsessed with number 10s, false 9s and ball playing centre backs, but all successful teams have one thing in common; a player who can get a foot in in the middle of the park and kick people when needed. That central area has all the aggression of Barney the Dinosaur.

He looked lost again Accrington because we can’t get the ball to him. It’s a bit like a house built on sand, with a stunning roof. Yeah the roofs nice but everything below it is f ucked. Without someone behind him getting about and winning the 50/50s Oz will always be wasted.
