Joey Barton reaches 'toughest moment' of career as he bemoans Bristol Rovers' lack of creativity Joey Barton admits he's at the "toughest moment" of his managerial career after a lacklustre Bristol Rovers suffered a second successive defeat to begin the new season. After the late heartbreak in the League Two opener at Mansfield Town on Saturday, Barton's Gas were seen off 2-0 by League One Cheltenham Town at the Mem on Tuesday in the first round of the Carabao Cup. Alfie May and Kyle Vassell both scored in the second half to book Cheltenham's place in the next round, but Rovers, meanwhile, were strikingly short of creativity and cohesion with several players in the hands of the medical department. An imperfect start was perhaps inevitable for Rovers after yet another huge summer overhaul, but Barton is concerned by the lack of chances forged by his side over 180 minutes of football so far. Gasheads on the terraces held similar views, with Sion Spence's tame effort in stoppage time, Rovers' only shot on target in the game, being met by ironic cheers and chants from supporters beleaguered by more than 12 months of abject performances from their club. Barton shares their pain, and he is counting down the days until availability in his injury-hit squad improves. A training game was played against Maidenhead United at The Quarters on Tuesday afternoon for players coming back to fitness, including Sam Nicholson, Alex Rodman and Sam Finley – the latter scoring in a 1-1 draw – and that trio could come into contention for Saturday's visit of Stevenage. The likes of Brett Pitman, Aaron Collins and Brandon Hanlan, however, may not return for a few more weeks. "You can’t turn water into wine and players make one hell of a difference," Barton said. "Pitman, Nicholson, Hanlan, Coutts, Finley, Rodman... You’re looking at good players there. I watched them today in the game as I say and just the ability to pass the ball I think that would allow Luke Thomas to get in the game as at this moment in time he’s not getting enough service. "It’s a real frustration because in the last two games and, to be honest, in the whole of pre-season we’ve created very little. "Yes, there is the added jolt of players coming back but we’ve got work to do I think everyone is fully aware of that. We didn’t think we were just going to come down and flick a light switch and be the best team in the division. "We’ve got our fans back and we want to give them a good showing and they're rightly singing about the one shot we’ve had on target and I don’t blame them, but they’ve just got to trust that the best is yet to come from this team. "We’ve got players to come back and we’re really positive about that and we’ve got work to do in the transfer market." Barton has won just three games since taking the Rovers job in February, unable to steer the Gas to safety from relegation, but he remains sure Rovers' fortunes will turn. "I’m absolutely confident that this will get where it needs to get to," he added. "Sitting here today you have to scratch your head and we’ve been crap in the first two games offensively but also you’ve just got to believe in the process and know what’s coming next. "It’s tough at the moment, it’s the toughest moment of my professional (managerial) career but also you’ve just got to batten down the hatches and come back stronger and I’m absolutely sure that the players we have in the building when fully fit will cause lots of teams in our division lots of problems. "We’ll be a complete different entity in three to four months' time, but as always if you don’t win enough games to get there it doesn’t just happen "You can’t just do it by keeping talking week in, week out. At some point we’ve got to go and get the results and the performances. "If I had everyone fit and we were playing like that, I’d be very worried but the fact that we’ve got 11 potential starters not on the park tonight gives us hope. "It is not ideal at this moment in time but did any of us think it was going to be? Did any of us think we’d get relegated in the manner that we did and that we were just going to turnover 66 per cent of our squad and be be Chelsea on day one? "No we didn’t, we knew it was going to be a long hard slog." www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/joey-barton-reaches-toughest-moment-5769709Didn’t he tell us we’d have the best pre season going and be ready to go ok day one? Yep, and did he not sack a few of the backroom staff suggesting training methods were to blame for injuries last year.

