How can a player who got turned inside out by everyone he played against be a “commanding centre half”
He was anything but commanding. He was actually better going forward. He was a tidy footballer but not commanding by any stretch of the imagination.
He captained a team who got relegated and for a lot of the season couldn’t get in the team.
I’d say I wish him well but I don’t, he got us relegated and was one of the worst performers and waltzes back to league 1 with a bag of our cash.

He wasn’t very good for us. No loss to our team. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t. This one didn’t. I won’t miss him but I wish him well back at Gills.

No surprise there then. When I saw him play for Gillingham, he had JCH in his pocket and I really rated him, but I don't think I ever saw him play well in a Rovers shirt .

The club can confirm the return of Max Ehmer. Gillingham have re-signed commanding centre-back Max Ehmer on a permanent transfer following his departure from Bristol Rovers. The 29-year-old defender, who spent six years as a player at MEMS Priestfield Stadium, initially on loan in 2014, returns to Kent after one season away. The former Queens Park Rangers man, who is reunited with manager Steve Evans has, to date, made 250 appearances for the Gills and scored 15 goals. At the end of the 2019-20 season the defender decided to take up an option elsewhere, agreeing a deal with fellow League 1 side Bristol Rovers, but now returns home to Priestfield ahead of the 2021/22 campaign with his deal at the Memorial Stadium having been terminated. On claiming Max’s signature, the manager said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have Max Ehmer back at the Football Club. I made it clear to Max when he was leaving to join Bristol Rovers that I thought it was the wrong move at the wrong time. “I can understand because of the short career of footballers that you must take big salary increases if they are offered to you, so I understood that side of it, but I thought there was so much unfinished business for him here working with myself and Paul Raynor. “Max was outstanding for us in our time; there is no doubt that he improved hugely in a short space of time and that improvement would have continued. “My thoughts are not to speak about Max’s time at Bristol Rovers and his disagreements with Joey Barton, because one thing I have is respect for both men. Everyone can read a story and believe one side of it, but there is always two sides. “Max comes back into the Football Club; Kyle Dempsey will remain as skipper but I’m sure Max, with his experience and knowledge of everything around Priestfield, will be an outstanding help to young Kyle, alongside Stuart, who played a massive role last season too. “There is no secret that Jack Tucker’s outstanding performances alongside Max were a credit, but I hope to add another centre-back in the next number of days and create some competition. “Max Ehmer is simply a top-class central defender in League 1. Simple.”Disagreements with Barton? Ehmer was sh** under all managers last season. Clearly came for the money and wasnt prepared to work for it. One of our worse ever signings and a massive disappointment.

Pretty certain he never wanted to leave them in the first place but because they didn’t offer him a contract straight away and he didn’t wanna wait around he signed for us which I can understand from his point of view. Sadly his performances apart from a brief spell when he got moved to right back showed that he didn’t wanna be here. The thing that used to p***** me off with him was that while captain we would be losing the game with about 10-15 minutes to go and he was still strolling around as if were were winning 2-0 with the same amount of time left trying to close the game out!!! I am not one of these fans who believe that the game has to be played at 100mph an hour but what I do expect from a player who was also wearing the armband when you are losing a game is to show some fight and urgency with maybe some geeing up of team mates instead of seeming to go into hiding.

Evans his clearly talking about his own experiences of Ehmer, it's anybody's guess why he was so useless for us, I guess his bank manager his happy with his last two summer's performances.

Disinterested and unprofessional, first nail in the coffin was naming that clown as captain.

Elmer? sounds like a character from Sesame Street And played like he was in a big bird costume all season too. You take a C that’s a ”Cu” and a r,a,p ”rap” you put them all together and that spells “Crap” I said a C that’s a ”Cu” and a r,a,p ”rap” you put them all together and that spells “Crap”

Can't see we have had to pay him anything. Looks to me he had arranged to go back to Gills and asked us to release him. No brainer for the club.

Genuinely thought he might end up back there. Shame you didn't mention it before, you could've done your signature catch phrase!

Good to see we can move on dross even in contract. Risk of having too many Bennett’s avoided 👍 shows what is possible. You have to be ruthless which looks like new team are

Glad he has gone ... Awful waste of everything !
Also shows that JB is not messing about ... Think there will be one or two more having contracts terminated.
Absolute miscarriage of justice that he and Leahy walk straight back to L1 -
There is a certain Lily Allen song that I will happily sing to these people!!

Statement stating disagreements with Barton is like me saying I have stadium news but I'm not telling you. Pointless thing to say Anyway. For all we know it may just be a case of not settling both professionally and personally. Moving and playing in front of empty tents probably wasn't easy. If your heart's not in it you may very well rip up your contract and go 'home' Look at the Luke Thomas thread, it happens. I wish him luck

Absolutely delighted he has gone. He had a poor season here and there was no future for him at this club. When Gillingham refer to him as a " commanding L1 defender" they surely cannot be thinking of Ehmer. In short, one of our worst signings in recent times.
