Well after that worrying end to the game I wanted to make the point that I couldn't believe how many if not all the 2nd balls we won today!!!! I'm not getting carried away and the final 5 minutes of today's game made sure of that but how refreshing was it to see these players of ours bossing it today? UTG!

It was great to see plus the improved midfield play all round.

That team showed today what they are capable of, which they have done a couple of times this season but now is the time for consistently and Its up to Barton to install that in them. The desire to win the ball today was a contrast to previous managers for some bizarre reason. Shrewsbury were very poor but Rovers played very well.

Our intensity was completely different to anything I’ve seen in the past 18 months. A clear press, which was as a whole squad not just a few players half heartedly closing down. Midfielders constantly running, getting stuck in, the basics that you expect but something we’ve been starved of ever since GC left us. As a result of always being close, always pressing, we won second balls. We roughed them up in the middle and most of our attacks came from us winning the ball back in a press. I can’t help but think that Barton has riled them up a bit and Clint Hill his assistant (a former defender) has taught us how to defend and press effectively- something previous managers have desperately missed. UTG

I’ll just say it with brevity - we were all over them for vast majority of the game

Where has that westbrooke been hiding ? Credit to him he was really good for most part, saw him chasing down with resolve, challenging for the ball and putting some really good balls in.

Where has that westbrooke been hiding ? Perhaps JB's explained to him what's required of a L1 CM, I can't see the useless CM we had before he arrived was the one who played for Coventry last season.

I was also impressed with a lot of our football in that game. We played some wonderful short interchanging passes and both goals were fantastic and we should have had a penalty as well. I also have a feeling having watched it again that i corre4ctly thought that their goal should have been disallowed in the buildup where Williams was pushed before the player who crossed the ball got it. We certainly have not had much luck with referees and decisions. Most teams will say they played poorly rather than accept that their opponents were a better team. I actually think we had better players all over than Shrewsbury and we made them look poor.We should have been two up in the first five minutes and 4-0 at 90 minutes would not have flattered the performance.

He was played further up the field rather than being asked to play a ball winning / box to box midfielder role which he is not. That role is now filled by the very impressive McCormick these days.

That's right. He never looked happy doing that and is much better in a forward role with McCormick supporting. Him and Rodman looked good yesterday.

Rodman/Westbrooke and Leahy/Nicholson were both impressive partnerships.

I don’t think we allowed Shrewsbury to get any foothold in the game, from the first minute to the last. That was down to the organisation of the team. The way we defended as a unit, I’ve not seen since GC. Our shape was superb without the ball. It was obvious to see. More of the same 🤞

More of the same 🤞 Taking nothing away from the Rovers performance as it was all round excellent but that Shrewsbury side could not pass a ball when in acres of space and were one of the worst teams I have seen play. If we play like that for the remainder of the season I think the Past year and a half will almost be forgotten and next season looks promising.

Westbrook was excellent in open play yesterday with his flicks and tricks etc. but I was disappointed with his deliveries from free kicks and corners. I think actually think Rodman or McCormick would do better.
There's no doubt Westbrook needs to be played higher up the pitch, he's not that good at tackling so not an effective defensive midfielder imo.

henry, It wasn't about the passes they didn't play it was all about the passes WE allowed them to play or rather didn't allow them to play. We controlled that game from start to0 finish and there was so much movement and class in our moves but also in the shape. I still believe that when you consider some of the free kicks that referee gave against us how on earth did he allow the blatant push on Williams that set up their goal. That decision could well have cost us that game and set up that tense finish. It should have been a well deserved 3-0 win with the penalty that was not given as well. Perhaps we wioll start getting some refereeing decisions go our way now!

Massive improvement from Westbrook. Not asking for him to be a tiger in midfield but if like yesterday he can put in a challenge it certainly puts him in the starting 11

Where has that westbrooke been hiding ? That backheel for the first goal was absolute filth. There's a great angle of it from pitchside on Rovers Instagram.

If he can up the work rate to go with it then he has one hell of a future in front of him. At this stage it is a big if still though.

Rodman/Westbrooke and Leahy/Nicholson were both impressive partnerships. Yeah. Thought the shape worked really nicely yesterday & caused Shrews a lot of problems - with Nicholson & Westbrooke very advanced in support of Hanlan but tucked in quite narrow, which gave the wingback on either side the room to get on the overlap constantly. Really love goals like our first yesterday where one wingback (Rodman) crosses for the wingback on the other side (Leahy) to finish it off at the back post. A lot of people seem to automatically view 3/5 at the back as a negative setup, but it doesn’t have to be if the players are given the license to get forward & attack.
