As regards catching Barnet I can remember when the Gas were 10 points clear at the top and didn't even make the play offs. It's football.....anything can happen. Please don't remind me of that, you just made me throw up my Coco Pops! That is the moment we just never recovered from Back on point, LDV's injury was really a body blow HE was making us better, now i feel we will return to a averagely ok team with a strong defense, Catch Barnet? not a hope imo unless the Transfer window brings another LDV. So, expectations: I expect to finish 5th and have to watch some VERY frustrating football along the way. Had you down as a Ready Brek sort of chap.

Wrexham not going up with 98 points must have been a killer! P.S I could imagine our Rich looking at it this way as well....you never see us in the same room together... Sure, I see where you're coming from there Supergas. Have to presume that some points have been taken from these clubs by the league leaders, who in most years won by a big margin, but of course it's possible we'll not need the points haul some winners have amassed in recent years. If Barnet lose their form, then we are right there in the mix at this stage. Can't help thinking that a good haul is needed from the festive period, where we have four very big matches against rivals which could have a big effect on the promotion shake up. Well, in fairness Altrincham, Braintree, Dover, Aldershot, Alfreton, Chester and Welling have all taken points of us , and that's just going though the results from teams who are currently in the bottom half of the table - whether we're targeting first or fifth, the big boys will have to take a place in the queue to deprive us of the three points on any given Saturday from now on... I agree we need a massive set of results over the festive period, if only because it means it will be easier to get quality players loaned/signed come January...there are still large gaping holes in the squad, and it'll be harder to fix them with new players if we can't at least paper over them on the pitch over the next few weeks... I hope and expect ( ) some big crowds for the Gateshead, Torq and Macc games ! I really hope we can generate some real noise as soon as the players walk on the pitch - and it would be great if DC used this to his advantage and sent the players to attack from the first minute with real intensity in their play. Even if we don't score in the first ten it will raise the noise and hopefully intimidate the opposition (who barely play in front of a thousand !). I'm sure Hugo will agree sitting in the South Stand for many games this season has seen Rovers barely get near the opposition box in the first 45 mins and the atmosphere becomes so flat. On to the original thread topic - looking at goals scored and Dc's approach to games I can only expect (not strongly) a play off place. Grab the bull by the horns and get a right winger with quality and we can WIN the league !

I love this thread! We are only 10pts behind. Plenty of games left and plenty of time. I know the players will think its possible. Many of us surely think its possible. Setting expectations high - why not. Are we too small to aim high. We ate bigger than Barnet and need to hunt them down. Enjoy the ride!!!!!

Thanks for bringing this back up, rich. Really interesting looking back. On 9th December I said: To have a decent shot of automatic promotion we will probably need over 90 points, which is 47 points from 21 games:
15 wins, 2 draws, 4 defeats 14 wins, 5 draws, 2 defeats 13 wins, 8 draws, 0 defeats
These would be exceptional results yet would still far from guarantee us top spot. I can't see it, to be honest. We have played 12 games since then, in which our record has been: 9 wins, 3 draws, 0 defeats Incredible stuff! So to achieve my 90 point target we now require 17 points from the last 9 games, which is no gimme, but down to under 2 points a game. This can be achieved in the following ways: 5 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses 4 wins, 5 draws, 0 losses For us to win automatic promotion with 90 points, Barnet will need to achieve no more than 89, which is 19 points from their remaining 10 games. So, if they go unbeaten until the end of the season they may well win the league (5 wins, 5 draws = 20 points) but their margin for error is much smaller than it was. Slip up once or twice in the next few games and they will really feel the pressure of trying to get their dream back on track, which they must have felt was a near certainty a few games ago. It's still in Barnet's hands as I type, so I strongly believe the pressure is more on them than us at the moment. I used the phrase 'no gimme' earlier because that is how I described my primary target of 80 points for the play-offs. Needless to say my glass is fuller now than it was then To get 80 points we now need just 7, which is under a point a game: 2 wins, 1 draw, 6 losses 1 win, 4 draws, 4 losses 0 wins, 7 draws, 2 losses So interestingly, we would almost certainly make the play-off target now even if we replicated last seasons relegation form from the last 9 games (2 wins, 1 draw, 6 losses), but we wouldn't if we repeated our 99/00 meltdown (1 win, 3 draws, 5 losses) so there is no room for even the merest whiff of any hint of complacency. C'mon Gas, one big final push, we can do this!

That puts things into perspective. Just shows what a brilliant turnaround weve had. I don't think anybody could have confidently predicted we'd be where we are at this stage of the season... Especially after the first 3 games.