Looks like we missed a trick by not going all out for their manager Duff.
Doing an excellent job with limited resources and shows what can be done with the right recruiting and coaching

Cheltenham may have made 7 changes from Saturday but they still kept the spine of the team and had ten of their players who were in their team on Saturday available and a new signing Vassell on the bench. We have by my reckoning Coutts, Jaakkola, Hools, Hughes, Clarke, Harries, Rodman, Finley, Nicholson, Pitman, Collins, Hanlan and 2 more signings coming in, Thats 14 players who did not play last night and doesnt even consider Bubb, Hargreaves, Mehew, Tomlinson, Martinez,Walker and Barrett!! Cheltenham also had pretty well the same squad from last season and are on a high after being promoted as Champions. The big problem at the moment as I see it is that there are quite a few players in our squad who pretty well know from the number of new signings that they have little to no chance of being in the team when the players return. My biggest worry is that even when all the players are fit we still plan to play one up front.

They are league 1 and we are league 2 side. We need to come to terms with that. The players we have signed are likely good enough for league 2, they are likely building a squad capable of staying league 1. Can understand that we all might have wanted to win and put in a good performance, but our focus surely must be on league 2 only. I don’t think we are in the position to turn down any sort of win or extra revenue at the moment, people happy to just write off another game really does puzzle me but each to their own. How much revenue do think we would make? We already have a depleted side due to injury, why risk playing a full strength side to risk more injury.

There are two things decent in our club …. The Community Trust and the Groundstaff …. That’s it! The rest of it is woeful .. Cannot see anything improving for Saturday sadly. Well I think the Lagoon’s pretty good , just a tad slow with the drinks if I’m honest.

I suppose it would depend on how far you progress and what sort of potential away day you get. How much did we make from playing Chelsea

There are two types on here, those that see Joey Basham for the person he is and are ashamed and embarrassed he is the manager of our club and those that are seduced by his celebrity. Putting that aside, his record is very poor and amongst the poorest of any Rovers manager in history. Yes I know there are mitigating circumstances and I believe he was given the benefit of the doubt by most for last season (including me). But he has been in complete control of the club since the final whistle went v Blackpool. This is now his squad and he is responsible for it. From what I see pre season was no better than the pre season he described as negligent. Making excuses for him now is just blind faith. I agree if we had a fully fit squad and able to field our best eleven we may get better results but I doubt with the squad we have we will be able to put out our best eleven more than a dozen times this season and that will not be enough. He will be gone in either November or December anyway when he gets convicted of one or both crimes. When do you think it will be appropriate to start a poll on our next manager? Agree with the second part of your post but re the first part there is more than two types. I’m in the third camp , no idea if he’s guilty of what he’s been charged with ( but wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest) but willing to let the judicial system do it stuff. As for his celebrity, I couldn’t give a flying . Just want a manager that wins games and is successful. Yep - same here. And I think you’ll find this is the default position for the majority of our fans . . .

Every sub we brought on was a young kid with no first team experience at all. There must be a reason that we are in this injury mess

Sean, I'm surprised you're taking such a binary view with regard to Gasheads on here. I for one do not fit into either of your extreme classifications and I suspect many others take a more balanced and middle view of our management situation. Presumably enjoys trying to stoke any division in the fan base? Hey dude, a bit harsh and not my intension. (just expressing opinion which is what a forum is for isn't it?) The division came the day he was appointed and probably won't change until the day he is sacked/leaves/is locked up

Or is that r Joey's latest excuse that he's going to write to Mike Dean about?

If we’re going to use that logic it constitutes an error of judgement if he thought a weakened side would be suffice to get him a result against a strong side from the league above.

He might be thinking league games are more important than a cup competition in which we might not progress far anyway. Just a thought.

The division came the day he was appointed and probably won't change until the day he is sacked/leaves/is locked up You have to expect some reaction when you accuse anyone who doesn’t share your views as “being seduced by Barton’s celebrity”. I don’t see what is to be gained from those sort of comments other than to further antagonise what has already proven a pretty toxic discussion on numerous threads. The team (including JB) were given a positive reception when they came out last night - none of the abuse and booing we were told to expect from the ‘divided fanbase’. I think most people have accepted JB will be our manager for the foreseeable future and will continue to support the team.
