This is my big question at the moment if I go through the players that we have at our disposal.
Belshaw- Could play League 2 top level no problem at all but at the moment stil`l no 2 to Annssi if fit.
Jaakkola - Top keeper at this level who was not at his best at the start of the season but missing so much through injury and with International duty still to come I wouldquestion whether it would be wise to reinstate as no 1
Ward- Could become a top keeper but who knows? Will depend if he can progress and retain a number 2 place for long enough to become a number 1. Probably will not be here but has done nothing wrong when called upon but most clubs have a keeper in his 30s. Would be fantastic if he does become good with us.
Houle- Done nothing wrong in the early games and the best of our youngsters. Don't know if he is injured but if he isnt I think he would get in as first choice at a few League 2 clubs and could do a good job if given chance
Grant- Not a midfielder for me but as an out and out right back I see no reason why he couldnt perform at top League 2 level. Generally under rated by people because he isnt spectacular but works hard.
Kilgour-IMO not League 2 standard but that is just my opinion. Some rate him but may gain by moving on because maybe some coaches could iron out the regular errors and alongside a good leader perhaps would prove ok.Sorry if people disagree with my assessment but thats it,
Hughes- Similar in many aspects to Ehmer- very experienced and obviously has been a good player at League 1 and 2 level. Has not reached the heights for us as of yet but hopefully it will come. I would start him and Taylor together and give them 5 games as a partnership and look at the situation after that
Taylor- Catches the eye most games he has played but we really need to see JB decide on his best partner and plat them together for a few games. certainly looks a good prospect and will probably end up playing Championship level
Alderton- Sorry another who is not my cup of tea either at left back or centre back. Gets caught out too often and passing is similar to Alfie-awful.Probably national league standard or low league 2 but perhaps he has just had a bad start and is low on confidence because the team are not doing well.
Harries- A bit of a marmite player. There is something about him that tells me he is a good player but there is always something that worries me when he plays- too casual and always looks lazy. Definitely worth keeping as a squad player.
Brown- have always rated him when I have seen him play for other clubs and would play him as a left back in a back 4 . Thought he did ok on saturday and not much went past him.Definitely a top end League 2 player
Martinez- Not seen enough of him in his correct position but has talent and if fit he may well get a chance in a back four or three. Time will tell but I would say he could well become a good League 1 player.
Coutts- Still have hopes that he will show his true class for us. Unfortunate start with Covid but could yet prove to be a good signing . We really need one of the midfielders at least to be a creative attacking one as all seem to be defensive midfield players
Finley- Pick of the midfielders so far but we have not found any balance in that area. Would not be my choice as captain but worth his place . Needs to be played further forward
Whelan- Has obvious class but time will tell if he can fit into the team. Age doesnt matter if fit and could well prove a good signing and should still be caoablke of top League 2.
Westbrooke- Probably a luxury player that we cannot afford to play. Has had plenty of chances without shining and his corners and free kicks have mainly been disastrous!!
Evans- Signs that he could be a very good player. Is not 100% fit but worth persevering with and could be a top League 2 maybe even League 1 player.
Clarke- Havent seen enough of yet but has the pedigree and could prove to be like a new signing when back.
Spense- Not seen enough to assess. Could prove great later in the season and maybe that is what JB expected.Time will tell.
Rodman- At his best a definite League 1 standard player but injury prone and probably should have been released. Shame but I expect his appearances to be few and far between. Hope for his sake I am wrong because he can be a great asset and if fit would be first choice for me.
Anderson- Has shown signs of being a good player but needs a set position and stick to it. Out and out winger would seem to be his position and on the right. definitely League 2 or 1 standard and would probably get in most League 2 sides with more emphasis on attacking. Does not look to have many goals in him is probably our biggest problem with most of our midfield/wingers.
Nicholson- Star player who will and has been kicked all over the place in this division.Definite League 1 at least in quality and if we can get him fit and keep him fit will help to change the fortunes around.
Thomas- Could be the same as Nicholson but needs a run in the side.
Collins- Not at all sure about him. Wouldn't write him off but would play him up front and tell him to bloody stay up there in the penalty area. We need strikers who want to get in the area and score. Will score very few the way he is being played at the moment.
Saunders- Similar to Collins
Leon clarke- Injured so cant be considered in the near future which is a shame but was always going to be a risky signing.
Pitman- Give him the chances and he will score. Play him up front on his own and he wont. Its not rocket science JB he needs support and must be played in a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 formation.
IMO JB has to sort out a winning formula with these players and fast because the clock is ticking. My overall opinion is that the players are good enough and most individually could play in most League 2 sides and probably a fair few of them could still play at League 1 level. They have not yet done themselves or JB justice and whether they will or not I am not sure but if they don't gel soon then JB will be on his way.
I feel that the team is too set up to protect a dodgy defence and this severely detracts from our chances of attacking. Why JB and so many coaches have not seen that one up front playing the way we are doesnt work is beyond me and greatly worries me because if we do not change our attacking approach then it will be another relegation because at the moment it is the same recipe for disaster as last season with very few goals in the side and defenders who make too many costly errors.
If everybody was 100% fit I would be going for
